Retiring Officers Above The Grade Of Warrant Officer Who Have Been The Subject Of Adverse Information Since Their Last Promotion

What you do at each rank as an 88M in the Army

An officer above the rank of warrant officer retires in the highest grade satisfactorily served, not necessarily the grade held the day before placement on the retired list.

When an officer applies for retirement, HRC reviews the officer’s file to see if there is any adverse information generated since the officer’s last promotion. If there is, AR 15-80 requires HRC to refer the officer’s case to the AGDRB. Even if there is no adverse information in the OMPF, the officer’s command or branch can refer the officer for a grade determination if there is adverse information reflecting conduct since the last promotion that is not required to be filed in the OMPF. The AGDRB will notify the officer what information the AGDRB will consider and provide the officer an opportunity to submit matters in support of retiring in their current grade. The officer does not have a right to appear before the AGDRB.

    What Is A Military Rank

The rank of any military person refers to their position in the rank-based chain of commandnot to be confused with an individual unit or organizational chain of command.

There are basic classifications of rankofficer and enlisted. There are also basic classifications within the rank structure. For example, the lowest ranks are considered junior enlisted, while the highest enlisted grades are considered as Senior enlisted NCOs or non-commissioned officers.

Among officers there are junior-level officers , and at the very top there are what are known as flag-level officers . And then there are Warrant Officers, who fit in between regular enlisted and regular officers in a more specialized type of duty.

Rank is awarded to enlisted troops via a combination of competitive exams, record reviews, and other processes. You have to be within a certain top percentile of the exam-takers to be considered eligible for promotion, and different branches of military service may include physical fitness criteria, off-duty education, and other areas to be influential factors in promotions at both the enlisted and officer levels.

Military rank is basically the specific designation earned: Airman First Class, for example, is a junior enlisted rank. Corporal is also a rank. Master Sergeant, Captain, Colonel, Private, etc. These are all examples of military rank.

This is NOT a rank but a pay grade and the two things are not necessarily the same thing, as well explore below.

    • U.S. Navy – Scroll down to “How do I find a friend or family member in the Navy?”

You may need to provide the military member’s Social Security number for the locator to help you. If they find the member, they’ll forward your request to them. Each locator has its requirements.

The U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard no longer provide military locator services.

    Warrant Officer Ranks & Insignias

Warrant Officers are known as the adaptive technical experts, combat leaders, trainers and advisors. They hold warrants from their service secretary and they specialize in specific military technologies or capabilities. They acquire their authority from the same source as commissioned officers, but they are considered specialists, compared to commissioned officers, who are considered generalists. The sequence of ranks for Warrant Officers are as follows:

Warrant Officer 1 Warrant officers are considered the tactical and technical experts of the Army. WO1 is the base-level rank, and primarily support operations from team or detachment through a battalion.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 This rank is considered an intermediate-level technical and tactical expert. Their responsibility is to support levels of operations from team or detachment through a battalion.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 This rank is considered as an advance-level technical and tactical expert. Their role is to support operations from a team/detachment through a brigade.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 This rank is considered as a senior-level technical and tactical expert. Their primary duty is to support brigade, battalion, division and corps operations.

    What Are The Rank Categories

    There are four hierarchical categories:

    • This refers to service members at the entry pay-grades. Each service branch has a different name for their junior enlisted personnel. Service branches also vary the level at which service members are no longer considered junior enlisted personnel. For instance, the Army and Marine Corps call an E-1 a private, the Air Force an airman basic, and in the Navy an E-1 is a seaman recruit. As entry level members gain time and experience, they assume more responsibilities. For example, an E-4 in the Army can be a corporal or a specialist, and although they are both paid the same, a corporal is expected to assume leadership responsibilities and has a higher rank than a specialist.
    • Non-commissioned officers: Non-commissioned officers include enlisted service members in pay grades E-5 through E-9.
    • Warrant officers: Service members in pay grades W-1 through W-5 are warrant officers.
    • Commissioned officers: Military commissioned officers hold the highest military ranks in the pay grades of O-1 through O-10.

What Is The Highest Military Rank

The highest military rank is O-10, or “five-star general.” It is symbolized by five stars for each of the military services. Although it is currently a part of the military service rank system, no officer has been promoted to it since World War II, when the rank was created. Only nine Americans ever have held this rank. The last living five-star general was Omar Bradley, who died in 1981.

The United States Border Patrol has given me that and more. After 20 years in the Army and 21 years in the USBP, I can truly say both have been rewarding experiences that I will continue to be proud of.

More On Entering With Advanced Rank

Almost all recruits who join with advanced rank are paid the rate of base pay for that advanced rank right from the first day of active duty. However, in most of the services, recruits do not get to wear the rank until they graduate from basic training.

Make sure the contract you sign has all of your qualifications for advance ranking and any additional steps you have to do to ensure you qualify. It is up to you to be proactive with the recruiter, or you could miss out on achieving a higher rank and pay more quickly. As with other enlistment incentives, advanced enlistment rank must be included on your enlistment contract.
