Enlistment In The Armed Forces Is A Very Important Decision

Why did I join the military?

Before enlisting, think carefully about what it means to be a soldier for eight years. Every member of the military, from the medic to the mechanic, is trained to fight and to kill, and the ongoing conflicts prove that fighting and killing can begin very suddenly. You may enlist to get job training or money for college, but eventually you may be faced with war. You owe it to yourself to think seriously about when you believe it is justified to kill another person.

Many of the details about enlistment are not well explained to people considering joining the military. Recruits may not understand the specifics of the enlistment agreement, the possibility of recruiter fraud, the limitations of college funding available through the military, and the problems faced by veterans when they leave the armed forces. It is important to learn all you can before you join. Remember that if you enlist, and decide you dont like it, you cannot quit.

Reasons Not To Join The Military

Why Did I Join The Military

Everybodys always talking about why you should join the military, so I decided to give you five reasons not to join the military. Here they are in no particular order.

    1. You want an education and have at least $100,000 just sitting around for you to use.

Education is very expensive, and $100,000 is actually a very conservative estimate for a four-year degree. If you don’t want to take advantage of the military paying 100% of your tuition while on active duty and giving you upward of $50,000 through the GI Bill to use on active duty or after you get out, then the military is not for you.

    2. You absolutely do not want to have a job that gives you any kind of vacation time.

If you are one of those people who never likes being away from the workplace, then the military is not for you. The military gives you 30 days of paid vacation every year starting with your first year. It could take 20 years with some civilian companies to accrue that much time off.

    3. You get a scared feeling every time you even think about leaving your hometown.

Some people like where they live and have no desire to travel the world at someone else’s expense. The military has installations all over the world and gives its members opportunities to travel like no other company in the world.

    4. You would feel way too guilty receiving free medical care for you and your family.

    5. You want to be really old when you finally retire from a company.

    Racism In The Military

The military has policies to overcome racism in its ranks. Despite its authoritarian structure it has not succeeded.

During the current wars, Arabs have been labeled towel-heads or sand-niggers, while there were reports of cross burnings and KKK gatherings on military grounds. During the Persian Gulf War, for example, half of the troops deployed were black while white soldiers were more likely to remain in the U.S. or be stationed elsewhere.

The few opportunities that exist in the military benefit primarily educated, white soldiers. While one-third of the enlistees are people of color, only 11 percent of the officers are. Non-white enlistees tend to get low skill, combat-related jobs. Disproportionate numbers of African-Americans and Latinos face courts martial and receive bad discharges. One out of three black GIs will get a bad discharge.

Joining the Military | Why I joined the Air Force over other branches

This Veterans Day, as our nation honors those who served in our military branches, we asked team members at Bradley-Morris/RecruitMilitary what compelled them to join the military.

I was a senior in high school on September 11, 2001. I went to the recruiting station the next day. I wanted to be part of the suppression of future terrorist attacks. I tested well enough to go a number of directions in the military, and the infantry was the most attractive option to me. I felt like I was at a crossroads: I could sit and watch others do the heaving lifting, or I could do the lifting myself.

    • Chris Newsome, Vice President of Candidate Acquisition andSergeant Airborne Infantry 11B2P, U.S. Army

I thought long and hard about joining the military. My family all served in either the Army or Air Force. So, by my junior year of college I was set on joining the military. I wanted to serve my country. I wanted a challenge. I wanted to be different than my buddies that I grew up with.

    • Larry Slagel, Chief Operating Officer andCaptain , U.S. Marine Corps

I saw Top Gun when I was 12 and a year later attended a wedding where the best man was an F-14 instructor pilot. He talked to me about all the ways Americans can serve in the military and fly pointy-nosed jets. That ultimately led to me applying and being accepted to the Naval Academy when I was 16.

    If You Dont Like Exercise

It should go without saying that the military is going to demand that you run, push, pull, sit-up, and climb on a regular basis.

While some jobs demand more than others, every soldier, , Seaman and Airman is expected to pass physical fitness tests.

You dont need to be a stud to succeed in the military, but if you really hated P.E. in high school, I dont suggest joining up.

    About The Military Services

The U.S. Military has five Services: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Each Service has an active-duty and Reserve component. Additionally, the Army and Air Force have Guard components that are controlled by state governments, unless they are called to serve during emergencies or support military objectives. While all the Service branches need physicians, keep in mind that Navy physicians serve the Marine Corps as well as the Navy, and members of the Coast Guard rely on the Public Health Service instead of the Military. There are also some differences in the career paths available for different active-duty Services and different Reserve and Guard components.

    • Licensed physicians can serve in the Military either full or part time and even receive a signing bonus. The Military provides the requisite tools to practice a specialty and spend time with patients without worrying about the overheads.

The Army Is Not Adult Daycarethis Misconception Gets People Killed

One of the things I despise most is the idea that the Army serves the soldier. The Army doesn’t serve you you serve your country by joining the Army. Fortunately, there are very few people that believe this because Basic Combat Training does an outstanding job of smoking that idea out of recruits’ heads. But still, people who think of the Army as an adult daycare facility are out there making life for other soldiers far worse and sometimes more dangerous. Immature people who misunderstand the purpose of the Army usually want access to the Army’s benefits without understanding the sacrifices and responsibilities associated with serving.

Even though the Army does have benefits that help soldiers and families throughout their lives, these benefits are not available anywhere else, so it makes sense for civilians to join the military to get them. But those benefits are not what I’m talking about. In fact, if you serve, I highly recommend that you get involved in all the beneficiary programs you can. Doing so will enable you to be a better soldier now and a better civilian afterwards.

What I am talking about is the idea that the Army is just a job that’s impossible to get fired from or a steady source of income for anyone who can twiddle his thumbs and stay out of sight. Usually, I don’t care what people think. However, this kind of attitude usually leads to a sub-par performance.
