What To Know Before Joining The Military

Where Does Basic Training Take Place

For all full-time regular force candidates, basic training takes place at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

All part-time candidates joining their local Primary Reserve unit will undergo similar basic training objectives. Reserve units will conduct their Basic Training either at the local reserve unit location or at a Canadian Armed Forces training centre. Locations vary depending on units. Talk to a Primary Reserve unit recruiter for more information on their Basic Training program.

Whats The Best Way To Get Into The Military

Because youll spend more time serving in the military after graduation than youll spend at a service academy, its best to first pick the military branch that aligns best with your own goals and interestsArmy, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guardand then seek an appointment to the school that feeds officers into that branch.

Your Recruiter Really Wants You To Sign

If you are considering joining the Army, the first thing you must realize is that the recruiter wants you to sign up regardless. The recruiter isnt acting in your best interest and will attempt to get you signed up as quickly as possible and will tell you whatever they can in order to accomplish that goal. Recruiters are held to quotas, which they must meet and theres a good deal of pride on the part of the recruiter whos able to sign up a large number of people. There are exceptions to this, of course. If you arent good Army material for medical, psychological, or mental reasons, then the recruiter will likely tell you that you just arent suitable. However, if you are only out of shape physically or have little or no job experience, the recruiter can work with that and prepare you for the Army.

What Should Women And Lgbtq People Know

What You Should Know Before You Join The Military !!

In addition to the dangers of war, women experience a special threat: about 1/3rd of all females in the military are sexually assaulted, twice the rate for civilians . And when assaults are reported, the rate of prosecution is very low, meaning the victims often must continue working in a hostile workplace. These problems still exist despite many years of promises to do something about them.

While the policy that banned LGBTQ people from the military has been dropped, wide-ranging incidents of harassment and physical and sexual assaults based on sexual orientation have continued and will not simply end with a rule change.

What Are Some Things I Should Know About Military Life

Do you enjoy having someone constantly telling you what to do and how to do it? If not, you may have a hard time with military life. The military places numerous restrictions on personal behavior that would not be acceptable in civilian society. Military members are subject to military law 24 hours a day even when off duty and off base until the end of their term. Disobedience in the military can result in court-martial, prison, or the lifetime problem of a bad discharge.

If you cant finish your first enlistment term, you could lose all or part of the education and other benefits you were promised and be forced to pay back any bonus you received. Historically, about one-third of new recruits in all the combined military branches do not finish their first term. 40% of Army recruits dont .

Furthermore, section C.9.b of the enlistment agreement says your status, pay, benefits and responsibilities in the military can change without warning and REGARDLESS of any promises in your agreement! And the military has the right to keep you past your discharge date. In the eight years after Sept. 11, 2001, 186,000 people were kept from leaving the military when their terms were up

Joining the Canadian Armed Forces

Enlistment In The Armed Forces Is A Very Important Decision

Before enlisting, think carefully about what it means to be a soldier for eight years. Every member of the military, from the medic to the mechanic, is trained to fight and to kill, and the ongoing conflicts prove that fighting and killing can begin very suddenly. You may enlist to get job training or money for college, but eventually you may be faced with war. You owe it to yourself to think seriously about when you believe it is justified to kill another person.

Many of the details about enlistment are not well explained to people considering joining the military. Recruits may not understand the specifics of the enlistment agreement, the possibility of recruiter fraud, the limitations of college funding available through the military, and the problems faced by veterans when they leave the armed forces. It is important to learn all you can before you join. Remember that if you enlist, and decide you dont like it, you cannot quit.

How Long Will I Be Away From Home

Sailors rotate between sea and shore duty. You may spend three years assigned to a ships command and then rotate to serve three more years at a shore command. You will not be at sea during your entire Navy career. During your sea tour, you may live off-base nearby, but must be available to travel with the ship for deployments or training.

A typical sea deployment on a Navy ship can last anywhere from six to nine months. Ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months. In preparation for deployment, Sailors should be prepared to go to sea for 10 to 14 days each month for training.

Getting Ready To Train

An excellent way to determine your fitness level is to undergo a fitness appraisal.

Talk to your doctor before starting a fitness routine or appraisal, particularly if you have a heart condition, feel chest pain, lose your balance or consciousness, have a bone or joint problem, or take drugs for a blood pressure or heart condition. Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

What To Do/know Before Joining The Army:

1. Consider Cutting Your Hair

If you don’t cut your hair, you will need to keep it in a tight bun.

My hair was long, and I wasn’t about to fix my hair up in a bun every day. With the intense training, I would have to fix my hair all of the time, especially because drill sergeants are sticklers about soldier representation.

A soldier also told me that some of the female soldiers he knew got moldy hair. When I started training, I could see how that was possible. The females who didn’t cut their hair always had to have it up in a bun. As soon as they were done with showers, they’d basically have to throw their hair back into a bun. Sometimes there wasn’t much time to take showers, so then the drill sergeants were thoughtful enough to take us training in the rain. After training in the mud, we would all go campingagain, in the rain. Under those conditions, it’d be easy for a bit of mold to cultivate in a knot of hair.

One of my first preparations for BCT was chopping off all of my hair!

I was amazed by how many people were mad at me for shearing off my “crowning glory.”

In the end, it was a very good thing that I cut my hair, though it made me sad to lose whatever cuteness my long hair gave me.

Life As A Female Soldier In Pre

Before I joined the United States Army, I pored through the internet looking for any kind of information that could help me. I wanted so badly to know what it was like to be in the Army. I knew what it was like for the soldiers I’d already met, but none of them were females like me. Let’s face it: There is a difference between males and females in the military, and I wanted to know that difference. Unfortunately I never found any helpful information, so I up and joined the U.S. Army and experienced it myself. Hopefully this piece will be of help to other women considering joining the Army.

Is College Money Free And Guaranteed

What you need to know before joining the military?!

Recruiters might promise that youll get to go to college free, but its not free you must work for it! And the benefits will not be guaranteed.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill offers more money than in the past to those who qualify, and it allows military members to transfer unused financial aid to other family members, but there are conditions and possible problems you should know about. For example:

  • People must enlist for a total of 10 years to transfer unused college benefits to family members.
  • People who receive a less than fully honorable discharge lose all GI Bill benefits. This includes general discharges, which are often given for minor problems with military duties.
  • Those who leave the military early, as one in three do, may get reduced or no benefits.
  • Veterans who wish to attend college outside the state where they live may only get a small part of their total tuition covered. In 2015 the average extra tuition cost at a public four-year college was $15,650/year for nonresidents .

If you need money for college, there are many other sources of aid to look at, including grants and scholarships that are TRULY free. Colleges can help you find aid, and it pays to investigate the many alternatives yourself before signing away eight years of your life to the military. If you go straight to college, instead of the military, you can start earning the higher wages of a college graduate much sooner.

Military Careers Can Be Rewarding For Women Too As Long As They Know What To Expect

The point of this piece isnt to tell women they should stay out of combat or avoid the military. That said, since there are risks unique to female members of service, it would be unfair to encourage them to enlist without offering full transparency.

Some military roles can increase the risk of pelvic floor and musculoskeletal injuries, and sexual harassment and assault is an issue that is far from solved, but many women also climb the ranks proudly without a hitch. Now you know the risks. If you still feel a combat role is where you belong, dont let any statistic hold you back.
