What It Was Like To Be Stationed On A Us Navy Destroyer Out To Sea
By | Submitted On January 13, 2011
The first time I ever laid eyes on her, the USS DAVID R. RAY , a Spruance class destroyer, I was in the Philippines, and the ship was going to be pulling up alongside, our submarine tender ship, I was presently on. I was standing outside on deck, leaning against the rails, and I could see two officers standing amidships, watching their destroyer, getting tied up to us.
It looked small, compared to the submarine tender I was on already. The two officers who were standing on deck, were smoking big cigars. I later learned it was the CO and XO, who had a love, for cigars.
A couple of months later, I would be transferred to, and stationed on the destroyer, I was looking at right now. When I finally did transfer to the USS DAVID R. RAY, I caught up to the ship, while it was on a WESTPAC, which meant, it was out to sea, in the Pacific, and Indian Ocean. When I did get to the ship, and landed on the helo deck, the XO came out, and met me. He gave me a brand new, USS DAVID R. RAY baseball hat. He turned out to be one of the coolest officers in the Navy, that I worked for.
The going rate was usually always 20% interest, on whatever you borrow. There were a few guys, that loaned money out like that, on a regular basis. These days, I guess they call them, check cashing stores now. Anyway, the captain was chewing this one seaman out really big time.
He has worked for himself for the last 20 years, and lives in San Diego.

How Long Will I Be Away From Home
Sailors rotate between sea and shore duty. You may spend three years assigned to a ships command and then rotate to serve three more years at a shore command. You will not be at sea during your entire Navy career. During your sea tour, you may live off-base nearby, but must be available to travel with the ship for deployments or training.
A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

Suffolk England United Kingdom
Base: RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall
Best reason to be stationed there: British nostalgia. Now that Downton Abbey is over, it may be time to jump across the pond and actualize your dream of living in the English countryside surrounded by castles, historic houses, and lilting accents.
Suffolk is charming in itself, but also serves as a great portal to the rest of the UK and Europe. London is only an hour away by train, and Scotland is an easy day trip for those that want to take a Scotch whisky tour and look for the Loch Ness Monster.
Best base amenity: Theres really nice new housing on Lakenheath that gets rave reviews. But it does come with a big caveat: waterbeds are not allowed.
Why you wouldn’t want to live there: Lakenheath is a small, quiet village. This means your best bet for restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment are in Cambridge — about 45 minutes away — and traffic is said to be “bloody awful.” Also worth a mention: wintertime weather is pretty drab. Think rain and wind and only seven to eight hours of daylight.
Final word: Although the Brits may not be known for the indigenous diversity of their food, theyre certainly known for frying it. Youll eat your fill of tasty fish & chips here and wash it down with many a pint of beer. Or cider. Or both. Cheers!

Kodiak Naval Operating Base And Forts Greely And Abercrombie National Historic Landmark
Kodiak Naval Operating Base, with its air station, submarine base, North Pacific Force, and joint operations center for the Navy, Army, and Army Air Force, was operational at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It was then the principal advance naval base in Alaska and the North Pacific. Coordinating with the naval establishments at Sitka to the east and Dutch Harbor to the west, its flying boats made vital patrols of the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and North Pacific Ocean. The ships and submarines of North Pacific Force played critical roles in the Aleutian Campaign. Establishment of the joint operations center allowed for coordinated planning to drive the Japanese from the North Pacific.
Learn More About WWII in Alaska
World War II had a major impact on Alaska. At the height of the War more than 100,000 American and Canadian soldiers were stationed in Alaska. Alaska’s infrastructure grew immensely as a result. Roads, ports, and airfields were improved or constructed to facilitate the transportation of troops and supplies. An impact that many people are unaware of is the forced evacuation of the Native population of the Aleutian Islands by Japanese and American forces.
Do Navy Nurses See Combat
A medic in the U.S. Navy could see combat if they are trained to fight side-by-side with combat units.
Or, they may receive focused training that takes them away from the battlefield where you focus your work more in a traditional clinical setting.
Medics that work alongside combat units receive additional training, especially if they serve with Special Forces.
The United States Navy offers demanding training programs like the Special Operations Combat Medic for this purpose.
Regardless, it is possible to see combat while serving as a Nurse though its not the norm for most medical professionals in the military.

