Coast Guard Physical Test Requirements

Members of the Coast Guard must take physical fitness assessments as part of their training and job requirements.

The key factors determining physical fitness in Coast Guardsmen are:

  • Aerobic capacity
  • Muscular endurance

Aerobic capacity is an indicator of cardiovascular fitness.

This component is considered most related to health as well as the ability to perform vigorous and/or sustained physical activity.

The Coast Guards Physical Fitness Assessment consists of the following tests:

  • Push-ups: This is a one-minute test in which members must do as many push-ups with proper technique as possible. The minimum standard for men is 29 and for women is 15.
  • Sit-ups: This is a one-minute test in which members must do as many sit-ups with proper technique as possible. The minimum requirement for men is 38 and for women is 32.
  • 5-mile run: This is a timed run with a distance of 1.5 miles on level ground. Men must complete the run no slower than 12:51 minutes and for women no slower than 15:26 minutes.
  • Swim circuit: In this test, participants must jump from a 1.5-meter platform into water and swim 100 meters without assistance.

The Coast Guard PFA may also require members to take a treading water test and/or perform a Sit and Reach exercise.

The Sit and Reach exercise is a flexibility test in which men must meet a standard reach of 16.5 inches and women must reach 19.29 inches.

These screenings and assessments are designed to ensure health and fitness for Coast Guardsmen.

The Impact On The Health Care System

Another way to assess the impact of body-fat standards on the military is to estimate their cost to the health care system. In 1998, according to the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database , active duty personnel made 9.1 million visits to ambulatory care clinics. Just over 40,000 of those visits were for a primary diagnosis of obesity or localized adiposity. An additional 2,700 visits were for a primary diagnosis of anorexia,bulimia, or other eating disorder. That is, less than one-half of 1 percent of all ambulatory visits made by active duty personnel were recorded as being primarily for concerns about body weight, body composition, or dysfunctional weight-loss practices. A different approach was reported by Robbins and colleagues , who examined anthropometrics, demographics, and health behaviors of 4,974 active duty Air Force men and women. This analysis found that more than 20 percent exceeded their maximum allowable weights and that this was associated with an increased cost of $22.8 million per year for medical care and lost workdays . Unfortunately, the statistics on visits to military clinics for weight-related matters do not provide a complete picture. Military personnel are likely to enroll in commercial weight-reduction programs or to self-treat with supplements or over-the-counter medications rather than call attention to their weight, which invites possible disciplinary action or separation from the service with loss of benefits.

Faq Army Apft Standards

Army APFT standards are divided by gender as well as age.

In order to complete Basic Training, you need to score at least 50 points in each event for your age demographic.

Those that fail to reach 50 points in each event are still allowed to continue basic training, however, they must pass the Army Physical Fitness Test by the end of basic training.

Its a little different from Navy PRT standards which will immediately send home new recruits that fail to pass the physical fitness requirements.

United States Army Physical Fitness Test

The Army Physical Fitness Test was designed to test the muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular respiratory fitness of soldiers in the United States Army. Soldiers were scored based on their performance in three events consisting of the push-up, sit-up, and a two-mile run, ranging from 0 to 100 points in each event. A minimum score of 60 in each event was required to pass the test. The soldier’s overall score was the sum of the points from the three events. If a soldier passed all three events, the total could have range from 180 to 300.

The APFT is timed as follows:

  • 2 minutes of pushups
  • 2 minutes of situps
  • 2-mile run

Active component and Active Guard Reserve component Soldiers were required to take a “record” APFT at least twice each calendar year. Army Reservists and National Guard Soldiers were required to take a “record” test once per calendar year. Army Regulation 3501 stated that record APFTs for TPU Soldiers must be separated by eight months this does not change, regardless of their duty status, i.e., active duty , annual training, etc. Army reservist and national guardsmen components do not change upon deployment or entering active duty status. National Guard Physical Fitness Standards

Armed Forces Fitness Requirements

To join the National Guard, you will need to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test with scores that fall within the accepted range of fitness standards for your gender, weight and height. The Physical Fitness Test consists of three aspects: push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile run. If you do not meet the initial body fat, height and weight standards, you will not be allowed to take the test.

