DAY ONE | Army Basic Training | What To Expect

I bought this book directly from the author after reading his Guidebook to help me prepare for boot camp. It was definitely worth it. Theres lots of real helpful info in both books, and the Workbook had a lot of extra content, like the multiple choice questions and things on the authors website. . There is a small problem with some of the flashcards in the book. The words dont match up correctly on the front and back when cut out. An obvious printing error, and not the authors fault. I was not going to cut out the phonetic alphabet cards anyway, so I just used index cards and made my own. If you want to use the cards in the book, I guess you could just write the answer on them. No big deal and it does not detract from all the great info inside this book. Mandatory reading, no exception.

United States Army Basic Training

United States Army Basic Combat Training is the recruit training program of the United States Army, for service in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, or the Army National Guard.

Some trainees attend Basic Combat Training along with their Advanced Individualized Training at one place, referred to as One Station Unit Training . A United States Army infantry recruit should expect a more intense, physically demanding basic training located at Fort Benning, Georgia through One Station Unit Training program that is 22 weeks in duration.

Other occupations also learn basic warrior tasks and skills and small unit tactics, but tend to focus on more of a balanced approach. These trainees receive basic combat training at different installations including Fort Jackson, South Carolina Fort Sill, Oklahoma or Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

BasicTraining is designed to be highly intense and challenging. The challenge comes as much from the difficulty of physical training as it does from the psychological adjustment to an unfamiliar way of life. Initial Entry Training is divided into two parts: Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training .

Getting to Fort Benning is a pretty easy trip, no matter where youre coming from. I-185 runs right by the post and plenty of other major highways in the area make any trip here or away a simple drive.

  • Merge onto I-85 South/Columbus/Montgomery.
  • Take exit 21 to merge onto I-185 South toward Columbus.

  • Get on Interstate 95 South toward Savannah.
  • Take exit 99B to merge onto I-16 West toward Macon.
  • Exit left to merge onto I-75 South toward Valdosta.
  • Take exit 149 onto GA-49 toward Byron, Fort Valley, and keep right toward Byron, Fort Valley.
  • Turn right onto GA-49 and continue onto Highway 96 before continuing onto Columbus Highway.
  • Keep going to follow I-185 South where youll reach Fort Benning at the end.
  • From Montgomery :
  • Turn onto the Selma-Mobile Highway and merge onto I-65 North.
  • Take exit 171 to merge onto I-85 North toward Atlanta.
  • Take exit 62 on US-431/US-280 toward Phenix City.
  • Turn right onto Columbus Parkway toward Phenix City.
  • Turn left to merge onto US-80 East toward I-185.
  • Take the ramp for I-185 South and follow that until the end where youll reach Fort Benning.

    What To Expect In Basic Training

    While the Army benefits are great, not everything is sunshine and rainbows in the Army especially in basic training. You need to know what to expect in basic training in order to prepare yourself and decide if the Army is right for you. Below are some things that you can expect from Army basic training.

    Army Basic Training Phase : Red Phase


    Shakedown: When you get off the bus from Reception Battalion, you’ll be told to line up your bag in a certain way to see whether you can follow instructions. Then you’ll be ordered to empty your bag. If any contraband falls out, it will be your first opportunity to see a drill sergeant go ballistic.

    Training: The goal of your Phase 1 training is to begin your transformation from a confused volunteer to a confident soldier. During Red Phase , you’ll learn the fundamentals of soldiering, including Army heritage and the seven core Army values. Most of your classroom training will occur during this time. You’ll also undergo the Army Physical Fitness Test to assess your physical abilities. You’ll have several of these tests along the way to be sure you’re getting in the best possible shape.

    During these first three weeks, you’ll get a thorough introduction to the following:

    • The Army‘s core values, traditions and ethics
    • Assembling, disassembling and caring for your M16
    • The Nuclear-Biological-Chemical chamber
    • Security and crowd dispersion discipline
    • Combatives: hand-to-hand combat and guerrilla exercises
    • Barracks inspections
    • Running, tactical daylight marches and fitness training

    Obviously, this is an intense training schedule, geared toward reinforcing the principles of discipline and teamwork. From here, you’ll look forward to moving toward the rifle range to learn some exciting — and very useful — skills.

    Weapons And Combat Training Time

    During the weeks 4-6, you will spend most of your time on various ranges. You will start with basic M4 shooting , and move on to farther targets, pop-up targets, grenades, grenade launchers, and more. You will be surprised at how many different ranges one Army post has.

    During the 5th week, you will get practice using bayonets and an introduction to anti-tank weapons and other heavy weapons. Also, you will get practice negotiating the obstacle course. You will also get to run the obstacle course carrying your new friend . You and your Battle Buddy will also be expected to work as a “team.”

