What Does An Air Force Physical Therapist Do

A physical therapist in the air force usually works within hospitals or other medical facilities. How Much Does A Physical Therapist Make Per Hour

Short answer: around $35 per hour on average, but $60 per hour or more for contracted PTs.

As a physical therapist, you will be paid on either an hourly or salary basis. Hourly rates among salaried PTs fluctuate based on the total number of hours worked.

Although a job with a set salary might sound appealing, it could entail working more than a standard 40-hour week due to additional paperwork.

Suppose you work at a clinic for an annual salary, but youre required to complete your documentation on your own time, either at home or by staying after hours. Those extra 10 hours per week spent on documentation can significantly affect your hourly compensation.

Never settle for a salary without knowing how many hours youll average on clinic and documentation time. Although some clinics still pay therapists hourly for documentation, this is often not the case.

How Much Is Manual Therapy Vs Exercise Vs Education

Military physical therapy demands simple, effective, and efficient medical care at a minimum. My evaluation emphasizes ruling out sinister stuff, re-assuring and educating, and promoting self-care and independence. A visit with me usually consists of 60% education/advice/re-assurance/strategic health planning, 30% exercise demonstration/prescription, and 10% manual therapy.

Is The Military Paying Your Tuition Worth It

maxblink said:Second, all through PT school you’ll have to do PT tests, attend military events, be on perfect behavior, etc. It isn’t smooth sailing through the programs, you will be expected to be involved and do stuff. You know the ROTC guys in undergrad who are always busy and running around? That’s what it’ll be like, but with 20x more homework.

This is my favorite, however, it doesn’t explain why I have a successful marriage and three kids at home. It also tries to refute the fact that my wife in fact has a career, and is currently about to finish up a double Master’s Degree in Behavioral Health Counseling. I’d say probably 80% or more of officers in the Army are married, and have children, and I’d go further in estimating the divorce rate for military officers is lower than the national average. The issues brought up in this point are negated by a mature decision on who you marry.Your mission in the Army-Baylor program is to graduate and become a licensed therapist in the military. You will have military functions to attend, but those are relatively uncommon. Oh, and heaven forbid you be expected to maintain some sort of physical conditioning while in school. You will not be expected to be an elite athlete. You are expected to maintain some semblance of physical fitness, which I will add, if you are considering a career in physical therapy, you should already be doing that on your own.Good for you.

Handling The Cost Of Physical Therapy School

There is no way around it tuition is expensive.

Doctor of physical therapy programs in particular, because of their length and level , require a huge financial commitment at least $100,000 in student loans for most graduates, when tuition and living expenses are factored in.

It would be one thing if a new physical therapist could easily expect to earn enough money to pay student loans and other bills, but increasingly, PTs are finding it difficult to pull that off. Reimbursements by insurance for physical therapy are decreasing, which means salaries in physical therapy arent rising very much, if at all.

But its not all bad news. There are some things you can do to mitigate the financial drawbacks, and pursue the career you love.

Get a financial education too

One of the best things you can do, is educate yourself about your finances. There is a dearth of financial education provided to teens and young adults, and as a result, most of us leave high school, college and even graduate school with no idea how to do our taxes, invest money or create passive income, let alone balance a checkbook!

But, if we invest in a financial education for ourselves, we can not only survive, but thrive, financially, even in a time when reimbursements for physical therapy are declining.

Why Did You Pick Your Particular School

There were several reasons which lead me to my decision of attending Arcadia University for DPT school. Firstly, I knew I wanted to go to a school that had a strong faculty grounded in both the clinical and research realms of both neurological and orthopedic fields. Arcadia University had this, and I was very intrigued by the research that was being done by professors like Dr. Rebecca Craik and Dr. Philip McClure .

Secondly, Arcadia University had a unique curriculum format which is hard to fully represent, but the basic premise is that each semester was broken into five 3-week units. Each unit consisted of all normally included classes geared around one specific case study with a final exam at the end of each 3-week unit.

Physical Therapist Pay: What Ive Been Offered

Personally, Ive been offered a range of salaries from $64,000 to $84,000 as a relatively new grad . Ive also worked PRN and made significantly more per hour in a home health setting.

The wide range in PT salaries boils down to three main variables: years of experience, location of practice, and willingness to specialize and travel.

    So What Are The Negatives

Military bases usually arent located in the most exciting areas. I have a little over an hour ride to work because I choose to live in Raleigh where there is a lot more going on. This is really the only thing I could complain about, but I just utilize the driving time to listen to audiobooks and podcasts.

Because of location, it is sometimes difficult to fill open physical therapy spots. This means, these jobs are not as scarce as you think. I actually got my job by applying to a post on Indeed. Still to this day, I see other contracting companies with ads up for similar positions as well. If you are willing to relocate, I think the job opportunities are out there if you just look.

*I do want to mention that in addition to embedded physical therapists, there are also outpatient and inpatient physical therapists at the MTFs and hospitals on base, as well as in VA hospitals and medical clinics. However, I have never held one of these positions and therefore cannot speak to them.*