Minimum Marines Physical Fitness Requirements

The Marines physical fitness requirements vary slightly by age, earning points after a minimum is met. The minimum standards are as follows:

1. Pull-ups or Push-ups

Mens Pull-ups Minimum by Age17-20: 4

51+: 40

3. Planking

As of Jan. 1, 2020, Marines have been able to replace crunches with the plank pose. Practice getting a five-minute plank post to max the test.

4. Timed 3-mile Run

Men: 3-mile run in 28 minutes or less.Women: 3-mile run in 31 minutes or less.

Where Does Basic Training Take Place

For all full-time regular force candidates, basic training takes place at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

All part-time candidates joining their local Primary Reserve unit will undergo similar basic training objectives. Reserve units will conduct their Basic Training either at the local reserve unit location or at a Canadian Armed Forces training centre. Locations vary depending on units. Navy Physical Fitness Requirements

Army Physical Fitness Test Standards

To join the Navys ranks, youd need to complete a swim test, a body composition assessment, and the Navy Physical Readiness Test .

According to the Navy PRT Guide, this physical fitness test evaluates aerobic capacity, or cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance.

The requirements to pass the PRT at Navy boot camp include sit-ups, push-ups, and a run. These are based on age and gender and include the following:

Men entering Naval Service ages 17-19

  • 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
  • 42 pushups in 2 minutes
  • 5 mile run in 12:30

Women entering Naval Service ages 17-19

  • 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
  • 19 pushups in 2 minutes
  • 5 mile run in 15:30

Additionally, the Navy has whats known as the Navy Third Class Swim Test, taken during boot camp. The swim test consists of:

  • A 5-foot minimum jump into a pool thats at least 8 feet deep
  • A 50-yard swim without stopping, standing, or holding on to the sides of the pool
  • A 5-minute prone float

And just in case you want to be a Navy SEAL, youd need to complete the following:

  • 500-yard swim within 12 minutes, 30 seconds
  • 42 push-ups in two minutes
  • 52 sit-ups in two minutes
  • 8 pull-ups without touching the ground or letting go of the bar
  • 5-mile run in 11 minutes, 30 seconds

WASHINGTON For 99 percent of Americans, this question will never come up in a job interview: Can you hang from a bar and tuck your legs to your chest?

It has, however, become a central issue for the Army, where fitness levels of recruits have come under greater scrutiny over the past two decades, precisely the same time that women have been seeking entry into elite combat units and advancement in leadership roles.

Now, the Army is racing to approve significant changes to its legendary physical fitness test, the first revision since 1980, which will include offering soldiers an alternative to the leg tuck, a flash point for women, especially those who have given birth.

At the same time, the new version of the test, which is required twice a year, does away with separate scoring curves based on gender and age. In its earliest rollout among 14,000 soldiers, 65 percent of a small set of women failed the new test, while 10 percent of men did.

Across the force, troops and their commanders know that major changes to these requirements would amount to a significant cultural shift for the fitness-obsessed force.

Army Physical Fitness Requirements

According to the official Army website, the definition of physical fitness is, The ability to function effectively in physical work, training, and other activities, while still having enough energy left over to handle any emergencies that may arise.

