Why Does The Military Impose Age Enlistment Restrictions

WHAT IS THE AGE REQUIREMENT TO JOIN THE ARMY, ARMY RESERVE OR ARMY NATIONAL GUARD?

You might think that there should be no age limit on wanting to serve your country. However, the age enlistment limit ensures that every recruit has the time to satisfy minimal education requirements and are adequately fit.

Although we would not like to admit it, the human body tends to become less physically fit as it ages. Over a certain age threshold, it is difficult for a person to be in good physical condition to meet the necessary standard of fighting for a country.

Where Does Basic Training Take Place

For all full-time regular force candidates, basic training takes place at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

All part-time candidates joining their local Primary Reserve unit will undergo similar basic training objectives. Reserve units will conduct their Basic Training either at the local reserve unit location or at a Canadian Armed Forces training centre. Locations vary depending on units. Talk to a Primary Reserve unit recruiter for more information on their Basic Training program.

What Should I Ask My Recruiter

Recruiters must present an accurate picture of training in the Reserves or National Guard. You should be aware of all aspects of the environment in the Reserves or National Guard. Be sure you fully understand the enlistment contract. You should ask about:

  • Details and qualifications for each specialty.
  • Films or videos about training and duties.
  • Boot camp
  • Length and location of training.
  • Special enlistment programs if you have completed Junior ROTC.
  • Overseas deployments, remote and long duty.
  • Haircut and grooming standards.
  • Off-duty education and educational benefits.
  • Guaranteed training programs.

Raising The Age Of Military Enlistment

The following is the introduction for the book Only the Young Shall Die by Peter Polack and Jack McCain.

As counter-intuitive as it would appear, the average age of young men dying in combat has decreased substantially from the mid-twenties of earlier wars to the late teens. One estimate puts the average age of Union soldiers during the American Civil War at just under twenty-six years old. A report on enlisted men from North-West England in the Great War puts the average age of dead soldiers at twenty-seven years old but more nineteen year olds died than any other age group. By World War II the average age of the US fighting man was still twenty-six years.

In the Vietnam War the average age of soldiers killed in action had declined to 23 years and twenty percent of those killed were less than twenty years old. Whilst it is tempting to be distracted by the use of the term average which ultimately benefits future recruiters, the simple fact is that sixty-one percent of those killed were under the allowable age for drinking in the USA, twenty-one years old.

A snapshot of this evolving paradigm came on 10 July 2009 when five UK servicemen with an average age of twenty years were killed in the very dangerous Helmand province of Afghanistan. Three of the dead soldiers were only eighteen.

Perhaps the best conclusion was given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who pronounced this verdict from a familiar seat to some returning veterans, his wheelchair:

Why Does The Military Have Enlistment Age Limits

Army Reserve age limit raised to 52

The minimum and maximum age limits for potential enlistees ensure they have had the opportunity to meet their minimal education requirements and are in good physical condition. The goal is to recruit educated, able-bodied enlistees, minimize the risk of injury and reduce their recovery time if injured.

Federal law has established the maximum military recruitment age limit to be age 42, although each service branch has the flexibility to establish its own limits below that age. For almost all male U.S. citizens ages 18-25 living in the United States, there is a requirement to register with the Selective Service System.

What If I Have A Problem Getting Time Off From My Employer To Fulfill My Military Service Obligations

By law, as a member of the Reserve or National Guard, you must, upon request, be granted a leave of absence to satisfy a requirement for military training. The Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act requires employers to provide Reservists with time away from their jobs to perform military duty. However, you must notify your employer that you intend to take military leave. You must be reemployed after completion of your military duty and return to your job within a reasonable time. You must be treated as though you never had left employment, including schedule pay raises, promotions or credit for longevity or vacation. Your employer only has to hold a job open for 60 months if you accept voluntary orders.

What Is The Simultaneous Membership Program

Army raises reservist age limit as recruitment drive falters

The simultaneous membership program is a unique program offered by the Reserve and National Guard. It allows a college-bound member of the Reserve or National Guard who is already assigned or has enlisted in an Army National Guard unit to enroll simultaneously in an Reserve Officer Training Corps program. SMPs enter the Army’s Advanced ROTC program while at the same time serving in their unit as a cadet.

This on-the-job training was designed to relieve a shortage of junior officers in the Army National Guard. If you participate in the SMP, you continue to serve and draw monthly and annual training pay while you are in the ROTC. Additionally, Army ROTC cadets receive a $200 monthly stipend.

An SMP cadet performs the duties of a second lieutenant under the supervision of a commissioned officer. The requirements for this program are that you must be 30 years of age or younger, attend college full time and be in good physical shape.

The SMP is offered only on campuses where an Army ROTC program exists — or if you participate in an Army ROTC program at a nearby college or university. If you try SMP, you still will attend ROTC Advance Camp during the summer between your junior and senior year.

Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

Army Reservist Age Limit Raised To 52

The upper age limit for some soldiers to join the Army Reserve has been increased by nine years to 52.

The upper age limit for some soldiers to join the Army Reserve has been increased by nine years to 52. The Ministry of Defence said the age limit for individuals with specific qualifications or experience has been raised from 45 to 50, while the maximum age for ex-regular soldiers joining was increased earlier this year from 43 to 52.

An MoD spokeswoman said: “We make no apology for revising the age requirements for ex-regular soldiers to join the Reserves and share their wealth of knowledge and expertise. All recruits have to meet strict fitness requirements, or could face discharge.”

The upper age limit for ex-regular soldiers to join was increased in May to “better reflect demographics and health of the population” and widen the recruitment pool, the MoD said.

The change comes as the Army’s plan to cut regular troops and replace them with reservists came under fire yesterday, after it was revealed the size of the part-time force increased by just 20 in the last 12 months.

Figures showed the trained strength of the volunteer Army Reserve rose from 19,290 in October last year to 19,310 a year later.

Tory MP John Baron said the plans to replace 20,000 regular troops with 30,000 reservists were a “shambles” and shadow defence secretary Vernon Coaker warned the forces could be left with a “dangerous” gap.
