How To Prepare For Basic Training

Army Basic Training: ‘Typical Day in Basic Training’ (Episode 3)

Barring a physical or mental impairment, would-be recruits can try to get in condition before they enlist, so when they get to boot camp they’re at least somewhat prepared. Learn what the physical requirements are for the branch of service you want to join, and try to get in shape.

Be warned that even if you’re in top physical condition, boot camp training is rigorous and difficult beyond most recruits’ expectations.

Diet Fitness And Medical Care

Prior to arriving at basic training, all prospective trainees undergo a physical examination by a doctor at their local Military Entrance Processing Station or MEPS. Trainees receive their initial weigh-in when they arrive at Lackland. If the trainee is under or over the height and weight standards, the trainee is placed on double rations if underweight , or in a “diet” status if overweight.

All trainees receive three meals a day, also known as “chow time.” These are either served at the dining facility , or as a Meal, Ready-to-Eat or MRE during field training. Meal time may last 30 minutes or less, depending on the order the flight arrives at the chow hall. Trainees are mandated a minimum of 15 minutes to consume each meal. However, trainees usually receive less than five minutes to actually eat their meal, kindly referred to as “Sit, Lick a biscuit, and Get Out.” Much of the 15 minutes may be spent waiting in line, trainee “water monitors” reporting in the chow hall, and removing, properly storing, and re-donning any carried equipment.

Trainees that sustain injuries or illnesses that disrupt their training are transferred to the Medical Hold Flight of the 324th Training Squadron. Once they are again medically fit, the trainee will generally return to their prior training squadron as part of a flight currently at an equivalent place in the training cycle that they left.

    Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

    • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
    • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
    • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

    Communication In The Military

Communication has always been important with in the military from day one. Wihtout this communication no soldier would know where to be or when to be there. When the U. S. military first began we fought in a completely different style than we do today. Back then there was alot more chivalry to war to than there is today. They stood on line with their chests out proud of what they were doing. Without communication the first rank would not know when to fire their muskets, when to take a knee, when to begin reloading their weapons and when to stand back up to take aim to start the process all over again.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary the classification of communication states its a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behaviour. In relation, communication is the heart of what makes the United States Army what it is today. Without Communication vital information would not be passed down from the Chief of Command to a chain of Non Commissioned Officers to the soldiers. Not to mention, innocent lives would be in jeopardy, missions would be misconstrued, and simple information from NCO to soldier would be conflicted.

    Realities Of Boot Camp

Military boot camp is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. However, the rigid routine and absolute control over every aspect of your life are several times worse than normal military duty, and that’s by design.

It’s the job of the Training Instructors and Drill Instructors to either adjust your attitude to a military way of thinking or to drum you out before the military spends too much money on your training.

They do this by applying significant degrees of physical and mental stress, while at the same time teaching you the fundamentals of military rules and the policies, etiquette, and customs of your particular military service.

The training programs are scientifically and psychologically designed to disassemble the “civilian” and build from scratch a proud, physically fit, and dedicated member of the military.

Members of each branch of service typically consider their own basic training to be the most challenging and toughest of all the branches its a debate of hard-knock stories and amazing feats of endurance and learning. The reality is that all recruit training for U.S. military service is strenuous, mentally and physically, and all who find the intestinal fortitude to complete them should be respected and commended.

A common question may be “How long is military boot camp?” On average training can last anywhere from 8-12 weeks. While each service has different training schedules and requirements, orientation week is basically the same across all five branches. During this time, new recruits:

    • Turn in enlistment paperwork
    • Receive dental and medical exams, as well as immunizations
    • Receive uniforms and training gear
    • Receive required haircuts
    • Create direct-deposit accounts for paychecks

Though Week Zero may be considered intake, actual training does begin at orientation, with many services beginning physical training within the first few days. This varies from branch to branch, but overall training typically lasts between eight and 12 weeks, culminating in graduation.

Why Is It Called The Peanut Butter Shot

The peanut butter shot gets its name from the disgusting, thick, creamy appearance of the bicillin in the injection needle and because it feels like theyre injecting peanut butter in your ass. The medication also has a slightly brown tinge to the white substance.

To ensure safe administration, the bicillin shot is slowly injected into each recruit, which makes the experience even more painful and memorable. The combination of the appearance and slow injection process further contributes to the name peanut butter shot. The thick substance feels like getting cement injected into your backside.

