Cool Jobs In The Air Force

The obvious first choice for everyone here is easy: pilot.

However, with only 1,100 pilot slots available every year, competition can be stiff.

You should also keep in mind that 500 550 of those pilot slots are reserved for Air Force Academy graduates, and 350 450 spots are reserved for ROTC members.

As a result, your prospects of landing a pilot slot are very low.

With that said, there are a wide variety of great jobs in the Air Force that dont involve piercing through the sky at Mach 1.

Some of the best jobs in the Air Force include things like:

  • Logistics planner

If youre 100% set on becoming a pilot, then you should consider going the Air National Guard route.

Air Force National Guard units are essentially the military reserve force, as well as the militia Air Force, of each state.

They fly all of the same aircraft that the regular full-time Air Force does F-16s, F-15s, A-10s, and even large cargo planes like the C5 Galaxy.

The upside is, theres no full-time commitment.

You still have to go to basic training, but youll only serve in a part-time role.

Tough Jobs In The Navy

Just like the other branches of the military, the Navy has its own set of challenging jobs .

They include:

Nuclear Field

One of the more challenging jobs to get in the Navy is in the Nuclear Field.

This field of work includes several specifications, and both officers and enlisted members make up this field.

As an enlisted seaman, you might be an electronics technician, electricians mate, or a machinists mate.

To get into this field, you must score well on the science, electronics, and math sections of the ASVAB test.

Once through boot camp, the first round of advanced training, called Nuke School.

Then, depending on which area of Nuke you are in, you have more schools between three to six months in length.

Also, the second school is not the end of it because you still have a six-month training program where students learn, hands-on, how to operate a nuclear propulsion plant.

Another tough Navy job is Special Warfare.

The community of seamen making up Special Warfare is close to 8,000 strong.

However, the Special Warfare Operators, or SEALs, make up a smaller percentage of the community .

Just getting to the training in Special Warfare is tough. However, making it through SEAL training is something else entirely.

Air Force basic training is just over eight weeks in length.

Every week, Air Force recruits pick up new skills.

Your time at Lakeland Air Force Base at Air Force boot camp begins with a physical fitness assessment to see where you initially stand.

What Is An Officer

Whats the best thing you feel you have done for your ...

The U.S. armed forces consist of officers and enlisted service members. The enlisted make up the vast majority of the military , while officers comprise a much smaller, but necessary, portion.

Officers are always higher ranking and often more educated than enlisted service members. They must have a bachelors degree, and more education becomes necessary as more promotions are achieved. As a result, officers take on a heavier workload and more responsibility. They plan missions and assign soldiers to complete necessary tasks. You can think of an officer as being similar to upper level management in the civilian world. As would be expected, officers tend to be older than enlisted soldiers . Additionally, jobs that require higher degrees or a large amount of specialized training in the civilian world are staffed only by officers in the military who have had the appropriate education.

There are many paths one could take to become an officer: completing an ROTC program, attending a service academy, senior military college, or , attending a Coast Guard-specific commissioning program, or commissioning with a previously earned degree.

What Are The Downsides To Joining The Military

It is important to remember that the military is a way of life. Before joining the military, you need to be sure that you are able to handle the military lifestyle and all of the moving, work, stress, and danger that comes with the job you cannot be solely interested in the educational or monetary benefits, as that is a recipe for failure. The following lists, made in consultation with current members of the armed forces, may help you get a better idea of what youre signing up for and what you can expect.

Are You Fit To Serve

The email that prompted this article was from a young man contemplating joining the military, but not quite sure what branch he wants to serve in. Arriving fit is his plan, but “how fit do you need to be to join the military?”

Here is his question:

“What is the overall physical fitness level of the new recruits when they arrive at boot camp. Will they have a chance to get into better shape for their next training? If I am going specifically for a special-forces group, what should be my decision be — Army, Navy or Marine, Air Force? I am in a bit of a pickle in understanding where I can best serve my country.”

First of all, good job on taking the time to think about what branch of the military you wish to serve. People who serve in the military, law enforcement or other public service professions are the backbone of this country. Having young people consider these professions makes me proud to be a veteran and motivates me to offer any assistance I can.

Now, arriving fit for any military or law-enforcement training program is a must. So preparing for these programs could take at least 6-12 months to be an above-average performer. However, as our adult population grows in waist size and decreases in fitness level, so have American children’s weight and fitness. These are our future military members, police officers, firefighters and EMTs. Anyone see a potential problem yet?

All Coast Guard basic training is conducted at one location in the US: Cape May, New Jersey.

Growing up in New Jersey, Ive been to Cape May several times.

I can tell you this, its not the part of New Jersey that most people think of when they think of NJ.

Its actually a very nice part of the state, and just so happens to be a popular vacation destination.

Like the other branches of the military, Coast Guard boot camp lasts 8 weeks, and the very first thing youll be tested on is your physical fitness.

Heres a handy bullet-list for whats expected for both men and women:

Before you even start boot camp, youll also have to meet the height and weight requirements, grooming standards, and tattoo policy.

While boot camp is located on the beach, its certainly no vacation!

Throughout boot camp, seaman recruits will do things like:

  • Firefighting
  • Physical training

Before you graduate boot camp, youll be required to pass the PT test as well.

After boot camp, Seaman recruits will then be assigned to one of the many bases throughout the country.

This isnt a decision to make on a whim, so take your time to figure out the perfect branch for you. You wont regret it.
