What Are The Requirements For Ged Holders

Can I join the Army? – Army Jobs

It’s important for all recruits to meet certain physical and legal requirements regardless of if they have a high school diploma or GED. These requirements may relate to:

  • Mental and moral aptitude

  • Number of dependents

ASVAB test scores are crucial for entrance to all military branches. Most branches accept Tier 1 recruits with ASVAB scores in or above the 30th percentile. However, most branches seek Tier 2 recruits with ASVAB scores in or above the 50the percentile. If you have a GED but have a lower ASVAB score, consider completing 15 hours of college credit so you may enlist based on Tier 1 requirements rather than Tier 2 requirements.

Here’s a closer look at the requirements for Tier 2 GED holders to enter each branch of the military and what percentage of Tier 2 GED holders each branch typically admits each year:

Height And Weight Standards

For most of the military, male applicants need to be between 60 inches and 80 inches tall. For female applicants, the range is between 58 inches and 80 inches. The Marines have separate standards: Male applicants should be between 58 and 78 inches tall, and female applicants between 58 and 72 inches tall.

The services have body fat standards, which are only partly based on weight. During an initial screening, applicants are measured on a body fat chart. Those who weigh more than the limits on the chart are measured to ensure they fall within the service’s body-fat standards. Often physically fit and muscular/low body fat recruits can be over the height/weight standards but meet the body fat requirements.

I Have A Criminal Record Am I Going To Be Turned Down

Again, it depends. Soldiers and those who serve need to show that they have good moral character. They need to show that they are reliable when they are called upon. They need to show that in stressful situations, they will not break international law.

This is important as you need to show that you have changed since the time of your crimes and are no longer the person who had committed them! If you have committed one misdemeanor when you were 15, it probably wont hold you back .

If you have committed a series of misdemeanor crimes after you became an adult, you might struggle. But, if these stop a number of years ago and you can prove that you are a changed man or woman, you may be more likely to obtain a waiver special permission granted by the army to overlook your criminal past and allow you to enroll.

Moral Standard For Enlisting

In order to join the military, candidates must meet a certain criteria. The law classifies felonies as offenses of moral turpitude. However, the army will still consider applications on an individual basis. In other words, there arent any general rules that prevent felons from enlisting . First of all, during the interview, recruiters ask applicants about their criminal history. After that, they conduct a background check. If the applicant is a convicted felon, the army will consider several factors.

In short, the military wants to avoid hiring people that have disciplinary problems, pose a security threat, or otherwise disrupt the activities and morale of the armed forces. This is not to say that felons are automatically excluded. Instead, the recruitment process determines whether a convict learned from their past, became a better person, and therefore meets the militarys moral standards. To further illustrate, here is an example. A felon that is guilty of a violent crime or weapons violation must show that they dont pose a security threat, especially when they apply for a job that requires them to handle firearms and guns. To do so, the felon would highlight that they finished their sentence, attained a new job, and regularly engaged with society without causing any threats or harm.

Requirements For Joining The Military

The U.S. military has six branches of service: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Space Force. The requirements to join are similar for all six. The main differences are in age limits, test scores, and fitness levels. Men and women meet different fitness standards. Besides the requirements listed here, a branch may have other requirements.

Age Limits for Enlisting

You must be at least 17 to enlist in any branch of the active military. The oldest you can be to enlist for active duty in each branch is:

  • Coast Guard: 31

  • Air Force: 39

Some branches have different age limits for their part-time Reserve and National Guard. Visit each service’s recruiting website for its part-time age limits.

Requirements for Enlisting If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

  • Have a permanent resident card, also known as a Green Card

  • Currently live in the U.S.

  • Speak, read, and write English fluently

Educational and Testing Requirements for Enlisting

  • Your scores on all 10 subtests determine which job specialties you qualify for.

Meps Mental Health Screening

The military uses a mental health screening to see if there are any potential red flags that will prevent you from carrying out your role fully with the military.

Furthermore, the military wants to verify that you arent a danger to yourself or others.

Both a military recruiter and an evaluator at MEPS will ask you questions about your mental health through a one-on-one interview.

The interview isnt too detailed if there are no concerns or red flags within the your medical record.

Prepare yourself to answer questions honestly and truthfully, but most agree that you dont need to bring up any preexisting conditions unless it has greatly impacted your life in the past.

Benefits Of Joining The Military At 30

The military is more appropriate for younger people as most recruits enlist after graduating from high school or in their early 20s.

Nonetheless, some recruits arrive at boot camp in their 30s or early 40s.

What are the benefits of joining the military at 30?

In general, older recruits pursue the military for the same benefits as someone half their age.

The U.S. Armed Forces is a terrific organization to consider joining if you want a steady paycheck, dependable benefits, as well as the opportunity to meet new people and see the world.

Moreover, the military is exceptional at building character and teaching discipline which can help you in any avenue you pursue.

Service members train for a variety of professions and additional financial aid is available to those that want to pursue a college degree before or after serving their country.

These benefits are often more appreciated by service members in their 30s since theyve already had real-world experience.

Consequently, joining the military at 30 may help you expand on job skills and training you already have, or introduce you to a brand new profession.

Is Having Anxiety Or An Anxiety Disorder Disqualifying

As we mentioned earlier, anxiety is a broad term which covers several different mental illnesses.

For example, bipolar disorder and PTSD are extremely severe forms of mood disorders and usually difficult to receive a waiver.

Meanwhile, other forms of anxiety such as having panic attacks or dealing with mild forms of depression may allow you to obtain a waiver.

The military examines whether you recently had inpatient or outpatient care related to your anxiety.

It also studies if you took any prescription medication to help deal with anxiety in the last year or last three years depending on the condition.
