Us Army Reinstates High School Diploma And Ged Requirements For Enlistment

The U.S. Army has reversed a policy it announced in June that allowed the high school diploma or GED requirement to be waived for some applicants hoping to enlist.

Command officials told recruiters last week that those who had already been approved for the service without a diploma or GED certificate could still serve in the Army, along with those projected to enlist that day, but no one else, according to documents obtained by the Army Times.

The 111 Non-Grad enlistment program has been suspended. Those … who have enlisted are authorized to ship , the email said. Any other projected for enlistment today are authorized to enlist, but all other projection MUST be cancelled immediately. No exceptions are authorized.

Army spokesman Matt Leonard confirmed the suspension on Tuesday but offered no additional details, according toDefense One.

The new policy initially allowed people over the age of 18 who do not have a diploma or a GED certificate to still enlist in the Army if they met all the other enlistment criteria and scored at least a 50 on the military entrance exam. Those who do have the required documents only needed a 31 on the exam. But the waiver only applied to recruits who could not complete high school due to caring for a loved one who had an illness or who were working full-time to support their family.

Where Can I Take The Asvab

GED Math – How to Get the Right Answers on the 2022 Test (1)

ASVAB Testing is usually conducted at MEPS that includes both military and civilian staff.

All across the U.S, you can find 65 MEPS, and in case you dont live close to one of these locations, the ASVAB test may also be taken at a satellite location, a so-called MET site . These MET sites are usually located in a National Guard Armory at Federal government buildings or at a National Reserve Center.

At MEPS, you are required to take the ASVAB on a computer , while at most MET facilities, you must take the test in a paper-and-pencil format. The computer-based ASVAB, the CAT-ASVAB, is an adaptive examination, meaning the test will adapt to the test takers ability and knowledge level.

Therefore, this way of testing may be shorter than the paper and pencil way of testing. View here some army career fields.

    What Is The Asvab Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, or the ASVAB test, serves as the military entrance exam and an aptitude test for military careers. It is a proctored exam that includes ten short tests for you to complete in three hours or less. Each test includes multiple-choice questions related to:

    • General science

    • Surveillance and communications

    • Skilled technical

It’s important to remember some branches require higher scores in general, and most branches have higher score requirements for people with GEDs than they do for those with high school diplomas. In addition to a higher ASVAB composite score, some branches also require higher line scores. Most branches consider the AFQT score the most important line score, especially for recruits with a GED. As some people struggle to take tests, some branches may allow recruits with low scores to get a waiver to take the place of their ASVAB score, which is something you ask your recruiter about.

    What Is An Aptitude Test

    Corporal George Smith

ASVAB test is an aptitude test. Aptitude tests, in general, will reveal what kind of academic or professional assignments an individual is likely to perform best without measuring knowledge or skills that were accumulated in previous professional or academic environments.

In general, you may say that aptitude tests are capable of indicating a students weaknesses and strengths and that they are excellent indicators of a persons future academic or professional achievement.

Students who want to continue with their academic education are not required to prepare or study for these tests because of the nature of aptitude tests.

They dont measure knowledge, and there is no study material that may get them all set for these tests. There are, however, several ways in which applicants may get optimally prepared for the tests.

Experts Split On Programs Merits Army Quiet

Its not clear why the Army suspended the program less than a week after it went public, and the service has not provided an official statement on why it pulled the plug.

An unnamed official told Military.com that the rollback was influenced by the backlash the policy received in some circles accusing the service of lowering its standards to fill the ranks.

Another Army official acknowledged the backlash in an interview with Army Times last week, but argued that the policy rollback was more to do with ensuring that we set the recruits…up for success rather than perception of a lowered standard to join.

Whatever the reason for the change, experts on recruiting quality and personnel policy split on whether the Army made the right call.

Kate Kuzminski, who heads the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security think tank, said the Army made a prudent call in reversing the education waivers.

Kuzminskis emailed statement cited studies that show the percentage of high-quality recruits in a service at any given points correlates highly with tactical effectiveness .

New infantry soldiers-in-training conduct basic rifle marksmanship training at Fort Benning, Georgia, March 23, 2017.

According to DoD data, tough recruiting years such as fiscal 2008 saw the service bring in as much as a quarter of its new enlistees without diplomas. And 367 of them didnt have a GED that year, either.

The devils in the details, declared Asch.

What Is The Tier Classification System

The Department of Defense uses a three-tiered system to classify potential recruits. The criteria for each tier relates to educational requirements. The tiers are:

    • Tier 1: Recruits with at least a high school diploma

    • Tier 2: Recruits with a GED

    • Tier 3: Recruits without a high school diploma or GED

Tier 2 recruits may move to Tier 1. To do so, they must earn at least 15 hours of college credit. However, some military recruiters recommend attempting to enlist as a Tier 2 recruit or complete the ASVAB test before enrolling in college courses to move to Tier 1.

The Department of Defense uses this system to prioritize recruiting applicants with higher credentials and whom they deem more likely to satisfy their initial military obligation. Based on this, the Department of Defense requires at least 90% of all recruits overall to be from Tier 1. Each branch of the military has their own requirements for the percentage of Tier 2 recruits they enlist each year. Most branches do not admit Tier 3 recruits unless under certain circumstances or they make special exceptions.

Here is a third party opinion about getting into the navy: “I don’t have a high school diploma unfortunately, only a GED. I’ve attended college a year as well I really want to join the Navy because I think it’ll help me become a better person in some ways. I’d like to signup and join ASAP. I’m also a thin guy, I haven’t really worked out in a while but I know I can do at least 30 proper pushups and am real flexible when it comes to the sit and reach, running maybe a problem though. Getting in with only a GED opens and closes sometimes. You would need 15 college credits to be able to join because of your GED. Sometimes you can get in with a GED if you score a 50 on the ASVAB. It depends on where the window is.”

“As long as that year worth of college consists of 100 levels or higher courses . That elevates your GED to the same level as a HS diploma. But you still have to meet all the other requirements. Have you taken the ASVAB yet? If you hadn’t tried to continue your education the Navy wouldn’t even look at you. With those college credits it shows people you realized you needed to do more and did it. They work for you, not label you in a negative way. The only one who could do that is you.”
