Many Days I Contemplated Suicide

Navy Women Redefined

Florence Shmorgoner, Marine Corps, 2014-Present

In 2015, I was sexually assaulted, and I waited until 2017 to report it because I was scared that I would not be believed or, worse, that I would be deemed a troublemaker in my platoon. It took about a year for the whole process to end. I was fortunate enough to go to counseling and see a psychologist and was found to have depression, anxiety disorder and PTSD all stemming from the assault. I struggled with my self-worth more than I would like to admit. Many days, I contemplated suicide. Not because I felt like a burden but because the pain I felt every day was nearly unbearable. To this day, I still have nightmares of the assault. But I have found peace, which I have learned is all that matters.

WASHINGTON For the first time, a female sailor has successfully completed the grueling 37-week training course to become a Naval Special Warfare combatant-craft crewman the boat operators who transport Navy SEALs and conduct their own classified missions at sea.

Navy officials said they would not identify the woman or provide more details on her a routine military policy for special operations forces. She was one of 17 sailors to graduate and receive their pins on Thursday. She is also the first of 18 women who have tried out for a job as a SWCC or a SEAL to succeed.

The sailor’s graduation marks just the latest inroad that women have made into some of the military’s most difficult and competitive commando jobs just five years after all combat posts were opened to them. She will now head to one of Naval Special Warfares three special boat teams.

Being Beautiful And A Soldier

Staff Sgt. San Juanita Escobar, Texas Army National Guard, 2007-Present

I am currently Mrs. Texas Galaxy. When I was a National Guard recruiter, I came across many young women who said they couldnt join because they were too girlie. So I started to compete in beauty pageants again to prove that you can still be and feel beautiful and follow any career path you want.

Sailor Becomes First Woman To Complete Navy Special Warfare Training

For the first time in the U.S. Navy’s history, a female sailor has successfully completed the grueling Naval Special Warfare training, the Navy announced this week.

The woman was one of 17 candidates to successfully finish the intense 37-week “assessment and selection” process to become a Naval Special Warfare combatant-craft crewman . She earned her pins and graduated on Thursday.

The Navy did not identify the female graduate a standard military policy for special operations forces.

The Navy said that only about 35% of candidates for the crew make it to graduation. Their training, similar to that of SEALs, focuses on covert missions, in addition to training in weapons, navigation, radio communication, first aid, engineering, parachuting and special operations tactics.

The training begins with the Navy’s recruit boot camp, followed by a two-month preparatory course, a three-week orientation at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, California and seven weeks of physical conditioning and learning navigation and water skills. The program culminates in a 72-hour event called “The Tour,” which tests candidates’ physical capabilities and marks the most frequent point of failure in the training, according to the Associated Press.

According to Naval Special Warfare, approximately 300 sailors attempt the SWCC course each year, and around 70 finish it. There are around 800 people in the force.

Whats Your Go To Self

What U.S. naval life is really like

I started to put down the TV remote and began opening up books. Reading for about 30-45 minutes about a topic I enjoy helps me relax and learn at the same time. Whether I am reading a personal development guide, or a drama-filled fiction story, its a great tool for me to get my creative juices flowing, pick up some new ideas, and relaxall while drinking a glass of wine, of course!

Why To Actually Hate The Navy

Every service tries to imitate the Marine Corps when it comes to celebrating its birthday, and the Navys history makes this in many ways the biggest joke . While the Navy uses October 13, 1775 as the birth date, they leave out the fact that the first version of the U.S. Navy was dismantled completely after the Revolutionary War because the ragtag bunch of vessels they managed to assemble on the fly did little to protect ports or disrupt the British in any way.

And this anti-Navy sentiment in and around DC lasted a while after that. Thomas Jefferson hated the idea of a standing Navy and few in Congress thought any differently about it. It wasnt until early Navy badass Stephen Decatur decided to take a couple of ships to Tripoli to raise some Yankee hell against the Barbary Pirates. His successes made lawmakers take notice and actually warm to the idea of a standing Navy, and one with an over-the-horizon outlook.

