ASVAB test scores determine occupational choices for military recruits. Higher test scores qualify people to train for positions that could pay more.

The military uses codes to describe different occupations. The U.S. Army and Marine Corps apply military occupational codes, or MOS, to various jobs. The U.S. Navy uses the term NEC for navy classification codes. For the U.S. Air Force, its the AFSC for air force specialty code.

Each code describes a specific occupation. Although the military pays everyone according to their rank and years of service, MOS, NEC, or AFSC for demanding positions authorize extra payments. When it comes to the highest-paying jobs in the military and its generous bonuses, who gets extra pay is subject to change. Military branches reward occupations that they need the most and these needs could shift over time.

      The Army Is Offering Two

That task is made even more complicated by the budget uncertainty facing the Army.

As of Feb. 14, the Army has enlisted 20,600 recruits this fiscal year, according to USAREC. In total, the service is at about 53 percent of its total plus-up goal for the year, Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey said.

The next step is for Congress to pass an appropriations bill with a budget to match the new end-strength numbers.

Dailey said he was confident that the Army would get enough money in this year’s budget to properly train and equip the influx of new soldiers and pay for the bonuses the Army is promising to soldiers old and new.

“We’re going to go back and ask for more money,” Dailey said.

He added that senior Army leaders have long sounded the alarm about how much the Army was shrinking.

“For the last several years, we’ve been talking about the risk with the size of our force,” Dailey said. ” has made it very clear that he’s uncomfortable with our risk. We’ve been communicating with Congress that we need to increase end strength.”

But numbers aren’t everything, he said.

“We need the resources to accomplish the missions we have at hand,” he said, including everything from obligations to combatant commanders in the Pacific, Europe, Middle East and beyond, down to benefits and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs at home that provide a high quality of life for soldiers.

      Taxes On Your Military Bonus

Military pay is subject to federal tax in ways that are defined by federal law. Your regular pay is taxable in the same way that other income is taxed. Keep in mind, you wont be charged federal tax on your earnings if you earn that income in a combat zone or under other circumstances that make the income tax-exempt.

You will need to indicate on your tax forms that you were indeed earning money under conditions deemed exempt from federal taxation, and you will also need to provide supporting documentation such as orders or other proof of your deployment.

Military bonuses are subject to taxation at the time of payment. Past rules issued by the Internal Revenue Service required the Defense Accounting And Finance Service to withhold 25% of that bonus on payment.

In the case of a non-combat zone military bonus pay or others subject to a no tax clause, you are taxed upfront when the bonus is paid.
