The Army Is Rolling Out A New Fitness Test: Will It Hold Back Women

What you need to know about the Army’s new PT test

An Army initiative to create a stronger, fitter fighting force has yielded a dramatic gender gap, raising questions about whether the service might unintentionally compound barriers for women trying to move up the ranks.

Recent Army figures show that 54percent of female soldiers failed the new Army Combat Fitness Test , which is being rolled out on a provisional basis, compared with 7percent of men during the second quarter of 2020.

That reflects a significant improvement over last year, when leaked data showed that over 80percent of a smaller cohort of female test-takers failed the six-event exam. But some women fear they wont be able to pass even with additional training or will continue to score lower than men, potentially affecting their career prospects in an institution already struggling to shed historical gender and racial disparities.

The test, which will become the services official fitness test next month, has prompted a broader debate over whether the services focus on fitness and strength will elevate physical prowess over other qualities, such as effective and ethical leadership, or make it harder to retain troops with skills needed in an era of high-tech military competition.

Officials also say the test may be modified before results are incorporated into soldiers evaluations, likely in 2022, when it could begin to affect promotions and future assignments.

Youre not going to have a lot of females make it to the top, she said.

Defenders Of The New Test

Some female troops say they believe that more rigorous standards are overdue, especially for career fields that are the most physically demanding, such as infantry.

One female soldier said the previous version was too easy. While she failed the test last fall and still cant do a leg tuck, she has been using a pullup assist machine to train and said shes close.

If youre serious about staying in the military, youve got to work on it, she said.

But for those who cant meet the minimum standard or who pass but score significantly lower than men, the test could affect their careers. That could occur most directly for enlisted personnel, whose fitness scores have long counted toward their promotion via a points system. Army officials say it has not been decided whether the new test will be used in the same way for enlisted personnel once it is finalized.

For commissioned officers, physical fitness scores arent formally used by promotion boards. But soldiers say the results can be taken into account informally when officers are being considered for coveted roles, such as place in the 82nd Airborne Division, that are more likely to open career paths leading to the most senior ranks.

They would absolutely want to know if Im a PT stud and if I can keep up. And if the answer is, Well, she passes, that is not the answer theyre looking for, the female officer said. For officers, she said, its way more subtle.

The reasoning behind these fitness requirements is the Army’s desire to ensure all soldiers and officers are physically fit and prepared for active duty. In the field, Army officers may need to run distances or carry heavy equipment and comrades.

The ACFT, whose rollout has been complicated, is one visible manifestation of the militarys push to increase lethality across the force, which has become a hallmark at the Pentagon in recent years.

Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper, who served as Army secretary until 2019, has championed the test. A physical training or military PT enthusiast, Esper has often joined troops for their early-morning fitness sessions when visiting military facilities across the country.

If you cant pass the Army Combat Fitness Test, then theres probably not a spot for you in the Army, he said after plans for it were unveiled in 2018.

More importantly, officials say, nearly 20 years of insurgent warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan revealed a mismatch between the Armys previous way of training for and testing physical fitness and the realities of modern combat. That disconnect resulted in frequent injuries, which were costly for individual service members and the military.

Army officials say the new test, the product of seven years of work by a team of Army officials and scientists at the CIMT, is designed to simulate aspects of combat, such as dodging enemy fire or dragging a wounded comrade across a field. Those tasks are important not just for soldiers dispatched to the front lines but also for support troops who may also come under attack.

The vast majority of soldiers have now taken the test at least once.

I could do enough to be in the Army but not enough to be an engineer, she said.

What Are The Army’s New Physical Employment Standards

Physical Employment Standards ensure that Army personnel have the physical ability for their role so they can safely and satisfactorily complete essential tasks. Additionally, they help to reduce the risk of Muscular Skeletal Injury to both Service men and women.

When will the new standards come in to effect?

  • Ground Close Combat . The new standards will come into effect for all Ground Close Combat roles from April 1st 2019.
  • Non-Ground Close Combat . New standards for non-GCC roles will be implemented 2021/22. In the interim, non-GCC personnel will continue to complete the current Annual Fitness Test.

Solving The Acft Leg Tuck

I dont even know how to explain this without a flowchart, but I am a professional and will give it a go. Previously, the ACFT mandated a testing event called a leg tuck to determine the core strength of a soldier. The problem: 72% of women were failing it. The solution TRADOC has provided: Soldiers can perform a plank as an alternative to the leg tuck. That seems fair, but

According to a letter sent out by the Sergeant Major of the Army: Each Soldier will indicate which core strength test event they will do before the test begins. The reason we are keeping the Leg Tuck, and adding the Plank, is that the Leg Tuck is a better correlation to fitness requirements for Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills and Soldier common tasks. By making the Plank a fully graded, alternate assessment, we are working to give Soldiers who are currently struggling with the Leg Tuck, a chance to succeed on the ACFT, while adapting their physical readiness training to the Armys changing culture of fitness.

