The Role Of An Army Social Worker

Q& Army: What opportunities does the Army have to offer? | GOARMY | Interview

Social workers employed by the American Red Cross assisted soldiers during both World Wars, but werent commissioned as Army officers until July 1945. Today, Army social workers provide a variety of services to active-duty service members and their families, including clinical counseling, crisis intervention and critical event debriefing. Service members rely on military social workers for help dealing with all manner of psychological and emotional disorders, as well as substance abuse issues and family crises. Social workers may also help soldiers prepare for the transition to private sector life and offer mental health therapy for conditions such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder .

In addition to working directly with service members and their families, a military social worker may participate in or lead research in areas such as pre- and post-deployment resiliency, comprehensive health care, and the transition to civilian life, as well as assist in training medical personnel or consult on policy development.

Regardless of which discipline they choose, social workers are vital to the military. According to data compiled by the Military Health System Management Analysis and Reporting Tool, military social workers conducted more than 1.3 million behavioral health encounters in 2018, more than any other behavioral health profession.

What Sports Are In The Us Military

I’ve always been a bit of a lazy bugger. I’ve never shown much interest in sports, and when I was in the Marines, I was usually angry enough about being up for a run with the rising sun that I left extracurricular activity to the testosterone junkies.

But the physical fitness, teamwork, and gung-ho of sporting all come naturally to the military environment, and many folks heartier than I need to let off steam on the playing field after a long days’ work. Not only that, sporting events are a useful tool for recruiting and public relations, as any college coach will tell you. So it’s no surprise that if you join the military, there are plenty of opportunities in most locations to get a game in. And if you’re good enough, some of them may get you out of work earning military sports an honorable mention as another way to refresh your career.

Red Shield Appeal And Self

The Red Shield Appeal and Self-Denial Appeal are annual fundraising campaigns in some territories, such as the UK and Australia. Each year, officers, soldiers, employees and volunteers take to the streets worldwide to participate in door-to-door or street collections. The money raised is specifically channelled towards The Salvation Army’s social work in each respective territory. Within the territory defined by the United Kingdom and Ireland this collection is known as the Annual Appeal, and it often carries another name that the general public would more readily know in 2012 becoming The Big Collection.

As the popularity of the organisation grew and Salvationists worked their way through the streets of London attempting to convert individuals, they were sometimes confronted with unruly crowds. A family of musicians began working with the Army as their “bodyguards” and played music to distract the crowds. In 1891 a Salvation Army band attempted to parade and play music in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. This was in contravention of local by-laws and resulted in the arrest of 9 Salvationists. Unperturbed the Army continued to parade in defiance of the law, with the aim of gathering support for a change in legislation. Over the next few months the situation in the town escalated to such an extent that there were riots, and mounted police had to be called in from surrounding areas to try to maintain order.

What Does An Army Social Worker Do

For those enlisted in the U.S. Army and other military branches, the mental and emotional challenges associated with serving extend well beyond the battlefield. Soldiers are at greater risk for behavioral health problems and the issues associated with them, including suicide, substance abuse and marital dysfunction. According to a Pentagon report, the suicide rate among active-duty troops increased last year, and has been steadily increasing for the last five years. The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation found that rates of substance abuse are higher among deployed troops than among civilian populations.

The mental and emotional safety net available to civilians through their social circle isnt as readily available to active-duty service members who spend prolonged periods away from loved ones under frequently stressful circumstances. As a result, Army social workers are instrumental in enhancing the readiness of service members and ensuring the emotional well-being of both soldiers and their families.

Recruiter Promises Versus Contract Guarantees

Tips for Reading a Military Resume

No matter what your recruiter promised you, if it’s not in the enlistment contract, or in an annex to the contract, it’s not a promise. Also, it doesn’t much matter what is in the DEP enlistment contract if it isn’t in your active duty enlistment contract, it’s not a promise. If you were promised an enlistment bonus, for example, it needs to be in the final active duty contract, or chances are you’ll never see that bonus. Once you get out of basic training and job training and go to the personnel office at your first base, they’re not going to give one hoot about what anyone “promised” youthey’re only going to care about what is in the enlistment contract.

In fact, the bottom of the very first page of the enlistment contract contains the following clause:

The agreements in this section and attached annex are all the promises made to me by the Government. ANYTHING ELSE ANYONE HAS PROMISED ME IS NOT VALID AND WILL NOT BE HONORED.

That said, incentives and entitlements which are available to everyone won’t be, and don’t need to be in the contract. This is because military members are already entitled to it by law. For example, medical care, base pay, and the Montgomery G.I. Bill won’t be specified in the contract, because these benefits are available to everyone who enlists in the military.

You do, however, need to make sure all of your desired incentives are included in the final active duty contract .

Submit Your Application 4medical Exam

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. The second step is a medical file review to determine any limitations that will affect your training and career.

Guaranteed First Duty Assignment

The Army and the Navy are the only active duty services which can offer a guaranteed first duty assignment. However, since the invasion of Iraq, the Army rarely offers this incentive anymore. When authorized, under the Army Program, you can get a written guarantee in your enlistment contract for your first duty assignment following basic training and job training . This option is only available for certain, hard-to-fill Army Jobs. Additionally, the guarantee is only good for 12 months. After that, the Army can move you anywhere it wants.

The Navy program is a “sort of” guaranteed first duty station. Under the Navy program, you can be guaranteed a first assignment in a designated geographical area. In other words, while the Navy can’t guarantee that you would be assigned to a particular base, they can, for example, guarantee an assignment on the West Coast. However, under the Navy program, there is a catch — the program is not available to those who sign up with a guaranteed rating . It’s only available for those who enlist under the GENDET program. Under the GENDET enlistment program, applicants pick a “general field,” such as “aviation,” rather than a specific rating. Then, following basic training, they spend a year or so at a Navy Base, doing general duties as an “undesignated seaman” before they get to choose their rating and go to job-school.
