There Are Three Recruitment Tiers:

How To Get Your GED Fast! | Teen Mom Graduates

Tier 3 recruits are rarely accepted into the armed services.

  • Tier 3 recruits usually do not have a high school diploma or a GED. The chances for tier 3 recruits to join the military are extremely low. It is recommended that all applicants work to meet the requirements for tier 2.
  • Tier 2 recruits hold a GED and must score well on the ASVAB. Tier 2 recruits can meet requirements to join however, it is still rare for tier 2 recruits to join. For example, only 1% of air force recruits come from tier 2. Scoring 50% or above on the ASVAB will improve those chances immensely.
  • Tier 1 recruits hold a high school diploma or 15 college credits. Tier 1 recruits do not need a GED and only need a 31% or higher on the ASVAB to qualify for the armed services.

If you don’t meet the requirements for tier 1 or tier 2, that doesn’t mean you can’t join the armed services. Earning a GED is the first step, then preparing for the ASVAB or attending a community college to earn enough credits to qualify for a higher tier.

Air Force Education Requirements

It is nearly impossible to get into the Air Force without a high school diploma. The chances are incredibly slim for people who only get a GED. Historically, only 0.5% of all annual Air Force enlistments have only a GED. If a GED holder is trying to enlist, that person must score a 50 or higher on the AFQT. On the upside, college credits may result in a higher enlistment rank!

Can You Join The Military With A Ged

Yes! You can join the military with a GED. The military often requires a high school diploma, but it is still very possible for you to become a member of the armed services after you earn a GED.

No matter which branch you are looking to serve in, you still must meet the age, citizenship, height and weight, and legal requirements in order to join the military.

Each branch of the military has tiers for recruits and classifies all of their recruits into one of three categories. Tier 1 recruits have earned a high school diploma or have completed 15 credits of college. Tier 2 recruits have a GED. Tier 3 recruits have neither a GED or high school diploma.

Asvab Scores And Military Entry Requirements

There are minimum ASVAB scores set for each military branch. The results of your Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Arithmetic Reasoning subtests determine your Armed Forces Qualification Test score. The AFQT score is often called the ASVAB score, and it determines which branch of the military you are eligible to join.

Join The Military As An Enlisted Member

Enlisted members make up most of the military workforce. They receive training in a job specialty and do most of the hands-on work. Usually, youll sign up for four years of active duty and four years inactive. After youve completed your active duty time, you can either extend your contract or re-enlist if you want to continue serving.

Officers make up a much smaller part of the workforce. To join as an officer, you typically must have a four-year college degree and complete an officer program. You compete for promotion to continue your career. Most officers are managers who plan and direct operations. Others are professionals like doctors and lawyers. Officers get paid more than enlisted members and enjoy certain other benefits.

You dont have to join as an officer to become one though. You can join as an enlisted member and attend officer training later on.

Is The Afqt The Same As The Asvab

What can I do with my GED?

The AFQT is part of the overall ASVAB test, and contains the four sections mentioned above. The ASVAB, on the other hand, is the name given to the full test that contains the AFQT sections as well as six more tests in more specific areas such as electronics and mechanics.

The AFQT determines if youre generally qualified to join the military, whilst the remaining parts of the ASVAB can help determine eligibility for military occupational specialties .

In order to join the United States Armed Forces, recruits need to meet basic standards for education, age, fitness, and more. While eligibility requirements can vary slightly based on the branch of the military youre interested in joining, one thing that is similar across most areas is the need for a legitimate high school diploma. Depending on other exam scores and eligibility, students can use an online high school diploma like Penn Fosters to enlist in the military as a Tier 1 recruit.

What Is The Asvab Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or the ASVAB test, serves as the military entrance exam and an aptitude test for military careers. It is a proctored exam that includes ten short tests for you to complete in three hours or less. Each test includes multiple-choice questions related to:

  • General science
  • Surveillance and communications
  • Skilled technical

It’s important to remember some branches require higher scores in general, and most branches have higher score requirements for people with GEDs than they do for those with high school diplomas. In addition to a higher ASVAB composite score, some branches also require higher line scores. Most branches consider the AFQT score the most important line score, especially for recruits with a GED. As some people struggle to take tests, some branches may allow recruits with low scores to get a waiver to take the place of their ASVAB score, which is something you ask your recruiter about.

Army Offers Ged Help In Exchange For Service

A pilot program at the Army’s Fort Jackson near Columbia, S.C., is offering high school dropouts a chance to earn their GEDs for free in exchange for their service. The Army hopes this program will keep its enlistment numbers steady as the wars overseas continue.

After dropping out of high school, William Kamicka, now 28, wanted to join the military, but his family talked him out of it. So the Columbiaville, Mich., native got a job. He eventually found work at a gift shop where he met his wife. They got married, and now they have four kids. Kamicka says having a family made it hard for him to get his GED.

“I’d eat up any overtime I could get my hands on, just to get that extra dollar, so that interfered with my GED classes,” Kamicka says. “I never really got to finish.”

Then a few months ago, as Michigan’s economy tanked, Kamicka and his wife lost their jobs. He went on unemployment and searched for a new job, but without a diploma, he couldn’t even find work at a fast-food restaurant. So he tried to join the military but officials there, too, were looking for a high school diploma.

“The Navy, Air Force and Marines wouldn’t accept me,” Kamicka recalls. “The Army had said, ‘We’ll pay for your GED you get it and then you can come join.'”

Explanation Of Asvab Scores & Abbreviations

Life sometimes gets in the way of completing a high school diploma. Rather than taking the time to complete a high school diploma, some opt to pass the General Educational Development test and obtain an equivalent diploma. Although a GED diploma is considered equivalent to a high school diploma by most employers and colleges, the U.S. military has a difference view. According to GED Testing Service, the Department of Defense uses a three-tier system to select applicants with the greatest likelihood of completing their initial military service obligation. Those with a high school diploma are considered the most desirable and are Tier 1 candidates. Those with a GED diploma are Tier 2 candidates. In all branches of the military, those who have completed 15 college credits in addition to a GED diploma are also considered Tier 1 candidates.

While some recruits have been accepted to the Armed Forces with GEDs or other high school equivalency exams, the process can be longer and only a small number are accepted each year. These generally fall under Tier II enlistments.

Again, Tier I enlistments, which make up 90% of those who join the armed services each year, are those whove graduated from a high school program or have at least 15 college credits under their belt. Most regionally accredited public high schools are considered Tier I.
