What To Expect in the ARMY: ARMY HEIGHT & WEIGHT STANDARDS (AR 600-9)

Below is the Army‘s weight minimum and maximum allowable for recruits to enlist. It is broken down by height and then further into age groups.

Height will be measured in stocking feet on a flat surface with the chin parallel to the floor. The body should be straight but not rigid, similar to the position of attention.

The measurement will be rounded to the nearest inch with the following guidelines: if the height fraction is less than a half-inch, round down. If the height fraction is a half-inch or greater, round up.

Weight will be measured and recorded to the nearest pound. Height and weight will be taken officially at the Military Entrance Processing Station .

It is very important to be over your minimum or under your maximum. Not meeting either one probably will stop you from enlisting or, even worse, prevent you from going to basic training.

Meeting The Weight And Body

The past decade has brought considerable progress in developing new technologies and scientifically sound methods of assessing body fat and setting appropriate weight and body-fat standards in support of the military’s body composition, fitness, and readiness goals. DOD-wide uniformity in the use of these methodologies and standards is being sought to promote maximum objectivity and fairness to service members across the four services. As discussed earlier, a revised DOD Instruction has been issued that presents new DOD standards for maximum weight-for-heights corresponding to a minimum BMI of 25 and a maximum BMI of 27.5 . In addition, this policy also mandates the implementation of a single circumferential equation to estimate percent body fat for men and one for women to be used by all the services.

The weight and body-fat standards of the military services were predicated on the need for the highest level of physical performance in adverse environments, and to a lesser degree on the image that the individual may convey of the military. These standards theoretically take precedent even when individuals demonstrate an ability to perform their assigned tasks in an exceptional manner.

Is It Possible For An Overweight Person Join To The Armed Forces

Short answer: Sometimes.

If an applicants weight exceeds the maximum limit set by the Armed Forces, MEPS officials can choose to calculate their body fat percentage. Depending on the number, that result may influence the admission of an otherwise overweight applicant.

On the other hand, some applicants can get a weight exemption. This allows overweight individuals to enlist and lose weight during core training. In contrast, the height requirement only has exemptions for minors that could actually grow taller during training.

How Are Weight And Height Measurements Taken

Army recruits take official weight and height measurements to determine a candidates physical condition.

This is a compulsory part of the physical exam of the Military Entrance Processing Station that every candidate must follow and pass before being sworn in as a new recruit.

Both height and weight measurements are rounded up or down to the nearest whole digit.

The rounding off depends on whether it is more or less than .5lb or inch. For example, if your weight is 119.6lbs, the official weight that will be noted down will be 120lbs.

If your weight goes over the required maximum limit, then the MEPS officials are able to carry out body fat percentage tests before letting you continue to be a recruit.

These are the requirements that they must meet if they want to enlist in the army. The information is broken down into two categories: height and weight.

Height Requirements

The U.S military has specific height range standards that all recruits have to fall in.

The reason why they have such a strict height range requirement is that the military doesnt have a flexible budget or time to tailor-make customized uniforms and equipment for officers outside the set of that height range.

In addition, the tanks, shipboard, and airplane duties will be too hard to conduct if someone doesnt meet the set of height standards. Therefore, if you fall outside this range, you will be rejected.

How To Lose It Correctly

Military Monday: Army Height Weight Standards || Am I To Over Weight To Join The U.S. Army #Army

Losing weight is a fairly simple process. You have to take in fewer calories than you burn during the day. Most people burn roughly 2,000 calories a day, so to maintain weight, a normal person would aim to consume about 1,850 calories a day. I generally aim for less calories than needed, simply because I know that I am bad about “secret calories,” or consuming calories without realizing.

It’s generally accepted that one pound of weight is about 3,500 calories. So to lose a pound, you would need a negative amount of 3,500 calories. To lose weight healthily, you should never consume less than 1,000 calories in a day.

