What Do You Get Issued At Army Basic Training

Army May Stop Issuing Dress Uniforms To Recruits In Basic Training

What You Get Issued in Army Basic Training (Fort Benning, September 2021)

The U.S. Army is considering issuing the new Army Greens uniform to new soldiers when they go to their first unit, instead of following the tradition of issuing the dress uniform at the beginning of Basic Combat Training.

The service intends to begin issuing the Army Greens — a version of the World War II pinks and greens — in summer 2020, but it may wait until after Initial Entry Training is over to avoid giving new uniforms to soldiers who don’t complete training.

“It boils down to attrition,” said Col. Stephen Thomas, head of Project Manager Soldier Protection & Individual Equipment.

Out of the roughly 110,000 recruits who go to basic training, about 104,000 make it to advanced individual training, he said.

“So then, by the time they go from AIT to their first unit, that number drops down to about 94,000,” Thomas said. “And so, if you do the math, that’s about 16,000 soldiers … that are dropped and so there is an opportunity to realize a cost savings by issuing the uniform to soldiers when they go to their first unit, as opposed to issuing the uniform at basic training.”

Army officials have said the Army Greens will cost more than the current blue Army Service Uniform, or ASU, because it is designed to be higher quality and last six years compared to the ASU’s four-year life.

While no decision has been made, issuing the new uniform to soldiers at their first unit would also benefit drill sergeants, according to Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel Dailey.

    What Is Military Underwear

Newly arrived Soldiers begin red phase at basic combat ...

Military underwear is a set of specially produced undergarments for use in the armed forces. The clothing is issued to members of the military upon entering training, along with the rest of a standard uniform. Two sets of underwear are often issued: one for hot weather, and one for cold. The underwear has specific properties that make it suitable for training and combat.

For warm weather, military underwear is often made of tight, lightweight material, such as cotton. The fit of the garments helps keep the wearer comfortable and prevents bunching or slipping under clothing. The underwear is made from moisture-wicking fabric to assist with heat transfer during sweating and is very breathable. The fabric of the underwear is often treated with an antimicrobial substance to help prevent bacteria outbreaks caused by excessive sweat during hot weather.

Comfort is a primary focus of this underwear. Warm-weather garments are black, brown or olive green and are often made in a boxer-brief style, fitting close to the body and extending to mid-thigh. Some armed forces-issued underwear might be made in a short, briefs style.

    Things You Should Not Bring

Traveling light is your best option, but there are items you do not want on your list when deciding what to bring to Army basic training

Remember, arrival at boot camp is your first chance to show you can follow orders, so plan on having a good start by leaving these items at home.

    • Friends, family, and pets if they did not receive orders to report to boot camp, leave them at home.
    • Nonprescription drugs, alcohol, and tobacco Give yourself enough time to reduce your dependency on tobacco and other substances because you do not want to have these with you when you arrive.
    • Weapons you will have an opportunity to turn in any questionable items without worrying about repercussions, but it is ideal to leave weapons off your pack list.
    • Personal electronics you will find you do not need cellphones, smartwatches, or other electronics. If you bring these items with you, you will receive them back after graduation. However, it is best to leave them at home and arrange to receive them after completion of training. Consider packing a disposable cell phone with enough minutes for emergencies. If something happens to the cell phone, it is not as much of an issue compared to an expensive cell phone.

Fire Guard And Charge Of Quarters

Every night, at least two recruits from the platoon must be awake at any given time. Duties include patrolling their barracks area, watching for fires, cleaning the barracks and watching for recruits attempting to leave the barracks area. They wake the next pair of recruits at the end of their one-hour shift. This duty is called fire guard.

Fire guard stems back to the days of wooden barracks and wood-burning stoves. The fire guard would watch the stoves to make sure that the barracks would not catch fire. Since open flames are not generally used to heat sleeping areas any longer, present-day fire guard duty during Basic Training is more an exercise in discipline than a practical necessity, although if the weather gets cold enough, some groups conducting overnight outdoor training will still use a “pot bellied” stove which must be watched to prevent accidental fires. It is primarily used to ensure accountability of personnel and equipment during the night.

    Training The American Gi

As the United States prepared for war, military leaders had a long list of needsguns, tanks, ships, and equipment of every kind. One of the things they needed most of all, however, was people. In 1939, the US Army only had 174,000 soldiers, including the Army Air Forces. At its peak during the war, the Army grew to over 8 million men and women in uniform, joined by an additional 3.4 million in the Navy. The new additions were mostly young Americans who would normally have been pursuing jobs, schooling, and family life, but instead were answering the nations call to arms. Many of them had never even traveled outside their home state, let alone Europe, Asia, or the Pacific Islands. Preparing these millions of civilians for war would be one of the militarys most daunting challenges.

