How Long Can Civilians Stay On A Military Base

Each base has its own rules, but typically, visitors have to leave all designated areas by 10 P.M. Nonetheless, you can stay overnight. Most bases will have visitor accommodations that you can avail of. Some bases allow the service member to stay in that accommodation with their guest. However, note that you will not be allowed to sleep in the barracks.

Exceptions

However, not everyone can go to a military base. If you apply for base access and get rejected, it is referred to as a barment. Before you are issued a pass, the military does a background check. Hence, if you:

  • have been or currently is a convicted felon
  • have been or currently is a registered sex offender
  • have been forcibly removed from a base and asked not to return
  • have tried to enter a base without permission
  • have been barred from another base
  • have been affiliated with a gang

Then, it might be a reason why you are denied access to a base.

Military Base Access For Civilians

First, lets get one thing straight: You CANNOT just pull up to a military base and enter it as if you are visiting your grandmas. Its advised to take some obligate steps before that and other things you need to prepare. This section will walk you through what has to be done:

To start, you will need a military base pass. The requirements for this vary from base to base. So, it is necessary to check with the specific base you intend to visit. Most bases will have what you need on their official website, or they will have a separate dedicated site you can navigate to for the information. In any case, you want to be looking for the Visitors Center.

You can click here to search for a particular bases information or call the number provided to reach out to the bases Visitor Center.

After that, you will need to make sure you have a sponsor. The sponsor needs to be a service member and complete a sponsorship form. This form will likely include the following info:

  • The visitors date of birth, birth city, drivers license number, and social security number .

Note: A sponsorship form has to be filled out to request a pass for EACH visitor.

If you are heading to base in your sponsors vehicle, you will just need a valid ID photo and your drivers license.

However, keep in mind that some bases only allow their service members to sponsor one guest in their vehicle at a time. Therefore, it is important that you check with the Visitors Center for specific restrictions.

Should You Enroll In A Tactical Training Course For Civilians

The short answer, of course, would be yes. If you are ever concerned about your personal safety, there is no reason to not sign up for a self-defense courseeven if its just the basics.

However, the long answer is a bit more complicated. As Ive previously mentioned, tactical training courses for civilians do tend to feature the handling and use of deadly weapons such as knives and firearms. And for a lot of people, this kind of training might not be ideal.

The reason for this is that, while you can enroll in tactical training courses , in many countries around the world, the laws in those countries might not actually let you use those weapons for self-defense.

Indeed, most countries outside of the US have strong restrictions on the ownership and use of deadly weapons, often requiring that the gun be registered and that the owner have a permit to use that gun. That is, of course, if you will even be allowed to have a permit at all many countries like South Korea, Australia, and Denmark do not issue gun licenses for personal protection.

With this in mind, then, I would suggest checking with your local laws first before deciding to enroll in a tactical training course for civilians. Being properly informed of the laws in your country will help you avoid legal issues if you end up using deadly force in a self-defense situation.

How Much Does Tactical Training Cost

Just like the length of the course you are enrolling in, tactical training programs tend to be more expensive the more advanced the training is.

For example, an afternoon course on close combat self-defense conducted indoors will typically run you around 70 to 100 US dollars. Meanwhile, an advanced two-day course on high-powered rifle marksmanship can cost well over 200 dollars, not to mention that these courses will typically have prerequisite programs that you have to enroll in separately.

Besides that, you also have to factor in additional costs for equipment and transportation, especially for firearms training courses. While most hand-to-hand combat, edged weapon, and handgun courses will give you training equipment you can rent out for the course, you will be required to bring your own equipment for high-powered weapon training courses.

For these advanced courses, you are also encouraged to bring your own food and drinks as they will typically be conducted in outdoor ranges.

However, not all tactical training courses are quite as expensive. In fact, many police agencies across the United States actually offer basic self-defense training courses free of charge. As they are performed by actual law enforcement officers, these training courses are quite informative, especially with regards to the law and how to exercise your rights.