The past Army Physical Fitness Test consisted of push-ups, sit-ups, and a two-mile run. In October 2020, the Army switched to the new Army Combat Fitness Test which consists of the following six events:

  • Strength deadlift: You must perform a three-repetition deadlift, with the weight increased with each repetition. The weight range of the deadlift is 120 to 420 pounds. The deadlifts replicate picking up ammunition boxes, a wounded soldier, supplies or heavy equipment.
  • Standing power throw: You will need to toss a 10-pound ball backward as far as possible to test the muscular explosive power that may be needed to lift yourself or a fellow soldier over an obstacle or to move rapidly across uneven terrain.
  • Hand-release pushups: You will have two minutes to do as many hand-release pushups as possible. There may be a minimum number to complete due to your job. These are like traditional pushups, but at the down position, you lift your hands and arms from the ground and then reset to do another pushup.
  • Leg tuck: Similar to a pull-up, you must lift your legs up and down to touch your knees/thighs to your elbows between one and five times. This exercise strengthens the core muscles.

    Army to Introduce New Fitness Test in 2020

    WASHINGTON After three years of complaints and debate, the Army has scrapped its move to have a physical fitness test that is gender- and age-neutral, and will now allow women and older soldiers to pass while meeting some reduced standards.

    The decision comes after a study by the RAND research organization confirmed that men were passing the new six-event fitness test at a much higher rate than women and that older soldiers were also struggling with their scores in the expanded, more difficult test developed in 2019.

    The change, however, will affect only the regular fitness test that soldiers take annually. Qualifying for certain Army jobs, particularly more demanding combat positions or specialties such as Ranger school, will continue to require that everyone regardless of age or gender must pass the same fitness tests and standards.

    The Army revamped the fitness test three years ago, going from three events pushups, situps and a run to a more difficult and complicated combination of six events. Those six are a dead lift, power throw, pushups, plank, run and a combination sprint/drag/carry. A leg tuck was included early on but has been eliminated.

  • The new program also brings the Army back in line with the other military services, which have varying fitness tests, but all use tiered event requirements based on age and gender.

    Air Force Physical Test Requirements

    Like the Army and Navy, the Air Force also requires members to meet and maintain standards of physical fitness.

    Beginning in early 2022, the Air Force is implementing options for its physical fitness test so members can select the exercises they prefer.

    The three categories of fitness testing are:

    • Aerobic exercise
    • Core strength
    • Upper body strength.

    Previously, the physical test for this branch featured a maximum of 60 points for performance on a 1.5-mile run.

    Twenty points was the maximum awarded for body composition.

    Ten points was the maximum score for muscular fitness, consisting of one-minute tests each for push-ups and sit-ups.

    Army Combat Fitness Test

    The Army Combat Fitness Test is the Armys current physical fitness test, replacing the Army Physical Fitness Test. The ACFT features six components which represent everything from muscular strength and power to flexibility and coordination. Soldiers earn points for meeting and exceeding each tasks minimum requirements. The components are:

    1. 3 Repetition Maximum Deadlift

    What is a good score on the ACFT?

    A minimum passing score for each ACFT event is 60 points, for a total score of 360 for all six events. The required minimum score is the same for all Soldiers, regardless of career field.

    What if I can’t complete the ACFT due to a medical condition?

    After you join, if a permanent medical condition prevents you from completing the ACFT, there are alternate events you can do for your assessment, like walking or swimming instead of the two-mile run. For temporary medical conditions, you can use alternate events to train. But you wont take the scored ACFT until youre medically cleared.

    What happens if I dont pass the ACFT?

    If you dont pass a recorded-score ACFT, the Army will provide you with support and training to improve your score, and youll have a chance to retake the ACFT. If you dont pass two consecutive recorded-score ACFTs, you may be involuntarily separated from the Army.

    All soldiers in Active Duty, Army National Guard and Army Reserves are required to take the APFT.

    Air Force Physical Requirements

    The Air Force Physical Fitness Testwhich the service overhauled in 2013requires the following exercises: push-ups for one minute, sit-ups for one minute, and a 1.5-mile timed run. Though the Air Force calls their abdominal exercise “sit-ups,” they are actually crunches, if you define sit-ups as placing inter-locked hands behind your head. The Air Force sit-up is the same exercise as the Navy crunch.
