Who Should Join The Coast Guard

If your biggest goal for your future military career is to save lives, join the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is responsible for search and rescue missions, but thats far from all they do. They intercept drug trafficking ships, inspect container ships, work on environmental protection, escort civilian ships with risky cargo, and lots more. Basic training takes eight weeks. During that time, youll have to meet physical fitness standards, plus practice specialized water training, firefighting, and marksmanship. When you graduate, you have a solid chance of being guaranteed a base location, which is a big plus.

Most people join the Coast Guard because they want to be Aviation Survival Technicians, aka rescue swimmers. Being a gunners mate is another popular job, but there are plenty of less adventurous options, too. If you dont mind sitting around keeping watch, operations specialists do that a few days a week for up to 12 hours at a time. Not the most exciting, but much less risky, too.

Pros:

  • You wont be deployed abroad, and deployments are often shorter
  • Youll get to live near the sea, with a lower likelihood of living on a ship for months on end
  • You have a chance at choosing your base
  • Its a smaller branch, so youll be able to get to know people really well

Cons:

  • Its tougher to get in because its such a small branch.
  • Quarters on board are often cramped
  • Certain Coast Guard jobs are surprisingly dangerous

Cool Jobs In The Air Force

The obvious first choice for everyone here is easy: pilot.

However, with only 1,100 pilot slots available every year, competition can be stiff.

You should also keep in mind that 500 550 of those pilot slots are reserved for Air Force Academy graduates, and 350 450 spots are reserved for ROTC members.

As a result, your prospects of landing a pilot slot are very low.

With that said, there are a wide variety of great jobs in the Air Force that dont involve piercing through the sky at Mach 1.

Some of the best jobs in the Air Force include things like:

  • Logistics planner

If youre 100% set on becoming a pilot, then you should consider going the Air National Guard route.

Air Force National Guard units are essentially the military reserve force, as well as the militia Air Force, of each state.

They fly all of the same aircraft that the regular full-time Air Force does F-16s, F-15s, A-10s, and even large cargo planes like the C5 Galaxy.

The upside is, theres no full-time commitment.

You still have to go to basic training, but youll only serve in a part-time role.

Which Military Branch Has The Best Pay And Benefits

by MilitaryBenefits

If youre considering a military career, you might wonder which military service Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or Space Force has the best pay and benefits.

At a basic pay level, the answer is simple. The military pays the same regardless of branch, according to your pay grade and years of service. Your rank determines your pay grade. Ranks vary across military services, but pay grades do not.

There is also no fundamental advantage in joining one service over the other in terms of which benefits youll receive.

Our military pay calculator shows how much you would make in any branch of the military according to your pay grade and years of service. You can also view your basic allowance for housing by entering a ZIP code.

While basic pay and allowances are the same across military services, some incentive pays and bonuses might vary. However, this is primarily due to your career field, not your branch of service. Your career field is also a major determining factor in promotion rates.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Military Branch To Join

In the early 1980s I was a troubling-making teen growing up preoccupied with cars, girls and partying. My grades in high school were awful and my motivation for things that required effort was pretty low. I was just out for a good time.

Sometime during my senior year in high school, a good friend told me that he was enlisting in the U.S. Army. Joining the military seemed like a good idea to me, a kid with few options who was ranked almost last in his graduating high school class.

Near my home there was an Armed Forces recruiting center and every branch of service had an office there. I went to the recruiting center and I visited my friends Army recruiter first. I didnt need to be convinced. I needed some type of life after high school and this seemed like a way out for me. I knew I wanted to join the military because my friend had given me the sales pitch about steady money, free meals and healthcare.

Let me be honest. I did not go to the military recruiters because I had always wanted to serve and certainly not because I was a patriot. I wanted to enlist because I had no options that interested me. The one thing I knew was that I needed to leave home and start my life.

The meeting with the Army recruiter went well, but for some reason, it didnt hit the right note for me. That night, I asked myself, which branch of the military should I join as I laid in bed? I didnt really know a lot about the services, so I figured I could check them all out.

Hey, Im Gerry.

Do Any Services Have Higher Allowances

No. Allowances are the same in all six branches of service. This includes BAS, COLA and BAH.

BAH is the only allowance that may vary. However, since DOD specifically calculates BAH to offset housing costs, you wont have a relative advantage to your income by living in a higher BAH area since your housing cost will also be higher.

In the Navy, for example, you might live coastally, which tends to have higher BAH rates, but your housing costs will likely absorb this extra money not your bank account.

    Cool Jobs In The Marines

Which Military Branch Should I Join?

Like the Navy, jobs in the marines are divided up into MOS, or military occupation codes.

Just like with the other branches, your job will completely depend on what your ASVAB score is.