    Sometime during the 6th week, you will notice that the Drill Sergeants aren’t yelling as much as they used to. In fact, at times, they seem almost human. You will continue daily PT, as well as practice basic drill and ceremonies. By now, you should be able to shoot straight and navigate basic combat obstacles.

    Weeks One Through Three Phase 1 Red Phase

    In this adaptation phase, youll learn the fundamentals, traditions and ethics of what it means to be a soldier. You will learn how to comport yourself, how to address leadership and will be expected to recite the Warrior Ethos and the Soldiers Creed.

    Youll receive briefings on basic first aid and sexual harassment and sexual assault awareness and prevention programs.

    This phase includes intense physical training as well as road marches and formation marches. Youll be taking the Army Combat Fitness Test, which will challenge you on a strength deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release pushups, a sprint/drag/carry, leg tuck and 2-mile run.

    An introduction to Chemical Radioactive Biological and Nuclear readiness also occurs during this phase. At the end of these three weeks, youll receive an Army Unit Patch to be worn on the left shoulder of your uniform.

    Theres Ugly Then Theres Army Ugly We Are All Army Ugly

    No matter how handsome you are, its hard to rock the haircuts, glasses, and tan lines the Army gives you. Males have to have their heads buzzed. All soldiers requiring corrective lenses are issued basic training glasses, generally referred to as birth control glasses. And, after months in the sun in physical training uniforms, combat uniforms, and berets, graduating soldiers have deep tan lines around their wrists and across their foreheads.

    What Is ARMY BASIC TRAINING Like In 2021? (What To Expect!)

    As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

    • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
    • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
    • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

    Your Loved One Will Get One Phone Call

    Upon arrival at basic training, your loved one will be able to call you for just a few minutes. Everyone in their in-processing group will be making this same call, so it truly will only be a very brief call.

    On the date that you anticipate your loved one will be arriving at boot camp, have your phone handy and be ready to pick up unknown numbers. Todays technology makes getting this call easier. In the past, before cell phones, families would need to wait by their house phone for the call.

    During the very brief call, your loved one will be sharing that they have arrived safely. Thats it. Its not the time to pass the phone around to every family member. Acknowledge their arrival, send your love, and wish them luck.

    Your First Steps To Becoming A Soldier

    Basic Combat Training, often known as boot camp, is your introduction to Army service, and where you will learn the traditions, tactics and methods of becoming a Soldier. During Basic, youll learn how to work as a member of a team to accomplish tasks. Youll learn discipline, including proper dress, marching, and grooming standards. Most importantly, youll be instilled with the Seven Core Army Values and the Soldier Creed. Basic Combat Training comes in three phases and lasts about ten weeks, depending on your military occupational specialty . After you graduate from basic training, you will undergo two additional phases of training, known as Advanced Individual Training, where you will learn the job skills required of your MOS.

    Basic Training Army: What to expect (Part I)

    The Visitor Center processes visitors who have been pre-sponsored by post personnel. Those who havent been pre-sponsored should expect lengthy delays or should arrange to have their sponsor meet them at the gate. The Lindsey Creek Visitor Control Center is open 24/7, including holidays, and is on Lindsey Creek Parkway. The Contractor Visitor Control Center is on 8th Division Road in Harmony Church and is open 0600 to 1400 Monday through Friday. The CVCC is closed nights, weekends, and holidays.     Army Basic Training Requirements

    You wouldnt show up for your drivers license test without being able to parallel park, right? Then hopefully you figured out that building up your physical strength before you step into formation for the first time is probably a wise move. You can expect those standards to be tested during Week Zero, also known as Reception Battalion. If you dont pass this initial test, youll be placed in the fitness training company for additional instruction. Youll have two chances per week to pass the test.

    Youll be tested in other physical ways during your reception week too, but there isnt a lot of studying you can do for vision, hearing and blood exams, among others. However, being in the best physical shape you can before basic even starts will be an advantage youll appreciate from Day 1.

    Not Like A Civilian Job

    Regardless of what your recruiter told you, being a member of the United States Armed Forces is not just like having a civilian job. In the military, there will always be someone telling you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it — and you’ve got to do it. Sometimes they’ll tell you to do something that you don’t want to do, or tell you in a way that makes you angry.

    Failing to do it is not an option. The willful disobeying of a lawful order won’t just get you “fired,” as it would in a civilian occupation. It can get you sent to jail.

    In the military, you’ll work the hours you are told to work. You’ll work “overtime” with no additional pay. You’ll do the tasks you’re assigned to do . You’ll live where you’re told to live, and you’ll deploy where and when you’re told to deploy.

    If you’re not absolutely willing to make these sacrifices, then you might want to reconsider enlisting.

    How Long Is Army Basic Training
