What Is An Army Reserve Career Really Like

What Is The Army Reserves? | The Basics

By | Submitted On September 28, 2009

The Army Reserve has a long and respected history. Formed near the beginning of the last century, originally Army jobs in the reserves were limited to officers. After the first World War, however, it was changed to include enlisted men and women as well.

So What Does It Mean to be in the Army Reserve?

Soldiers in the Army Reserve provide their service on a part-time rather than a full-time basis. When not on active duty, soldiers typically serve one weekend per month, and two full weeks during the year for annual training.

The Reserve requires an eight-year service commitment and usually includes a period of active service in the regular Army and the remainder of the eight years to be served in the Reserves. There are some soldiers who choose to serve the entire term in the Army Reserve however.

What Kinds of Army Jobs Do Reservists Do?

Army careers are varied, and the opportunities for reservists are vast. The Army Reserve has soldiers in chemical brigades, judge advocate units, medical groups, railway units, water supply battalions, psychological operations units, and public affairs units. And these are but a sample of what the reserves have to offer!

Army Active Duty Vs Army Reserves

There is not one option that is better than the other. It merely comes down to what your needs and goals are.

If you are looking to pursue your education on a full-time basis and want to stay close to family, then the reserves may be the best option for you.

If you are looking to travel overseas and looking for a full-time career, then enlisting active-duty Army would be the best option for you.

As always, it is best to do as much research as possible when looking through which opportunities in the Army and the other military branches. Talk to as many service members and veterans as possible. Dont forget, your recruiter is an excellent resource for you. Theyll be able to see which lifestyle will help you achieve what you are looking for in your service.

Importance To The Active Army

This Is The Army Reserve

In the early 1980s, Army Reserve soldiers constituted the following numbers in US Army units:

  • 100% of training divisions, brigades, and railway units
  • 97% of civil affairs units
  • smaller percentages of other units and formations such as the 100th Battalion, 442 Infantry Regiment .

In 1980, the peacetime USAR chain of command was overlaid with a wartime trace. In an expansion of the roundout and affiliation programs begun ten years earlier, CAPSTONE purported to align every Army Reserve unit with the active and reserve component units with which they were anticipated to deploy. Units maintained lines of communication with the units often hundreds or thousands of miles away in peacetime who would presumably serve above or below them in the event of mobilization. This communication, in some cases, extended to coordinated annual training opportunities.

Despite the commonly held belief that CAPSTONE traces were set in stone, the process of selecting units to mobilize and deploy in 1990 and 1991 in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm frequently ignored CAPSTONE.

In 2008, the Army Reserve contains the following percentages of the Army’s units of each category:

Army Reserve Vs National Guard

To a casual observer or to someone who is not aware of the structure of the army in United States, there might not be any difference between Army Reserve and National Guard. However, this is not true and, despite similarities, the two forces have quite a few differences. In fact, though they share the same army uniform, they are two different organizations and do different duties. This article intends to clarify the differences between the two once and for all.

It is true that superficially, they look alike because of the uniform and rank structure, which is same as the US army. They have the same number of soldiers in a squad and a particular number of squads make up a platoon in both, just like the US army. However, the biggest difference between them and the US army lies in the fact that they are reserve type units, which means that they are not full time or active army units. The soldiers in these units train at least one weekend in a month and also take part in an annual training lasting two weeks. But this is where similarities between the two units end.

Army Reserve Works Temporary Promotions And Keeping First Sergeants At The Company Level

The Army Reserve is finding a reserve-tailored way to promote their enlisted and officers while they continue to battle recruiting shortfalls.

That will mean more temporary promotions for many soldiers, the top enlisted Army Reserve soldier said.

More senior noncommissioned officers are going to see a shift, as well, Command Sgt. Maj. of the U.S. Army Reserve Andrew Lombardo said at an Association of the U.S. Army event Monday.

Lombardo wants to see a first sergeant leading at the company level. He also wants to see the reserve quit leaning on sergeants first class for that leadership position.

RELATED

Lombardo talked Monday about various reserve initiatives, but much of the hour-long event was focused on promotions and manpower.

The force did fall short of their recruiting goals this past year, Lombardo noted, which Army Times reported in November.

Only 11,690 reserve applicants shipped to training, despite a target of 15,875.

One of the challenges has been the active duty sides better than average retention in recent years. Active duty soldiers leaving for the reserves has traditionally been a recruiting standby, Lombardo said. But reserve retention is doing well, too.

Our retention mission is looking better than ever, he noted.

Now the challenge is putting those junior soldiers into more senior slots and improving even the senior NCO ranks.

At the same time, they have a deficiency of 2,500 sergeants and 800 captains across the reserve.

Who Serves And How

The majority of Reservists serve one evening a week, one weekend a month. Many also provide essential support for longer terms within the CA Regular Force.

Reservists come from all sorts of backgrounds from young Canadians graduating in high school or entering universities or colleges, to civic-minded Canadians of all ages who have careers outside the ARes in a wide range of civilian occupations.

Simply put, training and employment within the ARes meets the needs of citizens willing to take on the Army challenge and contribute their varied skills and backgrounds that enrich and strengthen the Canadian Army.

To ensure the ARes can meet its full operational potential, the CA is increasing the size of the ARes, reducing the recruitment process to a matter of weeks, and fully integrating Reservists into the total Force with additional roles that provide full-time capability through part-time service, in accordance with the Government of Canadas new Defence Policy: Strong, Secured, Engaged.

At present, there are over 18,500 Army Reservists across Canada who look forward to a great future of personal growth, training and missions. By 2020, it is expected that the Army Reserve will grow to over 21,000.

To join the Army Reserve, start by dropping by the local armoury in your community or region. If you are looking for a particular trade, you must join a unit that offers that type of work. Each units page has a list of the trades they offer.

Rebuilding And Named The Army Reserve

U.S. Army Reserve – The Facts Behind The Myths

In 2010, the government set up a commission, chaired by General Sir Nicholas Houghton, to review the state of the reserves and to design their future. The commission reported in July 2011. It found that, despite their operational commitments, the reserves had been neglected: some estimates put its trained and active strength as low as 14,000. There had been âa failure to resource recruiting and good training, especially collective training to offer career progression to update operational roles to permit deployment in formed sub-units and therefore offer command opportunitiesâ Its recommendations included that a new target of 30,000 trained strength by 2020 be set.

The government published the report on 18 July with an immediate promise of £1.5 Billion funding over ten years. In October 2012 MoD announced a new name for the Territorial Army, its current name, the Army Reserve. Most of the recommendations of the commission were adopted in the White Paper July 2013 including the critical importance of providing operational and training opportunities for formed units and sub-units.

Army Reservists have a minimum commitment to serve 27 training days per annum or 19 days for some national units. This period normally includes a two-week period of continuous training either as an Army Reserve unit, on courses or attached to a Regular unit. Army Reserve soldiers are paid at a similar rate as their regular equivalents while engaged on military activities.

Top 5 Benefits Of The Army Reserve

by MilitaryBenefits

Army Reservists proudly wear the title of Citizen-Soldier, but they are much different from full-time Soldiers in the Armed Forces. Serving in the Army Reserve is equivalent to having a part-time job. They maintain their full-time civilian career or attend school while serving at a location close to home.

Reservists are responsible for attending training one weekend every month and serve two weeks of mandatory training each year. The service time for Army Reservists is a minimum of 38 days out of the entire year, and the annual pay and its subsequent benefits simply cant be beat.

Members of the Reserve Component may also be when needed, but they also have the opportunity to volunteer for an Active Duty mobilization within an Army human resources database of available positions throughout the United States and internationally.