A lot of guys that sign up for the Marines sign up for one job only: Infantryman.

This is the most common job in the Marines, and puts you on the front lines of most foreign conflicts.

With that said, there are plenty of other job opportunities in the Marines.

Some of the more rewarding and marketable ones include:

As I mentioned earlier, most Marine recruits sign up for the infantry.

But its always a good option to keep your eyes peeled for jobs like the ones above, especially if youre considering your options after enlistment.

    Air Force Basic Training

As with other branches, Air Force Basic Training is a full-time effort to develop a higher physical condition while learning the standards of the Air Force and the tasks important to any role in this part of the military. People often find that this period, which lasts about nine weeks, provides them with a lot of information and opportunities to practice. This training is shorter than other branches, which means as much as possible is packed in from the beginning.

Initially, participants start to refine their physical abilities. They also complete the basic procedures necessary to be a part of the Air Force, like medical appointments and vaccinations. As the weeks progress, they learn more about the branchs standard operating procedures. Once they have started to build their endurance, they learn how to operate weapons and get ready for combat. By the end, they are ready to take their final tests and get ready to relocate.

People find it helpful if they spend some time preparing for the work they will do in basic training before they get an official date. Many prospective soldiers focus on physical activities such as their ability to run a mile in less than ten minutes or perform a higher number of push-ups or sit-ups. It is also important for them to consider the mental and psychological aspects. People may want to read the Uniform Code of Military Justice, reporting and saluting procedures, and work on retaining information over time.

    What Happens After The Meps

After finishing at the MEPS, recruits follow one of two options:

    • “Direct Ship:” Departure for Basic Training occurs in a matter of days versus months.
    • Delayed Entry Program : Commit to Basic Training at a time in the future, generally within one year. Recruits entering the DEP are given further instruction, to be followed at a later time.

It’s important to note that the time between being “sworn in” and Basic Training could be as short as two days or as long as a year. It also varies based on job assignment and branch of Service.

Whats A Typical Day In The Air Force Like

This is actually one of the hardest branches of the military to describe the day-to-day activities of.

Its heavily contingent upon what job you have, and where youre based.

The jobs are so varied, that there isnt really anything typical.

With that said, generally speaking most jobs in the Air Force follow a very civilian-like regiment.

Since were talking about the Air Force, it would make sense to describe what a typical day might look like for one of the most important jobs: Fighter Pilot.

Heres what it might look like:

0430 0600: Wake up, eat breakfast, get showered and dressed

0600 0830: Mission scheduling and planning. Youll go over the flights for the week, the objectives, airspace boundaries, communications, flight routes, and much more.

0830 1000: Flight briefing. Here youll discuss the intricacies of the flight with the other pilots. Everything from the types of weapons youll be carrying, how they should be dropped, and tactical events will be scrutinized and meticulously gone over.

1000 1030: Head to life support. Here youll suit up for the mission, donning your G-suit, harnesses, equipment, and prepare your helmet.

1030 1100: Head to the Aircraft / perform pre flight.

1100 1130: Engine start, weapons armed, flight check in, and taxi.

1130 1300: Sortie takes place. This will vary widely, and could be anything from dog-fighting, to bombing training targets on the ground.

1330 1400: Back to life support to strip down out of your gear.

What Career Fields Have The Best Bonuses

In all military branches, the career fields that pay the highest bonuses or even any bonus at all can literally change daily. Talk to your recruiter or reenlistment counselor to find out which occupations offer the best bonuses and match your interests, skills and aptitudes.

While the DOD prescribes maximums for S& I pay, individual services determine the actual rates. Some incentives, like foreign language pay, are the same across all services. Others, like enlistment bonuses, may vary by branch and component. For example, if one states National Guard is having trouble retaining service members, it may offer a higher reenlistment bonus than active duty or even other states.

    Refrigeration And Air Conditioning Technician

Another job that isnt necessarily a favorite in the Marines is Refrigeration and A/C Technician.

Again, most join the Marines to get in the fight, not fix a broken refrigerator.

Instead of doing the cool stuff like shooting off mortars or firing a 50 cal. machine gun, youll be squatting underneath an air handler in 95 degree heat.

Keep in mind that while both of these jobs are generally hated in the Marines, it can set you up for a really good career when you get out.

I cant stress how important this is enough!

    How Do They Do This

Which Branch of the Military Should I Join?

The many training bases the Army runs provide the necessary skills and education a soldier needs to be prepared for combat. They also allow the Army to rapidly increase its numbers in times of war.

The various battalions, brigades, divisions, and corps are trained to achieve fast and sustainable land supremacy via an assortment of military operations.

They are the largest branch of the military at roughly double the Marine Corps. A fair amount of educational opportunities are available, and there are many different MOSs on offer.
