What If I Have A Problem Getting Time Off From My Employer To Fulfill My Reserve Military Service Obligations

Acronyms you need to know when joining the Army

By law, as a member of the Reserve, you, upon request, must be granted a leave of absence to satisfy a requirement for military training. The Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act requires employers to provide Reservists with time away from their jobs to perform military duty. However, you must notify your employer that you intend to take military leave. You must be reemployed after completion of your military duty and return to your job within a reasonable time. You must be treated as though you had never left employment, including scheduled pay raises, promotions or credit for longevity or vacation. Your employer only has to hold a job open for 60 months if you accept voluntary orders.

Getting Ready To Train

An excellent way to determine your fitness level is to undergo a fitness appraisal.

Talk to your doctor before starting a fitness routine or appraisal, particularly if you have a heart condition, feel chest pain, lose your balance or consciousness, have a bone or joint problem, or take drugs for a blood pressure or heart condition. Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

Basic Training To Join The Army

Basic Training, or known as boot camp, is an intense program that introduces recruits to the military services life and trains a person into a soldier.

You may only have a short time for your new career path preparation depending on when you leave for the boot camp. That means you should organize everything in order to get ready before the Army boot camp. Think of heading out for the boot camp as any other move. Youll need to put into storage such items as mail forwarding, your car, and packing items. If you even have a pet, youll want to find someone to take care of it while youre gone or find another home.

When you join the Army, you are provided a list of clothing and toiletries to bring, so make sure you find time to prep those items before leaving. Youll also want to make sure you have any needed documents, such as your Social Security card, birth certificates, and bank information. These may take some time to get if you dont already have them, so dont leave this until the last minute, if possible.

Basic Training Locations

After enlistment, you will do basic training at one of several locations around the country. Army basic training locations are:

  • Fort Benning, Ga.

  • Fort Sill, Okla.

  • Fort Jackson, S.C.

Getting Fit With Fitt

7 Things You NEED To Know before Joining The Army (2021)

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.