Join The Military As An Enlisted Member
Enlisted members make up most of the military workforce. They receive training in a job specialty and do most of the hands-on work. Usually, youll sign up for four years of active duty and four years inactive. After youve completed your active duty time, you can either extend your contract or re-enlist if you want to continue serving.
Officers make up a much smaller part of the workforce. To join as an officer, you typically must have a four-year college degree and complete an officer program. You compete for promotion to continue your career. Most officers are managers who plan and direct operations. Others are professionals like doctors and lawyers. Officers get paid more than enlisted members and enjoy certain other benefits.
You dont have to join as an officer to become one though. You can join as an enlisted member and attend officer training later on.

Find Active Duty Military Personnel
The quickest way to find someone in the military is to visit the official Servicemembers Civil Relief Act website. The form can be used to request a certificate that verifies active duty status on a specified date. To submit a request, youll need the following information:
- First, youll need the persons First Name, Middle Name, and Last Name
- Next, youll need the specific date for which you wish to verify service
- Date of birth and/or social security number. You can search using a date of birth, without an SSN, but without the SSN, the Defense Manpower Data Center cannot verify that this is the same individual that your query refers to. The persons name and date of birth alone do not uniquely identify an individual.
- Check all of the data before clicking the submit button
- The response may take up to 15 seconds after clicking submit
You are not required to create an account for single record requests. To submit requests for multiple individuals, users must create an account. Creating an account allows a user to upload request files with multiple names, download result files, and download certificates.

Time On Ship Or Submarine
Most Sailors are assigned to ships or submarines for three year periods, followed by three years of shore duty. That does not mean they will be deployed to sea for the entire three years that they are assigned to a ship or submarine. The ships and subs also spend a significant amount of time docked at their home port for regular maintenance for both machine and crew. Most ships deploy to sea duty for months at a time . Then they return to their homeport for four or five months . One great thing about coming back home to port is you will always be near a beach town. It is something else to consider when thinking about joining the Navy.
Just because you are onshore duty assignment, doesn’t mean you won’t get deployed or travel to other bases around the world. The Navy will require both volunteers and non-volunteers to do Individual Augmentee Duty. Those selected work outside of their regular Navy job, and are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to assist the Army and with combat missions and patrols.
Best Navy Bases For Singles
Military life is not much different than civilians when it comes to the stark difference between where singles and married couples want to live.
While military families want somewhere safe, quiet, and with good schools a single person wants action and nightlife.
Thankfully, the U.S. Navy is one of the best branches to join for single people since you have more of an opportunity to see the world as well as live on a coast.

What Do I Need To Know
If you are in the United States , getting married as a member of the military is much the same as civilian marriages. You don’t need advanced permission and there is no special military paperwork to fill out before the marriage. You simply get married according to the laws of the state where the marriage is taking place after obtaining a marriage license off-base.
If you are overseas and marrying a foreign national, it’s a different story. There are multiple forms to complete you must obtain counseling and your commander’s permission your spouse must undergo a security background check and pass a medical examination. Finally, the marriage has to be “recognized” by the United States Embassy. The entire process can take several months.
Regardless of where or who, once married, if the spouse is non-military, the military member can bring a copy of the certified marriage certificate to the Personnel Headquarters on the base to receive a dependent ID card for the spouse, and enroll the spouse in DEERS , to qualify for military benefits such as medical coverage and commissary and base exchange privileges.
Getting Married On Base
The point of contact is the chaplain’s office. Each military base has one chapels that are used for religious services. One can get married in a base chapel, just as one can get married in a church off-base. Base chaplains offer a complete variety of marriage choices, including religious , non-religious, casual, civilian-formal, and military-formal.
If the wedding is conducted by a military chaplain, there is never a fee.