So which is it? Are we designing a test to give absolute, rock solid evidence of a soldiers fitness for modern warfare, or are we just making things up? Because its a binary situation. If WTBD proficiencythings like movement under fire, evacuating casualties, and so onis a necessary prerequisite for modern warfare , then why are you yielding on leg tucks?

I Am A New Recruit How Do I Physically Prepare For Pft In Basic Training

The best source of fitness prep information prior to basic training, regardless of military service, is your recruiter. The recruiter has the latest information on PFT requirements, safely preparing for the rigors of Basic Training, and avoiding injury while doing so.

After youve taken the ASVAB, talk to your recruiter as early as possible about how to physically get ready for your new military career. Its best to avoid potentially old or outdated information on third party websites that offer specific advice on how to prepare at a minimum, you should consult the official website for your branch of service to see whats presented there as the current PFT standard.

Faq Army Apft Standards

Army APFT standards are divided by gender as well as age.

In order to complete Basic Training, you need to score at least 50 points in each event for your age demographic.

Those that fail to reach 50 points in each event are still allowed to continue basic training, however, they must pass the Army Physical Fitness Test by the end of basic training.

Its a little different from Navy PRT standards which will immediately send home new recruits that fail to pass the physical fitness requirements.

Minimum Marines Physical Fitness Requirements

The Marines physical fitness requirements vary slightly by age, earning points after a minimum is met. The minimum standards are as follows:

1. Pull-ups or Push-ups

Mens Pull-ups Minimum by Age17-20: 4

51+: 40

3. Planking

As of Jan. 1, 2020, Marines have been able to replace crunches with the plank pose. Practice getting a five-minute plank post to max the test.

4. Timed 3-mile Run

Men: 3-mile run in 28 minutes or less.Women: 3-mile run in 31 minutes or less.

Is Army Ocs Physically Harder Than Basic Training

Army Officer Candidate School is more challenging compared to Basic Combat Training .

While both training courses push you to the limits in terms of physical fitness, there is more stress on leadership qualities at OCS.

Army OCS candidates are constantly evaluated for their leadership characteristics in addition to physical fitness and tactical skills.

The program is also slightly longer .

The Army purposely makes OCS more difficult compared to basic training.

It prepares high-ranking officers, those that will make difficult decisions out in the field later on down the road.

How Are Future Officers Evaluated

The United States Army requires several steps to become a commissioned officer.

First, you need to enlist in the U.S. Army like any new recruit.

The Army has basic guidelines you need to meet like proving youre a U.S. citizen and passing a medical exam.

The Armed Forces require that recruits arrive in shape and able to meet basic physical fitness standards.

Army OCS applicants must also complete the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery like all other recruits.

The series of tests allows the military branch to assess your mental competence.

Prospective officers need to score General Technical : 110 or higher on the ASVAB to stay considered for the prestigious Officer Candidate School.

Furthermore, recruits need to pass the Army Occupational Physical Assessment Test .

The Army guarantees enrollment in Officer Candidate School for non-prior service applicants after completing basic training.

Meanwhile, prior service applicants may go directly to Army OCS, therefore, skipping basic training.

How Do I Prepare For Military Fitness Testing

Each branch of the service has unique advice for getting physically ready for that version of the fitness test. Marines have it the hardest, running three miles, doing pull-ups and crunches within the span of a two-hour evaluation period.

The Army has its troops run two miles, plus two minutes of pushups and situps. There are similar requirements for the Navy, the Air Force, and the Coast Guard.

Each branch of the service will tell service members the same thing with regard to passing the fitness test-you cannot cram for this test by attempting to hurriedly get into acceptable physical condition at the last minute. Remember, your height and weight are measured in addition to your ability to physically endure the test.

Fitness is a lifestyle, and those who have neglected physical activity prior to enlisting, or prior to taking the annual or semi-annual fitness test will definitely struggle to meet the standards. Consult your unit First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, supervisor, or orderly room to get information on the fitness standards of your branch of service and advice on how to prepare for PFT.

All Soldiers must be sold upon the necessity of being in excellent physical condition. The leader must convince the men that a high level of fitness will give them a much better chance to survive in combat situations. When troops realize their efforts are an investment in their own personal welfare it is not difficult to secure their whole-hearted cooperation. Army Regulation 20-21

In America, one out of every three adults is considered obese. This isnt just a personal problem its a national crisis. Estimates show that 75 percent of 17 to 24 year olds are ineligible to join the military, and more than half of those are due to health problems and a lack of physical fitness.

The problem has even moved into our militarys ranks. A study conducted in 2018 shows that 66 percent of service members are considered to be either overweight or obese. With that sobering statistic in mind, what standards are soldiers being held to?

The U.S. Army first introduced Physical Training AR 21-10 in March 1941 when World War II was still raging. After a few minor changes, an updated version was released in January 1946.

The regulation used a total fitness concept to plan and conduct physical fitness training, emphasizing strength, endurance, agility, and coordination.

The physical fitness test included a series of events that were conducted one after another with little or no break between events.
