How To Become An Officer

Requirements to Join the Navy

To not add redundancies and be repetitive, Ill be more specific when it comes to officers.

There are four ways to become a Commissioned Naval Officer.

Option one is to join the Navy with a college degree. This route requires the new college graduate to attend Officer Candidate School , a 12-week program.

OCS is designed to condition an officer recruit to assume the role and responsibilities of a Naval Officer in the Fleet.

Option two is by joining while in college through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship program.

Naval Academy students are midshipmen that train to become commissioned officers on active duty in the Navy while in school.

They attend the academy, graduate with their bachelors degree, and begin their Naval career as an officer in one fell swoop.

Direct Commission

Option four is through direct commission.

Career professionals such as doctors, dentists, lawyers, engineers, or chaplains receive commissioning minus the typical prerequisites of the previous three options.

Warrant Officers And Non

Navy Chief Warrant Officers are officers that have advanced beyond the enlisted ranks but still rank below a commissioned officer.

They are technical specialists that perform beyond the rank of a Master Chief Petty Officer in their occupational field.

Non-Commissioned Officers are higher-ranking enlisted members who demonstrate leadership abilities and typically start at the rank of E-4.

Difference Between Officer And Enlisted

Enlisted members constitute a large part of the Fleet and do most work hands-on, whereas Officers make up a smaller portion, manage operations, and are the highest ranking.

To put things plainly, junior enlisted members would be your cashiers, stockmen, and general maintenance of a grocery store your supervisors would be your staff non-commissioned officers and your Officers would round out the general management roles.

Commissioned Officers oversee and direct operations and command units but rely on enlisted members technical abilities to ensure the job is completed.

Meeting With A Recruiter

A recruiter is responsible for ensuring an applicant is qualified and that they are aware of the long-term commitment they are about to make.

All questions should be directed toward a recruiter, as they will either have the answer or know the appropriate person who would know it, ranging from qualifications to benefits and pay.

Arrangements to meet with a recruiter can be made using an online locator to find an office nearest you or if the distance is an issue maybe a phone call may be more convenient.

Alternatively, most of the recruiting process can be completed online.

During a typical meeting, a recruiter will guide you through the various career options available, education opportunities, and possibly even cash bonuses.

Think of recruiters as gatekeepers into the Navy.

The more prepared you are to complete the application, the faster the process will go.

List Of Disadvantages Of Joining The Navy

    1. It involves frequent and long deployments.By enlisting in the Navy, you can expect being separated from your loved ones for long periods of time on your deployments. Depending on your contract, you could be in for tours of duty that can last up to 3 years. Unlike other branches of the US military, the Navy always deploy sailors into the ocean because of the need to monitor certain ocean channels at all times. In fact, you could be away even during times of peace.

    2. It requires a lot of time to be spent at sea, which is bad if you are seasick. While spending long periods out at sea could serve as an advantage for other people, there are some who cannot bear with it, especially if they are seasick or just afraid of being too long at sea. As the Navy bulks of its travel by water, it is best to consider your physical capabilities carefully before applying.

    3. It involves trainings that are too rigorous and challenging for an individual. Many people note the difficulties recruits will have to undergo during months of training to become a full-pledge Navy personnel. Like in other military branches, trainees will have to wake up early and get into physical training that may not be fitted for them, not to mention that there are no special treatments here, even if you are a female. Not only this, but it also imposes high requirements to join. Remember that the Navy requires the highest aptitude test standard of all the US military branches in order for people to join.

What you NEED to join the Navy

Men are expected to keep their hair short and neat.

A religious accommodation request can be submitted for personnel to wear a beard.

    What About Family Life

Being in the Merchant Navy means that one may or may not have a social life. It can also mean that merchant navy officers could have little or no family life for the time at which he is at sea. It is natural for any person to want to have his or her family on board the ship and this is possible too. One thing to be noted is that the word family only means spouse and children and not parents or any other relatives.

To bring ones family on board a ship, there is a particular procedure that needs to be followed, and it can only be done with the permission of the company for which the officer is working. The family of the officer must also meet specific requirements such as health and fitness. Since the capacity on a ship is limited, not everybody can bring their families aboard. Hence, an officer with a higher rank is more likely to get permission to bring his family onboard than an officer with a lower rank.

Whether to bring anyone along also depends on the route that the ship is taking. Bringing a family is not allowed for the people who are on a ship in conflict regions like the Middle East.

Get In Shape Before Boot Camp

Do not assume the Navy will get you in shape from a de-conditioned sedentary person. You need to have an ability to run , do push-ups and crunches, and have the ability to swim and tread water. If you fail any of the physical standards, you will get to spend any “free” time doing extra workouts early or late in the day. So arrive in shape!

During Navy boot camp, recruits will take their initial swim test, learn details about the Navy rank and ratings, and go through intense physical conditioning. They’ll learn military drills, shipboard safety such as firefighting, and receive weapons training. It’s intense and challenging, and Navy boot camp is not for everyone. Before you can depart for Navy basic training, you must pass an initial fitness assessment they give you are the recruiter’s office. Once again, do not assume that the minimum standards on any fitness test is the peak you should strive to achieve. If your goal is the minimum standard, you will be borderline pass / fail and likely on a bad day, fail the test when it counts for your graduation or advancement.
