Prior Service + Prior Military Commitments

Those with prior service or prior military commitments can apply to be military medical students, residents or physicians, although some individuals may need to fill out extra applications. For example, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets must be approved for an educational delay because of their existing military commitments before they apply to HPSP or USU. Likewise, cadets and midshipmen in Service academies and ROTC must be approved by their respective Service before accepting admission to medical school.

If you are an active-duty service member, you must receive permission from your Personnel Command to leave your current assignment and apply to medical school and scholarship programs. In that case, any preexisting service obligation for your military education and training will be added to any obligation related to your participation in a medical scholarship program.

The Long Steep Hill To Overcoming The Yips

Steve Blass developed Steve Blass disease – what’s known today as the “yips” – at the height of his powers in 1973. The worst part was the silence.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ ace, about to enter his ninth season in the majors, had just finished second in National League Cy Young voting. But in the spring of 1973, he lost the ability to throw a baseball across the plate. That season, he walked 84 batters in 88 innings, and led the NL with 12 hit batters.

On the road, he was heckled. But at home, at Three Rivers Stadium, the sound was different. When it was clear the issue wasn’t going to be easily remedied, the fans would “go silent,” he recalled.

“They were all rooting so hard for me and that was the toughest thing of all,” Blass, now 80, told theScore. “They didn’t boo me.”

Blass never thought about mechanics, the muscle memory he’d built. Blass was always an “instinctive” pitcher, he said. But his instincts abandoned him at the age of 31.

He tried everything. He worked with sports psychologists at a time when it was taboo. He tried hypnosis and visualization techniques, too. Nothing worked.

His despair accumulated and “toward the end,” as he describes it, he couldn’t sleep. He would go out to the back patio of his suburban home in the rolling south hills of Pittsburgh and sit alone. More silence, save for cicadas chirping. It was a lonely fight. No one understood it, including Blass.

U.S. Navy Careers: How You Can Serve?

It will come as no surprise that certain roles, also known as military occupational specialties are more suited to certain types of intelligence than others, and just because someone might struggle with Mechanical Comprehension, theres no reason they couldnt excel in Arithmetic Reasoning and Math Knowledge.

Military occupational specialties are a reflection of the roles best suited to an individual joining the military, and each specialty requires a specific combination of ASVAB scores. Each job in the military fits into a category, and each category has a combination of ASVAB tests that make up the required score.

The role of Combat Engineer, for example, is in the Combat category, and requires strong scores in Arithmetic Reasoning , Coding Speed , Auto and Shop Information , and Mechanical Comprehension .

Ammunitions Specialists, however, need to do well in the Skilled Technical category, and will excel in General Science , Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension , Mathematics Knowledge , and Mechanical Comprehension .

There are a lot of specialties available for those starting a career in the military, and each has its own minimum score for the separate parts of the ASVAB test. For a full list of roles and requirements, see the US Military MOS Database. In most cases, a higher AFQT score will mean more MOS options, but certain roles require exceptional scores in specific tests.
