Should I Join The Marines

The US Marine Corps is actually a department of the Navy, and some Marines like to call it the mens department

Men and Women that serve in the Marines operate both on land and on sea-going ships, and historically have been tasked with responsibilities like:

  • Seizing and / or defense of Navy bases and supporting Naval campaigns
  • Development of amphibious landing tactics in conjunction with the other service branches.
  • Asymmetric warfare

Some guys that join the Marines have their sights set on it from a very young age, and its not necessarily the branch of the military that you just join up for fun.

to learn how to join the Marines.

Are You Fit To Serve

The email that prompted this article was from a young man contemplating joining the military, but not quite sure what branch he wants to serve in. Arriving fit is his plan, but “how fit do you need to be to join the military?”

Here is his question:

“What is the overall physical fitness level of the new recruits when they arrive at boot camp. Will they have a chance to get into better shape for their next training? If I am going specifically for a special-forces group, what should be my decision be — Army, Navy or Marine, Air Force? I am in a bit of a pickle in understanding where I can best serve my country.”

First of all, good job on taking the time to think about what branch of the military you wish to serve. People who serve in the military, law enforcement or other public service professions are the backbone of this country. Having young people consider these professions makes me proud to be a veteran and motivates me to offer any assistance I can.

Now, arriving fit for any military or law-enforcement training program is a must. So preparing for these programs could take at least 6-12 months to be an above-average performer. However, as our adult population grows in waist size and decreases in fitness level, so have American children’s weight and fitness. These are our future military members, police officers, firefighters and EMTs. Anyone see a potential problem yet?

How Do You Become A Navy Seal

All Navy SEALS get their start at arguably one of the toughest military training courses in the world: Basic Underwater Demolition / Seal Training, or BUD/S.

In short, its not easy.

As many as 80% of trainees fail or drop out before ever completing the course.

If you can survive the grueling 6 month Navy SEAL assessment course known as BUD/S, its still not over.

You then have to attend an additional 6-months of Training at SEAL Qualification Training or SQT.

Also, both enlisted and officers have to go through BUD/S, and no one gets special treatment.

In fact, its said that officers actually have a harder time at BUD/S because they will be potentially leading units into battle.

Upon completion of SQT, and a 6 month probationary period and individual specialized training, the candidate finally earns his right to wear the SEAL Trident.

It also should be noted that the Navy recently opened up the SEAL pipeline to women as well, although none have successfully completed BUD/S yet.
