How Long Will I Be Away From Home

Sailors rotate between sea and shore duty. You may spend three years assigned to a ships command and then rotate to serve three more years at a shore command. You will not be at sea during your entire Navy career. During your sea tour, you may live off-base nearby, but must be available to travel with the ship for deployments or training.

A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

Physical + Moral Standards

Regardless of your age, you must have a physical to indicate that you are healthy enough to serve in case you are deployed. Where you take your physical depends on the program you want to enter. HPSP applicants will take a physical at a Military Entrance Processing Station near them, and USU applicants will take their physicals through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board. You are also required to pass a security investigation and demonstrate the high moral standards expected of a physician and a military officer.

Waivers are available on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the program, you may want to apply early to give the Services enough time to approve your waiver.

Army Reservist Age Limit Raised To 52

The upper age limit for some soldiers to join the Army Reserve has been increased by nine years to 52.

The upper age limit for some soldiers to join the Army Reserve has been increased by nine years to 52. The Ministry of Defence said the age limit for individuals with specific qualifications or experience has been raised from 45 to 50, while the maximum age for ex-regular soldiers joining was increased earlier this year from 43 to 52.

An MoD spokeswoman said: “We make no apology for revising the age requirements for ex-regular soldiers to join the Reserves and share their wealth of knowledge and expertise. All recruits have to meet strict fitness requirements, or could face discharge.”

The upper age limit for ex-regular soldiers to join was increased in May to “better reflect demographics and health of the population” and widen the recruitment pool, the MoD said.

The change comes as the Army’s plan to cut regular troops and replace them with reservists came under fire yesterday, after it was revealed the size of the part-time force increased by just 20 in the last 12 months.

Figures showed the trained strength of the volunteer Army Reserve rose from 19,290 in October last year to 19,310 a year later.

Tory MP John Baron said the plans to replace 20,000 regular troops with 30,000 reservists were a “shambles” and shadow defence secretary Vernon Coaker warned the forces could be left with a “dangerous” gap.

What Is The Maximum Age Limit For Each Branch Of The Military

What Is the Oldest Age You Can Join the Army?

It truly depends on whether or not you are a non-prior or prior service member, looking at enlisting into the active duty or reserve components, etc. In the United States military system, you may enlist into any branch at the age of 17 years old with parental consent, or 18 years old without parental consent.

Age waivers, although rare, are possible. Usually happening if one cannot be sent to basic training by their birthday, thus making them ineligible to enlist if they are then past the required ages, age waivers can be received for just a few months easily.

In the United States Army, Army Reserves, and Army National Guard, the maximum age allowed to enlist and ship to basic training is 35 years old. The Army experimented for quite some time allowing anyone up to the age of 42 years old to enlist and complete basic training. On April 1st, 2011, they reverted this to the lower age limit.

In the United States Air Force, to enlist, you cannot be younger than 17 or older than 38 years of age. To join as an Officer, you cannot be younger than 18 or older than 39 years of age. To join as a healthcare, law or ministry professional, you cannot be younger than 18 or older than 48 years of age. In the Air Force Reserves, the maximum age is 34 years old. In the Air National Guard, the maximum age is 39 years old.

Age Cut Off For Military Service

Military jobs require alertness, stamina, strength and top physical conditioning, which diminish with age. According to the Harvard Medical School, aerobic capacity declines after age 25-30 along with changes in endurance, flexibility, reflexes, vision and muscle mass. Age eligibility rules are the most restrictive for active duty soldiers who are the backbone of the military.

The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and the Coast Guard all have a minimum age requirement of 17 with parental consent each branch has a different cut off for active duty enlistment, according to OMK.

Example:

  • U.S. Army: 35 years old
  • U.S. Navy: 34 years old
  • U.S. Air Force: 39 years old
  • Coast Guard: 27 years old

Age requirements for officers are different. For example, Navy officers can join up to the age of 41. The maximum age for Air Force officers is 39, or up to age 48 for some jobs like Navy ministers at the rank of an officer. The Army, Navy and Air Force allow men and women in their 30s to enlist in the Reserves and Guards.