Soldiers tackle part of an obstacle course at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, 1942.

“It was true we were all volunteers and all of them were young men18, 19 years oldand all of them wanted to prove that they were men and that they were part of the best and that they were the best. That was true. We were.”

New U.S. Army soldiers are expected to operate on little sleep. While in the barracks, recruits sleep is regularly interrupted by drill sergeants conducting inspections, punishing infractions, getting head counts, or waking soldiers for the heck of it. The party continues in the field where soldiers sleep in bags instead of beds.

What Are The Two Ribbons You Get After Army Boot Camp

As of June 2018, when you complete Army boot camp, you receive two service awards, the Army Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal. Boot camp can take from 10 to 16 weeks, depending on the soldier’s MOS or Military Occupation Code. In most instances, promotion from Private, rank E1, to Private Second Class comes after a total of 6 months time in grade . Both the two service awards and promotion to E2 are what the army considers “automatic.” You don’t need to do anything above and beyond the normal call of duty to receive the awards or the promotion that follows. It is possible, however, for an individual’s performance to be so far below the minimally acceptable norm that promotion to E2 isn’t given, and, then, in extreme cases, the individual doesn’t receive the two service awards, because the individual has been discharged before the completion of basic training.

    Criticism Of These Two Awards

The automatic nature of these two service awards has sometimes been criticized. If everyone gets them simply for attending basic training and for not getting booted out, the argument goes, then how is that an award? Writing in Task & Purpose, an unofficial news source devoted to military affairs, Carl Forsling writes that it makes the military seem like a grown-up version of summer camp, “where everyone gets awards just for showing up.”

Though they will brag about these experiences later, all recruits have a training event theyre dreading during basic. Some complain about the night infiltration course where they must crawl across the ground while machine guns are fired over their heads and artillery simulators are thrown nearby. Most complain about the smokings, physical training sessions spread throughout the day to help new soldiers quickly build strength and endurance.

What Gear You Get Issued In The Army (2021)

The U.S. Air and Space Forces’ Basic Military Training is seven and a half weeks long, as they do not count the first week . BMT is 63 calendar days long. It is conducted at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Formerly, trainees were referred to as “Airman” from day one of BMT. This has been changed now, personnel are referred to as Trainees until the Airman’s Coin Ceremony in the eighth week of training, when they receive their Airman’s Coin. Trainees receive military instruction , academic classes , and field training . Following BMT, Airmen/Guardians go to a technical school where they learn the specifics of their Air Force Specialty Code , which is equivalent to the MOS in the Army and Marines, the Navy’s NEC code, or the Coast Guard’s ratings.

All non-prior-service enlistees are required to complete BMT, including those enlisting in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command. Reserve component enlistees receive the same training as their active-duty counterparts. Credit can be given on a case-by-case basis for enlistees with college credit. Eagle Scouts and service in the Civil Air Patrol qualify for promotion to E-2 or E-3 upon graduation from BMT. The stripes are not worn until graduation, though trainees are paid at the higher pay grade.

How To Contact Someone During Basic Training

While phone calls seem like an easy option, theres nothing easy about boot camp. Phone call frequency varies by unit and is at the discretion of the drill sergeants. Soldiers are usually allowed to make a quick call home when they first arrive and another when they are out reception. Dont take it personally that these first few calls are often limited to 30 seconds or so and that youll probably only have time for your soldier to pass along their mailing address.

Your soldier will have the opportunity to earn more phone time as they move through the training process. Calls could come at any time but never after 9 p.m. at their installation.

    Remember Why You Joined

During Basic Military Training, it can be a grind day in and out with the speed and intensity you will experience in physical training, classroom learning, and also lack the right amount of quality sleep. At some point, you will feel low energy, and you may wonder if joining the service was the right thing to do.

Basic Military Training is designed to mold you into the best servicemember you can be. The best thing you can do when times get tough is to connect back to the reason you signed up in the first place.

Often, reflecting on the one or many reasons you join, provides a bolt of energy or a second wind during those challenging times. The next time you are out on a hike, a run, or training for Basic Military Training, practice connecting to those reasons and dig deep. You will be surprised how much farther you can run, and how much further you can go.