So the real birth date of the Navy would be somewhere around 1810 when Decatur took the USS United States up and down the east coast to show the American public what they had in terms of seagoing capability.

Hate SAPR training and the CYA leadership atmosphere youre currently serving under? Blame the Navy.

So, regardless of your branch, if you feel like youre serving in a nanny state, blame the Navy.

Because they wrecked most of what was cool about the band Godsmack and made them corporate sellouts.

Side Effects Can Take Years To Show Up

It’s possible that even women who leave the military feeling healthy will feel the consequences of hard, physical labor later in life.

Some female veterans have reported issues like osteoporosis, muscle atrophy, low endurance and infertility, which they believe to be the result of their time in the military.

In Puerto Rico I Met A Woman Who Gave Birth During The Hurricane

After Hurricane Maria, I was deployed to do recovery operations in eastern and central Puerto Rico. The amazing resilience of the Puerto Rican people couldnt compare to anything I had ever seen before. There was a woman about my age with a very young baby. I asked her how old she was, and she said the infant was about 4 weeks old meaning she had been born either during or in the days after the hurricane. I can’t imagine having a baby without a doctor, running water or electricity. But there she was, showing me her beautiful baby girl.

I Remember The Feeling Of Victory When I Made It Through The Day

What is the navy officer test like? Tips to pass the OAR!

Capt. Helen Perry, Army, 2011-16 Army Reserve, 2016-Present

I remember dropping my phone when they called to tell me that my husband, Matt, an active-duty Marine, had a seizure and his heart had stopped the result of a traumatic brain injury he received in Afghanistan. I remember the first time I watched him seize and the color of his lips as they turned an ominous shade of blue. I held his hand, despite the fact that he couldnt remember my name, or his name, or the year, or his family. The doctors told me his memory would come back . I remember the feeling of resentment as my senior leader advised me to get a divorce when I asked for a compassionate reassignment, so that I could get Matt to a hospital capable of taking care of him. I remember the frustration I felt as the Department of Veterans Affairs told me I didnt qualify for the same benefits as civilian spouses do because I was active duty. I remember the feeling of desperation when I was so burned out and depressed that I didnt think I could handle another day. I remember the feeling of victory when I made it through that day, and then the next, and all the hard days after that.

While the U.S. Navy has yet to have a female join their ranks as a Navy SEAL, they did recently have the first female to ever pass the grueling and demanding U.S. Navy SEAL officer training course. That in and of itself is quite the accomplishment, considering the fact that 75% of those who sign up for the 6-month training program quit before its over.

Originally, Navy SEALs were just one of two communities that were required by law to not allow women to join. The other is Navy SWCC . However, that is not the case today.

After graduating from college in 2008, I really wanted to serve in the military. Unfortunately, this meant I would have to hide that I am a lesbian. At the time, being openly gay in the service was forbidden. In 2011, my recruiter called me back and told me that the dont ask, dont tell policy had been repealed. Thank You For Paving The Way For Me

being a FEMALE in the military

Anne Krause, Air Force, 1990-99

I graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1990. Every time I met a woman who graduated from the academy in the previous decade, I thanked her for paving the way for me. It never really dawned on me that I was helping to blaze the trail for others until I went to an air show with my family many years later. I sought out the Thunderbirds executive officer to say hello. The first thing she said to me was, Thank you for paving the way for me. That remark caught me by complete surprise. I remain inspired to climb with one hand while extending the other to help another woman up.

Our daughter spent four months in Georgia with my husbands family and then five months in New Jersey with my parents. My mother brought her back to Germany when she was 18 months old.

Did You Have Any Meals That Were Special While On The Ship Sometimes We Had Special Meals At The Fob For Various Events

Yes!! The mess cooks always made a point to make us feel special on holidays. Once in a blue moon we would get steak as a treat, or turkey on Thanksgiving. If the weather permitted, once every 90 days we would have a BBQ on the fantail of the ship, while at sea. That was pretty cool. It was called a steel-beach picnic.
