Whats Coast Guard Basic Training Like
All Coast Guard basic training is conducted at one location in the US: Cape May, New Jersey.
Growing up in New Jersey, Ive been to Cape May several times.
I can tell you this, its not the part of New Jersey that most people think of when they think of NJ.
Its actually a very nice part of the state, and just so happens to be a popular vacation destination.
Like the other branches of the military, Coast Guard boot camp lasts 8 weeks, and the very first thing youll be tested on is your physical fitness.
Heres a handy bullet-list for whats expected for both men and women:
While boot camp is located on the beach, its certainly no vacation!
Throughout boot camp, seaman recruits will do things like:
- Physical training
Before you graduate boot camp, youll be required to pass the PT test as well.
After boot camp, Seaman recruits will then be assigned to one of the many bases throughout the country.
Should I Join The Navy
It is commonly understood that within the military that the Navy has the best base locations in the US Armed Forces. Although there are minor exceptions, every Navy base is on a coast. So, if you want to serve and the beach life calls to you, consider joining the Navy.
If youre thinking about joining the Navy, one of the biggest decisions you need to make is whether or not youll be OK spending months at a time on a boat.
While most jobs in the Navy will require some time at-sea, this isnt true for every one. Make sure that you know what to expect before signing up if going out to sea is an issue for you.

Not So Cool Jobs In The Army
As I mentioned earlier, your quality of life in the Army will almost completely depend on what MOS you choose.
Picking the worst job in the Army is very difficult, mainly because its completely subjective and everyone has a bias.
With that said, some of the more hated jobs in the Army include:
- Culinary Specialist
Keep in mind that, while some of these jobs arent the most fun, they do offer some pretty goo incentives after your service is up.
For example, retiring from the Army as a chef could have you working for a 4 or 5 star restaurant making upwards of $67K a year.
Same goes for plumber, which has an average base salary of $55,687 per year.

Understand How Recruiters Think
The military puts a lot of pressure on recruiters. Their Job perfomance is not evaluated according to how well they help each person find their true path in life. Their Performance is rated according to how many people they get to join their branch of the service. Once a recruiter has invested time in getting someone to sign a DEP contract, they will typically not give up trying to keep that person in, until it becomes obvious that retaining that person is a lost cause and their time would be better spent on someone else. Then recruiters cut their losses and move on. Different recruiters come to this point at different times depending on the signals they get from the person. Different recruiters use different tactics to keep people from leaving. The sooner someone sends the recruiter a clear signal, the sooner the recruiter will let go and put their energy elsewhere. If a recruit sends a recruiter the message that indicates the recruit still feels obligated, the recruiter will likely persist. Recruiters know that recruits can get out of the DEP, but they usually don’t advertise that fact.

Whats A Typical Day In The Us Army Like
Like most other branches of the military, a typical day starts very early in the morning and ends around 5 pm.
Most of the day will be spent training, marching, or otherwise performing whatever job it is you have.
For the typical infantryman , a typical day might look something like this:
0600 0630: Formation. Basically you will line up with your platoon and prepare for physical evolution.
0630 0800: Conduct physical training. This includes things like push-ups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, running, and calisthenics.
0800 0900: PT ends, and you hit the showers, get in uniform, and go to breakfast.
0930 0945: Report for duty. This is basically where you report back in formation and receive the days orders.
0945 1130: This changes everyday depending on the needs of the unit, but essentially involves performing whatever tasks are necessary.
1130 1300: Chow time. You hit the dining facility for lunch.
1300 1630: Usually varies on a day to day basis, but you can expect to be training during this time.
1630: Back in formation. Review of the days events, and thorough review of the following days events are broadcast.
1645: Release. You have the rest of the day to do what you want.
Obviously this is the most basic of what a typical day in the Army looks like, so dont take all of this as gospel.

If your biggest goal for your future military career is to save lives, join the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is responsible for search and rescue missions, but thats far from all they do. - Its tougher to get in because its such a small branch.

Do Airlines Prefer Military Pilots
The short answer is no.
Airlines hire from two leading suppliers of pilotsthe military and the civilian world.
The civilian path is made of pilots who trained from day one with their eyes on a civilian airline job. They paid for their flight school, and since then, theyve been operating in the civilian aviation world. Their experiences and their logbooks are directly geared toward the end goal of getting an airline job.
Civilian pilots nearly always spend several years working as flight instructors to build hours. This job uniquely prepares pilots for the airline training environment and working conditions. Flight instructors are knowledgeable about civilian regulations and operating procedures. Most airlines love hiring good flight instructors.
Several types of military pilots may be at a disadvantage thanks to the airline hiring process. These include single-screw fighter jet pilots and helicopter pilots. But, on the other hand, fixed-wing military pilots often have more of the coveted turbine time logged than their civilian counterparts.
In the end, job applications to the airlines are based on meeting the minimum qualifications. That will include total flight time in the same category of aircraft and perhaps turbine experience.