Other Things To Know When You First Visit A Military Base

Dress Code

Yes, there is a dress code. This applies to visitors and guests who are typically posted at the offices and public buildings. Expectations vary by base, but generally, belly shirts, baseball caps, and flip flops should not be worn inside. Some bases are more strict than others, so your best bet is to not show too much skin and wear anything revealing when visiting the base buildings.

Flag Ceremonies

Flags are raised in a short ceremony called the Reveille each morning on base. If you are outside and suddenly, there is bugle music, be sure to stop walking and face the nearest flagpole. When the flag is raised, it will be followed by a bugle blast. Then, you are free to move again.

This process repeats at sunset when the flags are taken down in a ceremony called the Retreat or Taps. Make sure you apply the same rules of respect.

Exchange

There are several different names for this.

  • The Army and Marines call it a Post Exchange
  • The Navy calls it a Navy Exchange

But its purpose is the same. An exchange is an on-base department store where you can find goods, such as furniture, decor, shoes, clothes, gifts, etc. You should go here with your sponsor, he or she will need to show a military ID if you want to purchase something.

Commissary

This is the name for the bases grocery store. You can buy food tax-free. But generally, you must wait in a long queue to pay for whatever you have picked up. You will have to show a military ID when you pay as well.

Can A Civilian Get Special Forces Training

I

Civilians can get special forces training by applying to join the U.S. special operation units. However, this requires you to join the army, so its better to look for a private course. There are similar private options similar to real special forces training, and you can apply as a civilian.

You can enlist for special forces as a civilian. However, theres no guarantee that youll be accepted.

The special forces of any military branch in any country are the best of the best. Its in your best interest to look for a private special forces course instead.

That said, you can apply for a tactical combat course instead. While you wont leave at anywhere near the level of real special forces, youll at least have the option to train like a real S.O. combatant.

However, there are drawbacks, including the lack of teamwork and cooperation. Special forces are always taught to work as a team. That takes a lot of effort, time, and patience, and youll be hard-pressed to find any private military course that forces team synergy.

Additionally, special forces use classified techniques and equipment that the public has no access to. So, you wont get to experience that either.

Just Wondering Is There Anything A Civilian Can Do To Get Military Training Without Joining The Military

I’m probably going to get chewed out here but I’m curious as to what I can do to get military quality training without joining the military. I’m 23 and lately find myself having thoughts of what it would have been like for me if I joined the military at some point in my life/joined now even though I know it’s not something I want to pursue really. I do want to get trained like someone in the military though so I can help people when they need it and know how to react to certain situations.

Any advice would be great if you guys have it.

Edit: Okay, I get it, I won’t be able to get the full experience without joining the military. I was hoping that I would be able to become like Oliver Queen without all the stranded on the island thing and could just train on my own. You guys have been helpful though . Thanks guys.

Meet The Basic Requirements

To apply for a civilian job in the military, you need to be a U.S. citizen. You also need to pass a background check and a drug screening. If the job you intend to apply for includes the designation “status candidate,” then you may also need to meet additional criteria to qualify for the role. Read these requirements carefully to determine if you’re eligible. It may also help to familiarize yourself with different terms the Department of Defense uses to classify applicants and determine eligibility. These classifications include:

What Is The Hardest Training In The Military

Almost every veteran from any branch of the military claims that their training was the hardest. The best way to evaluate the difficulty of military training is to look at the attrition rates. The attrition rate is the percentage of candidates that drop out of the training before completion.

Training for the US Army Special Forces has one of the highest attrition rates. Each year, about 3000 soldiers apply for the Special Forces. Only about 936 moved on to the training course in 2019. Of those who participated in the training, about 30% complete training.

The US Navy SEAL Team also has a high dropout rate. About 80% to 85% of candidates do not complete the training to become a Navy SEAL. However, there is a major difference between Special Forces and Navy SEAL training courses.

A larger portion of the Navy SEAL candidates is civilian recruits, which means that they did not have any prior military experience. Most of the candidates for the Special Forces are enlisted personnel. They have already completed basic training.

While most applicants are already enlisted personnel with a rank of E-3 or higher, civilian recruits can apply to the Special Forces. However, candidates must be active members of the National Guard and at least 20 years of age.