Age Requirements Are Supplemented By Education Requirements

In most cases, the minimum age a new recruit may enter military service is 17 . However, a high school diploma or GED is usually required. Some branches of service may, depending on recruiting issues at any given time, offer alternatives such as allowing a new recruit who has a GED with college credits. Having a GED may subject the enlistee to additional standards not applied to those who have high school diplomas.

If the applicant does not meet the stricter standards for GED holders without college coursework, it may be possible to enroll in college to earn additional credit hours. This may be required by the branch of service applied for so you will need to try again under different standards.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

Maximum Age For Military Enlistment

Across the United States Armed Forces, the maximum age for enlistment for someone who has never served in the military before depends on the branch. For the Army, the maximum age is 35. For the Navy, age waivers start at 34-years-old. For the Air Force, the maximum age allowed to join is 39-years-old. The Marines have the lowest maximum age for regular military service at 28-years-old. Special Operations branches also have different maximum ages due to the physical challenges put upon the candidates compared to regular military service. These maximum ages can be waived if the recruit has the education, skills, experience that the military needs to fill its ranks. The same holds true for the Special Operations communities, where waivers are available, but only on a case by case basis and typically approved or disapproved by the commanding officer of the selection program or the community manager/detailer.

Often the age waivers that do get approved are those in the professional jobs fields .

The maximum age of non-prior service enlistment under Federal Law was 35-years-old. In 2006, the Army asked Congress to raise the age limit to 44-years-old. Congress did not approve this change, but raised the maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42.

Regardless of Federal Law, the military services are allowed to impose more strict standards, and many of them have. The maximum age for non-prior service enlistments for each service is:

Air Force Enlistment Age Raised To 3: Excellent Asvab Score Essential

The Air Force has raised the maximum age for enlistment from 27 to 39. They have chosen to increase the age due to a need to attract a pool of qualified individuals that have computer programming or foreign language experience. They especially want more multilingual recruits.

Since the Army caps the age for enlistment at 35, the Navy and 34 and the Marines at 28, this news makes the Air Force the military branch with the highest allowed recruiting age. This is great news for United States citizens that have reached a point in their career where they are looking for a different career path, if they are multilingual or have cyber work experience.

You may be wondering what educational requirements are for enlistment in the Air Force at an older age? As of right now, the requirements remain the same as before. This means Air Force recruits must get at least 36 points on the ASVAB*. Exclusions are created, however, for a few high school graduates that score lower than 36, but higher than 31. Yet, over 70 percent of those approved for an Air Force enlistment score 50 or above.

Its almost impossible get into the Air Force without a high school diploma. Less than 1% of all annual Air Force enlistments only have a GED. If a GED holder is trying to enlist, that person must score a 65 or higher on the AFQT* portion of the ASVAB.

Overview Of Military Requirements

The different types of military branches establish their own eligibility criteria, as explained by Todays Military. Age is just one factor taken into consideration. Only U.S. citizens and Green Card holders with legal permanent residency can join. A high school diploma or equivalency is also needed. Enlisting in the military further involves achieving a passing score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery . The recruiter uses ASVAB scores to determine which jobs in the military the recruit would be qualified to do.

A recruit must also pass a physical exam that also looks at underlying health conditions and mental health history. Certain disorders are likely to disqualify individuals from serving their country. Examples of likely disqualifiers identified by the Department of Defense include inflammatory bowel disease, night blindness, severe hearing loss, limited range of motion, heart valve disease and emphysema. A criminal record and ongoing substance abuse problems are other likely disqualifiers.

Not Having A High School Diploma Subjects Your Enlistment To Further Review

New recruits who have dropped out of high school, but have completed a GED may find their application for military service requires additional processing. The recruiter wants to know that the applicant is suitable for military service. Those who are eager to get into uniform as early as possible should know that not having a high school diploma could delay their entry into military service.
