Service academies can be used to refer to all of the academies collectively. While they are often referred to as military academies, only the Military Academy, Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy are operated by the Department of Defense. The Coast Guard Academy is operated by the Department of Homeland Security, and the Merchant Marine Academy is operated by the Department of Transportation. Students enrolled at USMA, USNA, USAFA, and USCGA are considered to be on active duty for training in the United States Armed Forces from the day they enter the Academy, with the rank of cadet or midshipman, and subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Students enrolled at USMMA serve in the US Navy reserve, with the rank of midshipman and are only subject to the UCMJ while actively training with the US military on Navy orders.

The French have campaigned across the globe and their standard of military leadership has allowed the French to establish itself as recognized military power.
Leaders, however, have to be trained and École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr has been performing this service since it was founded in 1803 by Napoleon Bonaparte. Located at Brittany, France, the school is considered to be Frances premier military academy. This can be summed up in the schools motto of they study to vanquish. Really, you just have to love the French.
Unlike many post-secondary military institutions, ESM does not offer undergraduate degrees. Instead, graduates of the school are awarded a Master of Arts or Master of Science degree. Students who are admitted to ESM have completed an undergraduate degree course beforehand, or graduated from a Grande École . This is in addition to a competitive series of aptitude tests, physical examinations, and thorough interviews.
While at the school, students can expect the norm when it comes to a regimented, military-styled environment. The French have quite the fondness for parade, and cadets can expect plenty of marching in full regalia. To their credit, they look awesome doing it.

Youll primarily be evaluated by your high school academic performance, test scores, and extracurricular achievement.
The service academies are fond of students who have pursued leadership positions and shown a commitment to their communities. Also, they appreciate students who have excelled athletically and have obtained awards and leadership positions on their sports teams.
The requirements listed below are common to most service academies. Here are the admission requirements.
- Transcript, test scores like SAT/ACT, recommendations, and college essay

Learn About The Armed Forces Service Academies
The service academies annually award the biggest scholarships in the country. Each scholarship consists of a four-year education, room and board, pay, exclusive benefits and training. But remember it can be quite grueling and will require you to be very disciplined and dedicated.
Here are 10 tips to give you an edge in getting into one of these elite institutions:
1. Get the grades. Face it, you have to be among the best to be a cadet. Ninety percent of cadets were in the top 20% of their class, but the academies want well-rounded people. Good grades are a starting point, not the finish line.
2. Practice testing. The ACT and SAT are critical. Find out what scores you need at the websites below. Keep testing until you score high enough to be above the average.
3. Be an athlete. Not everyone is an intercollegiate athlete, but most cadets play intramural sports, face fitness tests and undergo strenuous physical training.
4. Be a leader. The academies are looking for leaders. Participation in clubs and extracurriculars is not enough. Become a club officer or class officer. Work hard to earn school, athletic and community awards. Awards separate you from the pack.
5. Be involved in the community. Leaders care. Show you care by routinely volunteering or working in community programs.
8. Go for more than one. Congressional representatives and senators have a limited number of nominations for each academy. By considering all four academies, you increase your chances of getting in.

For Brits who don’t want to go into the Air Force, this military academy is another prestigious choice. Instead, they embark on a rigorous training program to prepare them for leadership as an officer. The school has a long and storied history, and dozens of princes, sheiks, and government leaders have gone through the training programs there, including author Ian Fleming and Prince Harry.

What Are The Downfalls Of A Military School For Troubled Teens
While different military schools provide their own systems, programs, and education are typically not individualised. There is typically no assessment, recognition, or accommodation for students with diagnosed disorders, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, Aspergers, etc. All youth get the same programming and same reward or consequence system. Just like the military, this is appealing to some parents.
There is typically no treatment specifically for students with any challenges or problems. Therefore, some students continue to suffer and decline, even with the structure. The focus in military schools is discipline, which appeals to us as parents. Students, however, are not necessarily learning how to manage their emotions and behaviours. Nor do they think responsibly and independently.
We provide an alternative to the military school experience. Furthermore, many teens sink further into depression or social isolation as a result of never being able to earn rewards at military schools and just accumulating infractions, which leaves them out of fun activities and trips that other students were earning. Remember military schools are NOT just for problematic teens. Therefore, many teens fall behind as the other kids have success. Of course, some teens do well at military school. However, assessing and knowing which will and which will not is difficult.
