Military Car Rental Discounts For Official Travel

For official military travel, the US Department of Defense has negotiated contracted, discounted rates with most major car rental companies. The perks or add-ons that come with each military official travel rental are largely the same: unlimited mileage, free collision damage waiver , free underage drivers , and free additional drivers. Two exceptions are Avis and Budget, which offer military discounts through Veterans Advantage.

Since participating car rental companies offer contracted rates and similar benefits, comparison between them is largely a moot point. The discount will generally be in the range of 5-15% off regular rates, occasionally more. However, since car rental rates tend to fluctuate based on availability and demand, sometimes the contracted military rate will actually be HIGHER than the currently available base rate. The amount of the discount will depend on location and date of rental.

Heres a quick example: a search for Alamo and Dollar car rental at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on the same dates with and without military official travel rates returned the following:

Alamo Rent-A-Car without military discount was $64.45 per day vs. $56 per day with the official travel military discount, a savings of 13%. When combined with the free CDW and free underage and additional drivers, this is clearly a pretty good deal.

In addition to car rentals, military members can also enjoy a discounted airfare. Many domestic airlines offer discounts for off-duty flights that range from 20 to 50 percent off. Some even go as high as 65 percent.

In addition to the discounts offered directly through Enterprise for rental cars, the company partners with others in the travel industry to bring great rewards to military members who need or want to travel. For instance, United and JetBlue Airlines both offer at least five percent discounts on flights, and JetBlue waives baggage fees.
