What Is A Military Gt Score
The military GT score is the General Technical test area of the United States Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test and is a measure of word knowledge, paragraph comprehension and arithmetic reasoning. These line scores determine which military occupational specialty an individual may qualify for.
Many military occupational specialties have minimum requirements for particular line scores, however, the United States military has many jobs available in each branch that maximize the strengths and aptitudes of a recruit. For the Army, a GT line score of 110 qualifies a recruit for several jobs including diver, Special Forces Weapons Sergeant and journalist.
What Is The Retesting Policy For The Asvab
After taking the ASVAB you may retake the test 30 days after your initial test date, but after your first retest, you must wait 6 months. The military will take your most recent score, not your highest. There is no lifetime limit for the ASVAB however, every branch of the armed forces has their own retesting policies for the ASVAB.
For the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy a retest will only be authorized if a recruit’s test scores expire, their scores are too low, if the recruiter feels your scores do not match your qualifications, or in the event of special circumstances that bar a recruit from taking the test. A retest will not be authorized to simply increase an already successful score in order to qualify for particular occupations or for enlistment bonuses. Usually, recruits with successful scores holding a job reservation or who are enrolled in the Delay Entry Program are not eligible to retest.
All of the aforementioned standards apply for the US Coast Guard as well with one notable exception. The Coast Guard will allow a retest for the sole purpose of raising test scores, but a six month window must exist between test dates.

Air Force Education Requirements
It is nearly impossible to get into the Air Force without a high school diploma. The chances are incredibly slim for people who only get a GED. Historically, only 0.5% of all annual Air Force enlistments have only a GED. If a GED holder is trying to enlist, that person must score a 50 or higher on the AFQT. On the upside, college credits may result in a higher enlistment rank!

How To Calculate Your Gt Scores
The formulas for calculating your GT score are readily available to you. It may be helpful when taking your practice exams for the ASVAB to determine what combination of scores may be needed to reach the score you desire.
There are two types of GT scores that can be calculated. This includes the Army GT score and the Marine Corp GT score.
To begin calculating your score, you will need several of your other subtest scores. To begin calculating your GT score, you will need to locate the following scores from your results:
- Word Knowledge
- Arithmetic Reasoning
- Mechanical Comprehension This score is used only to calculate the Marine GT score.
The first step in determining your GT score is to calculate your Verbal Expression score. You can do this by adding the Word Knowledge score and the Paragraph Comprehension Score together. Once you have added those scores together, you will have your verbal expression score. This is represented in the expression below.
VE = PC + WK
Next, you will need to take the Verbal Expression score that you just calculated and add it to your Arithmetic Reasoning score. If you are looking for your Army GT score, this is it.
Army GT Score = AR + VE
If you are attempting to calculate your Marine Corp score, you will need to also add in your Mechanical Comprehension Score. Therefore, you will be adding the Verbal Expression score plus the Arithmetic Reasoning plus the Mechanical Comprehension score. This is expressed as below.

Armed Forces Qualification Score
All branches, from the Army to the Marines, use the Armed Forces Qualification score, or AFQT. This score is a combination of three of the subtests of the ASVAB. Each branch then uses its own scores to help to determine which career path would be best for the candidates based on how well they did on the test.
How To Convert Raw Asvab Scores To Army Scores
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery contains nine subtests. When you take the ASVAB, you do not receive an “ASVAB score.” Instead, you receive a series of scores calculated from these subtest scores. All branches of the armed services use the Armed Forces Qualification Test score, which is a combination of three of the nine subtests. Each branch also uses its own scores to determine career aptitude. One of the scores these composite scores, for example, is the General Technical score in the Army and Marine Corps.
Locate the scores for the Arithmetic Reasoning , Word Knowledge , and Paragraph Comprehension subtest scores on your score report. If you are calculating the Marine Corps GT score, you will also need the Mechanical Comprehension score.
Example: AR = 47 WK = 66 PC = 62 MC = 59
Determine your Verbal Expression score. Add the WK and PC scores and then multiply the result by two.
VE = 2 VE = 2 VE = 256
Add the VE score to the AR score to get the Army GT score. For the Marine Corps GT score, you must also add the MC score.
GT = VE + AR GT = 256 + 47 GT = 303
GT = 303 + MC GT = 303 + 59 GT = 362

KEY POINTS OF DISCUSSION
A GT score is your score on the general technical section of the ASVAB and is a combination of 3 subjects: arithmetic reasoning, paragraph comprehension and vocabulary. In general, it measures your aptitude for learning.
Your GT score is _____. I recommend you retake the test in order to raise your GT score.
The reason for this is that a lower score limits your opportunities in the Army. Desireable jobs or positions, such as warrant officer or special forces and even some service schools, require higher GT scores. A GT score of 110 is required for retraining. A GT score of 110 is also the minimum requirement for Drill Sergeant, Recruiter, and other special duty assignments.
If you decide to pursue this opportunity, our unit will provide the study material required to prepare for the test and someone will be assigned to coach you if you need help. You can take an hour off every day to study and I will be glad to help if needed. The AFCT does not actually measure intelligence. It only measures your familiarity with terms associated with what the test creators considered to be key topics. With just a moderate amount of study, you can easily make huge gains in your score.
You should be aware that, if you retake the AFCT, your new scores will count even if your new score is lower. For that reason it is important that you take this seriously and prepare for the exam.

Armed Forces Qualification Test Score
How is the ASVAB qualification test score calculated? First, it is important to know the AFQT standard score is ultimately computed using the results of just four of the nine sections of the ASVAB. Those four sections are Word Knowledge , Paragraph Comprehension , Mathematics Knowledge , and Arithmetic Reasoning .