After vaccination, this forms a huge, painful lump at the injection site. New recruits are instructed to gently massage the area to encourage absorption into the muscle. The high liquid density of the bicillin shot causes slow absorption, which takes your body a few days to absorb. The slow absorption process is part of the unique experience that makes the peanut butter shot memorable.

Are there any side effects associated with the Bicillin Peanut butter shot?

As if the injections physical pain isnt enough, recruits can still suffer from potential side effects after receiving the peanut butter shot. Getting a high dose of bicillin is known to cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, and blurred vision. Many recruits have injection site reactions, which include skin changes, swelling and a hard lump that wont go away for a few days.

    Training The American Gi

As the United States prepared for war, military leaders had a long list of needsguns, tanks, ships, and equipment of every kind. One of the things they needed most of all, however, was people.

    Primary Image:

As the United States prepared for war, military leaders had a long list of needsguns, tanks, ships, and equipment of every kind. One of the things they needed most of all, however, was people. In 1939, the US Army only had 174,000 soldiers, including the Army Air Forces. At its peak during the war, the Army grew to over 8 million men and women in uniform, joined by an additional 3.4 million in the Navy. The new additions were mostly young Americans who would normally have been pursuing jobs, schooling, and family life, but instead were answering the nations call to arms. Many of them had never even traveled outside their home state, let alone Europe, Asia, or the Pacific Islands. Preparing these millions of civilians for war would be one of the militarys most daunting challenges.

Soldiers tackle part of an obstacle course at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, 1942.

“It was true we were all volunteers and all of them were young men18, 19 years oldand all of them wanted to prove that they were men and that they were part of the best and that they were the best. That was true. We were.”

    T. Moffatt Burris, 504th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division

    Remember Why You Joined

What Army Recruits Go Through At Boot Camp

During Basic Military Training, it can be a grind day in and out with the speed and intensity you will experience in physical training, classroom learning, and also lack the right amount of quality sleep. At some point, you will feel low energy, and you may wonder if joining the service was the right thing to do.

Basic Military Training is designed to mold you into the best servicemember you can be. The best thing you can do when times get tough is to connect back to the reason you signed up in the first place.

Often, reflecting on the one or many reasons you join, provides a bolt of energy or a second wind during those challenging times. The next time you are out on a hike, a run, or training for Basic Military Training, practice connecting to those reasons and dig deep. You will be surprised how much farther you can run, and how much further you can go.

    Submit Your Application 4medical Exam

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. Then the medical staff will conduct a physical exam to measure your height, weight, evaluate your vision, colour perception and hearing. The second step is a medical file review to determine any limitations that will affect your training and career.

What Is The Peanut Butter Shot

It is a high dose of Bicillin given to new recruits. Bicillin is able to kill a wide range of bacteria and help protect the immune system of new enlistees while they complete their intense training. Injectable bicillin can kill everything from strep throat infections, moderate respiratory infections, rheumatic fever, and even syphilis. Bicillin covers many infections caused by bacteria, which makes it essential for troops travelling internationally. Making it mandatory ensures a baseline level of health across all troops.

The injection site is where most of the fear associated with this immunization comes into play. The peanut butter shot military version is injected into the buttocks to ensure deep intramuscular absorption. Injecting into the buttocks also reduces the chance of the medication interfering with arteries or nerves. In rare cases, side effects such as permanent paralysis, necrosis, and gangrene severe enough to require amputation can occur if the Bicillin isnt injected properly. New recruits can avoid getting it if they can prove an allergy to penicillin. Otherwise, the painful experience is something that brings all the recruits together.

Bonding And The Hierarchy Of Esteem

As a buffer against the stressful conditions of their training, the trainee group normally forms a strong bond of mutual loyalty. Researchers in the U.S. have described it as an intense “we-feeling”, which can feel more powerful than the civilian bonds that recruits are familiar with. In 2006, an official report on Australian Defence Force training explained the importance of the group bond:

Willingness to apply lethal force requires⦠sufficient bonding within the team to override each individualâs natural human resistance to kill. The toughness and bonding required increases the closer the contact with the enemy.

Recruits are taught to be proud of their identity as professional military personnel, and of their unit in particular. Heroic regimental stories and symbols are used to ennoble the recruits’ own unit above others, and above other branches of the armed forces , thereby establishing a hierarchy of esteem the same stories are used to draw a contrast with the purported inferior norms associated with civilian life.