To see the time that it would take you to lose the amount, multiply the number of pounds that you need to lose times 3,500. Then figure out your caloric goal. For example are you aiming for 1,500 calories a day? Then factor in the amount of exercise that you plan to do daily .

Depending on your current metabolism, if you cut your calories down to 1,500 a day and run/walk/jog five miles a day, then you will lose about two pounds a week. At first, you may lose slightly more, so as your body adjusts, you may need to add more exercise or eat slightly less.

If you cut your daily intake to 1,000 and continue to run 5 miles a day, then you should be losing about a pound every two days. I do not suggest eating less than 1,000 calories a day, especially if you plan to exercise vigorously.

Are There Any Growth Allowances Given

Given that you cant control your height and that someone can be recruited into the Army as early as 17 years old, there have been some cases of people being allowed to stay in the military despite exceeding the height requirements.

For example, the famous basketball player and 2-time Olympic gold medal winner David Robinson first entered the US Navy when he was 80 inches tall, just one inch over the Navys height restriction at that time of 80 inches. However, he was granted an allowance due to the assumption that he wouldnt grow much more. That turned out to be a huge miscalculation as Robinson ended up growing to around 85 inches tall, meaning he well-exceeded the height standard. Rather than being discharged, he was able to serve active duty while growing his basketball career and later served in the Naval Reserves helping with recruitment and campaigning.

While Robinson still had some active part in the Navy, his height prevented him from later serving on any US navy ships. Better yet, this is unlikely to happen nowadays, and there are not many known cases of exceptions being given to the height restrictions. Height limits, therefore, are something to be aware of when planning on joining the US military.

Plan In Train To Reduce Limit From Almost 10 Stone As Part Of Drive To Attract More Trainees

A minimum weight requirement of nearly 10 stone on the ejector seats in planes used to train Irish Air Corps members is to be changed after being identified as one of the main barriers to women joining its ranks as pilots.

There is currently just one woman among the roughly 100 trainee and active pilots in the Air Corps and only three female military pilots have qualified since women were first allowed to join as officers in 1980.

All trainee Air Corps pilots are taught to fly on the PC-9 aircraft, a single-engine, two-person trainer plane equipped with ejector seats in case of emergency. For years the minimum weight requirements for the aircrafts ejector seat was 63kg or 70kg with a full equipment load.

Any pilots lighter than this faced a risk of serious injury if they have to eject due to the strength of the ejection mechanism.

In response the Air Corps is to work with the seats manufacturer, the UK based firm Martin-Baker, to lower the weight requirements over the coming year.

Preparing Your Body Before Serving

Improving your CR and muscle stamina will have a positive impact on your body’s composition and will result in less fat. Excessive body fat detracts from the other fitness components, reduces performance, and negatively affects your health. But a person’s body fat depends on many factors, including body type, and you should not compare your body fat to someone else’s.

Good body composition is best gained through proper diet and exercise. Examples of poor body composition are underdeveloped muscle groups, or excessive body fat. Poor body composition causes problems for the Army and the individual Soldier. For example, Soldiers with inadequate muscle development cannot perform as well as those with proper development. When a Soldier is overweight, his or her physical ability to perform declines and the risk of developing disease and injury increases. Also, Soldiers with high percentages of body fat often have lower APFT scores than those with lower percentages. Poor body composition, especially obesity, has a negative effect on appearance, self-esteem, and negatively influences attitude and morale. Continue to monitor your height and weight standards and overall body composition through our Army BMI calculator above and set goals for bettering muscle development. You can read more about improving your body composition with exercise and preparing for the APFT here.

Why Are Their Height Limits

The Army: Height And Weight For The Army

There are height restrictions in the army quite simply because the Army doesnt have an unlimited budget or time to make custom-made uniforms for each recruit that falls outside the height range. Furthermore, in the air force and navy, the jobs required will be challenging to carry out should someone fall outside the height limit, such as when working in tanks and airplanes.
