The British Army Esports Team take on the American military | British Army

The list of tasks that a hospital corpsman may be required to complete is quite extensive.

In a couple words, they are responsible for caring for the medical needs of the sick, injured, and even sometimes healthy.

They often maintain treatment records and reports and may supervise preventative medicine programs.

They perform clinical laboratory tests and process X-rays.

They may fill prescriptions and administer immunization programs.

They may conduct preliminary physical examinations and instruct sailors and Marines in first aid, self-aid, and personal hygiene procedures.

Finally, what they may be known best for is transporting the sick and injured on stretchers in combat.

Not So Cool Jobs In The Air Force

While many Air Force jobs are actually considered exciting, there are several jobs that arent exactly considered the most fun or interesting.

Those include:

Becoming An Officer In The Military After College

While its common knowledge that basic training sets recruits on the pathway toward becoming an enlisted service member, those with a desire for leadership opportunities and a bachelors degree can take another route into a military career as a commissioned officer.

The Reserve Officers Training Corps program for college students and Officer Candidate School or Officer Training School for graduates are great options for those who want to earn a four-year college degree before joining the military. Each service branch offers both ROTC and officer schools as entry points to an officer commission.

Heres a handy bullet-list for whats expected for both men and women:

Before you even start boot camp, youll also have to meet the height and weight requirements, grooming standards, and tattoo policy.

While boot camp is located on the beach, its certainly no vacation!

Throughout boot camp, seaman recruits will do things like:

  • Firefighting
  • Physical training

Before you graduate boot camp, youll be required to pass the PT test as well.

After boot camp, Seaman recruits will then be assigned to one of the many bases throughout the country.

Questions To Ask A Us Military Recruiter

Once you have decided which branch you want to join, your next move is to talk to a recruiter.

Before you talk to a recruiter, remember this, because its very important: The first rule with recruiters is to get everything from them in writing.

Dont think that you cant trust recruiters, but you do need to understand that being a recruiter is a joband their job has quotas they must meet. Its your responsibility if they verbally promise you the moon but end up doing a job you never wanted!

Now that weve got that out of the way, lets talk about the questions you need to ask:

  • What are the physical requirements for joining?
  • What are the disqualifying medical or physical issues?
  • How long is my contract actually for?
  • What tests are required for entry, and what scores do I need to qualify for specific jobs?
  • Are there any specialized tests for certain jobs?
  • If I have any disqualifying issues, do I qualify for any waivers?
  • Can I join with a friend and stay together?
  • Can you guarantee me a certain job or duty station?
  • If joining the National Guard or Reserves, will I qualify for the same benefits? Also, will I qualify for the GI Bill?
  • If I am married, what benefits are my family entitled to?
  • If I am interested in Special Operations, can I sign a contract to go straight into their training pipeline or do I have to serve a minimum amount of time first?
  • If I am in college or have a college degree, how do I join as an officer?

The Navy Isnt For You If:

However, if you tend to get seasick or being in the water scares the living daylights out of you, then you may want to reconsider the Navy. If youre a home-body, the Navy might not be the best fit for you as a majority of a Sailors time is spent out at sea. Being away from home and your family for long periods of time should be expected.

Do Any Services Have Higher Allowances

No. Allowances are the same in all six branches of service. This includes BAS, COLA and BAH.

BAH is the only allowance that may vary. However, since DOD specifically calculates BAH to offset housing costs, you wont have a relative advantage to your income by living in a higher BAH area since your housing cost will also be higher.

In the Navy, for example, you might live coastally, which tends to have higher BAH rates, but your housing costs will likely absorb this extra money not your bank account.

Want To Join The Us Military Heres How To Pick The Right Branch

Thinking about joining the U.S. military? There are a lot of things to consider. Here is a guide and many factors to consider: If youre considering starting a new career in the United States military, how do you choose the best branch for you? The truth is, the vast majority of pay and benefits youre eligible to receive are the same regardless of the branch you choose, so finding the right fit is more a question of your preferred job and what type of culture you think youre best suited for.

Regardless of the military branch you choose, now may really be among the best times in history to join, as the culture shift known as the great resignation thats come about in recent years has resulted in the US offering historically high signing bonuses alongside concerted efforts to make life in the service a career people will want to stick around in. Not to mention the fact that the modern GI Bill does more than pay for school once you get out, it also pays you to attend classes as well.

Pay and benefits are mostly the same regardless of which military branch you choose

Its important to know that, regardless of which military branch you choose, your paycheck will pretty much stay the same. The Defense Department breaks down salary by pay grades, which are universal across the force. While the ranks may carry different titles in different branches , E-4s receive the same basic pay and entitlements regardless.

    Which Service Should I Join

Next, you’ll need to decide which service you are interested in. Sometimes, you’ll know this in advance. Perhaps you had a friend or relative who served or is serving in a particular branch of the military and you want to follow in their footsteps. You should give this matter much study and thought.

Each of the services is different, and some people may be more suited for one service vs. another. Make sure you select a service that you are interested in joining, based upon your interests. Don’t join a service just because someone else liked it, or expects you to. It’s your life and your decision.

There are also differences in education benefits, assignments, job guarantees, education programs, and enlistment/re-enlistment bonuses.

Recruiters see lots of folks who want to enlist and serve in one of these elite fields. The truth of the matter is that most people who apply for the “elite” programs wash out due to the very rigorous training requirements. If you enlist to become one of these “elites,” and you wash out of training, you don’t get to quit. You’ll be required to serve the remainder of your enlistment contract in a different job.
