What To Know Before Joining The Navy

Army Special Forces: Rangers Night Stalkers And Green Berets

what to know before joining the navy | q& a

Do you have what it takes to join the elite Army Rangers of the 75th Ranger Regiment? Maybe youd rather be a Night Stalker in the Special Operations Aviation Regiment, SOAR, or possibly a Green Beret.

Generally, soldiers in any of these units:

  • Are U.S. citizens
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Qualify for secret security clearances
  • Hold General Technical Scores of about 110 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB
  • Meet or exceed fitness requirements. Expect pull-ups, push-ups, timed runs and 10-mile marches carrying a 45-pound rucksack. And, lots of swimming.

You can request assignment to an Army special forces unit when you first enlist. A recommendation to attend the Special Operations Preparation Course depends on your ASVAB results and how you perform during basic and advanced individual training.

You can also join after you enlist or become an officer. Youll generally need three years of honorable service before qualifying.

What To Wear To Basic Training Graduation

You can wear just about whatever you want to basic training graduation. Wear something nice enough so as to not embarrass your recruit, but there are no policies enforcing strict dress codes for suits, dresses, or anything else.

Business casual is always a pretty safe bet if youre unsure!

Remember: Its cold pretty much year-round up there in the Great Lakes, so regardless of your attire, you may want to pack an extra jacket or sweater!

Checklist For Meeting With Recruiters

The first step after researching online about the military if you are still considering joining is to go see a recruiter. Simply google to find the closest one to you for whatever branch you are considering. When you meet be sure to have a list of questions to ask and take notes during your conversation. Its simply a meeting to get more information. Below is a list of things to ask when meeting with the National Guard, however most of these questions are relevant to any recruiter meeting. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I talked to my first recruiter. Hopefully this list will keep you talking about the right things and get you the most relevant information.

Start by knowing that every recruiters job is to get people to enlist. They have certain numbers to hit. Just know this and make sure everything you are promised is in your contract. Most recruiters are good people, but I have heard a few bad stories. Ill say it again, during your meeting with recruiters, ask a bunch of questions and take notes on everything so you can think about this big decision in private or with close friends/family and have all of the information you need.

The Rank Of Seaman Sounds Worse When Its Yours

Some rates in the Navy arent even called seamen when they get to the rank of E-3 so thats a plus. Corpsman who are E-3s are referred to as Hospitalman while Seabees are called constructionmen, so we luck out.

Other ranks dont have that privilege. It can be embarrassing saying, Seaman Smith, reporting for duty.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

Do Soldiers Exercise Everyday

Much of Army physical training takes place not in a well-equipped gym but in the great outdoors, so many of the exercises regularly performed by soldiers use nothing more than bodyweight for resistance. This means that these exercises can be performed anywhere, at any time and, in many cases, on a daily basis…. continue reading

You Will Be Expected To Kill

There is a flip side to the above topic. As I said, America has real enemies, and you, as a member of the military, will be expected to kill those enemies. As a soldier, you’re not a diplomat. It’s not your job to talk to people or reason with them.

Whether it’s prepping ordinance for use in combat, or taking part in small arms gun battles, you’re not trying to wound your enemy, you are trying to kill him. Let that sink in for a moment. It will be your job to take lives. While you may have a non-combat job, the enemy doesn’t care about that, and they will shoot at lawyers and cooks the same as they will an infantryman. That’s why everyone who joins the military, regardless of job, gets taught to shoot and how to fight.

Pro: Career Opportunities After Service

The Navy equips Sailors with a lot of specialized skills and training, which can be used to find rewarding careers after the military.

Those with an active security clearance at the time of separating from the service are able to use that as a bargaining tool with potential employers to get higher pay or added benefits, since the new employer will not need to pay for the extensive background investigation that is needed with a new clearance.

The Constitution No Longer Applies To You

Once you enlist, the constitution no longer applies to you. While serving, you fall under the jurisdiction of the U.C.M.J. . While for the most part you will enjoy most of the same basic rights, some big differences are:

  • No free speech/press/assembly in the military.
  • You still have freedom of religion, but the availability of religious personnel may not suit your needs.
  • You have no right to privacy .
  • You have no right to protection from unreasonable search.

There are a few other differences, and for most part you should never really notice a difference. Just be aware that there is a difference and that some things that are not crimes for civilians are crimes for military personnel .

How To Contact Someone During Basic Training

When a recruit arrives on day one, personal items, such as cell phones, are taken away and stored locally. That means you will not be able to contact your recruit via their mobile device. You can, however, send your recruit a letter to the address that corresponds to the correct ship, which can be found here.

The mailing address should look like this:

If there is an emergency and you must contact your recruit immediately, there are avenues for you to do so. You will have to get in touch with the American Red Cross, as they can quickly send communication of emergency events to anywhere in the world, including ships.

To make sure your message is sent promptly and correctly, youll need to provide the following information about the recruit when you call the Red Cross:

  • Their full name
