Barring a physical or mental impairment, would-be recruits can try to get in condition before they enlist, so when they get to boot camp they’re at least somewhat prepared. Learn what the physical requirements are for the branch of service you want to join, and try to get in shape.
Be warned that even if you’re in top physical condition, boot camp training is rigorous and difficult beyond most recruits’ expectations.
Diet Fitness And Medical Care

Prior to arriving at basic training, all prospective trainees undergo a physical examination by a doctor at their local Military Entrance Processing Station or MEPS. Trainees receive their initial weigh-in when they arrive at Lackland. If the trainee is under or over the height and weight standards, the trainee is placed on double rations if underweight , or in a “diet” status if overweight.
All trainees receive three meals a day, also known as “chow time.” These are either served at the dining facility , or as a Meal, Ready-to-Eat or MRE during field training. Meal time may last 30 minutes or less, depending on the order the flight arrives at the chow hall. Trainees are mandated a minimum of 15 minutes to consume each meal. However, trainees usually receive less than five minutes to actually eat their meal, kindly referred to as “Sit, Lick a biscuit, and Get Out.” Much of the 15 minutes may be spent waiting in line, trainee “water monitors” reporting in the chow hall, and removing, properly storing, and re-donning any carried equipment.
Trainees that sustain injuries or illnesses that disrupt their training are transferred to the Medical Hold Flight of the 324th Training Squadron. Once they are again medically fit, the trainee will generally return to their prior training squadron as part of a flight currently at an equivalent place in the training cycle that they left.

Getting Fit With Fitt
As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:
- Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
- Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
- A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

Why Is It Called The Peanut Butter Shot
The peanut butter shot gets its name from the disgusting, thick, creamy appearance of the bicillin in the injection needle and because it feels like theyre injecting peanut butter in your ass. The medication also has a slightly brown tinge to the white substance.
To ensure safe administration, the bicillin shot is slowly injected into each recruit, which makes the experience even more painful and memorable. The combination of the appearance and slow injection process further contributes to the name peanut butter shot. The thick substance feels like getting cement injected into your backside.
After vaccination, this forms a huge, painful lump at the injection site. New recruits are instructed to gently massage the area to encourage absorption into the muscle. The high liquid density of the bicillin shot causes slow absorption, which takes your body a few days to absorb. The slow absorption process is part of the unique experience that makes the peanut butter shot memorable.

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. Then the medical staff will conduct a physical exam to measure your height, weight, evaluate your vision, colour perception and hearing. What Is The Peanut Butter Shot
It is a high dose of Bicillin given to new recruits. Bicillin is able to kill a wide range of bacteria and help protect the immune system of new enlistees while they complete their intense training. Injectable bicillin can kill everything from strep throat infections, moderate respiratory infections, rheumatic fever, and even syphilis. Bicillin covers many infections caused by bacteria, which makes it essential for troops travelling internationally. Making it mandatory ensures a baseline level of health across all troops.
The injection site is where most of the fear associated with this immunization comes into play. The peanut butter shot military version is injected into the buttocks to ensure deep intramuscular absorption. Injecting into the buttocks also reduces the chance of the medication interfering with arteries or nerves. In rare cases, side effects such as permanent paralysis, necrosis, and gangrene severe enough to require amputation can occur if the Bicillin isnt injected properly. New recruits can avoid getting it if they can prove an allergy to penicillin. Otherwise, the painful experience is something that brings all the recruits together.

As a buffer against the stressful conditions of their training, the trainee group normally forms a strong bond of mutual loyalty. Researchers in the U.S. have described it as an intense “we-feeling”, which can feel more powerful than the civilian bonds that recruits are familiar with. In 2006, an official report on Australian Defence Force training explained the importance of the group bond:
Willingness to apply lethal force requiresâ¦ sufficient bonding within the team to override each individualâs natural human resistance to kill. The toughness and bonding required increases the closer the contact with the enemy.

How Long Is Air Force Basic Training
Air Force Basic Training is approximately eight and a half weeks at Joint-Base San Antonio Lackland and begins with an in-processing week called Week Zero. Each week is broken down into specific activities with the successive weeks building on what was taught in the prior weeks.
