What To Know About Navy Basic Training
The Navy only has one location for enlisted basic training: the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. All new recruits will spend boot camp here, but don’t worry about doing drills in inclement weather unlike the other branches of the U.S. military, most of Navy boot camp is conducted indoors.
This means there are indoor marching and drill, the confidence course is indoors and even weapons like shotguns and pistols are fired indoors. This makes a lot of sense if you think about it: much of Navy life and duty is spent aboard a ship or in a submarine.
The Recruit Training Command processes more than 50,000 recruits through Navy boot camp per year.
But before you can take part in Navy basic training, you must pass an initial fitness assessment. Your recruiter administers this test. The initial standards are listed below.
Why The Navy Physical Readiness Test
Navy literature includes complaints that much training time is lost because prospective Sailors arrive at boot-camp without the minimum level of strength and endurance.
New recruits are urged by Navy recruiters to enter into a physical fitness program prior to shipping out for basic training, but these programs are voluntary. That includes those who are enrolled in a Delayed Enlistment program . DEPers, as they are often called, must ensure they are physically ready for boot camp, but they will not be forced by the Navy to participate in formal diets, exercise plans, etc.
Navy recruiting pamphlets remind recruits that all new arrivals to boot camp are required to complete an initial 1.5-mile run. Failure to pass the run means getting retested in 48 hours but in cases where a retest is also failed the recruit is discharged with an entry-level separation which is a non-punitive discharge, but final.
The standards for passing that initial 1.5 mile run?
- Male recruits: Complete the run in 16 minutes, 10 seconds or better
- Female recruits: Complete the run in 18 minutes 37 seconds or less
Keep in mind that this PRT and its standards are NOT those for the Navy Physical Readiness Test. Well cover those requirements below. The 1.5-mile initial run is meant to screen new recruits for further attention regarding fitness requirements but does NOT represent the entire PRT.

Navy Gears Up For Single Physical Fitness Assessment Cycle And Scored Planks In 2022
The Navy has announced that it will complete one physical fitness assessment cycle in 2022 a departure from the traditional two cycles conducted annually and will start scoring forearm planks.
The Navy attributed the single cycle to the COVID-19 pandemic and to delays in the rollout of the Physical Readiness Information Management System 2, which commanders will use to record physical readiness test scores.
Recognizing the foreseeable conditions to include continued pandemic, PRIMS-2 rollout and modality validation, there will be a single PFA cycle for calendar year 2022, a new naval administrative message said. All medically cleared Sailors must participate in the CY2022 Physical Fitness Assessment cycle.
The 2022 PFA cycle will be conducted from April 1 to Sept. 30.
A key change sailors can expect for the 2022 PFA cycle is that the plank scores will count for the first time. Although planks were included in the 2021 PFA cycle, that was for recording purposes only and they were not factored into the overall score, the Navy said.
That means that sailors in 2022 will receive scores for forearm planks, pushups and cardio events including a 2,000-meter row that was introduced in 2021 as an option for sailors.
The Navy previously unveiled its standards for the forearm plank and the rowing events in November 2020.

Passing The Navy Swim Test

During the first week of basic training, you will also have to pass a Navy 3rd Class Swim Test. If you can’t swim, don’t worry. The Navy instructors will teach you how . Obviously, this is going to be a crucial skill to have in a branch of the service where you’re likely to see a fair amount of time at sea.
In order to graduate from Navy basic training, you must score at least a “Good ” score on the normal Navy Physical Readiness Test . For men age 17 through 19, that means 62 sit-ups, 51 push-ups and running 1.5 miles in 11 minutes. For women in this age bracket, they’ll need to do 62 sit-ups, 24 push-ups and 1.5 miles in 13 minutes, 30 seconds.

The jobs performed by those serving in the Navy Reserve are neither less strenuous nor less necessary than those on active Navy duty. The only difference is that reservists serve one weekend a month and two weeks a year, and active duty sailors work full-time. It follows then that physical fitness requirements for all Navy staff are the same, whether theyre on active duty or in the Reserve.
Occupational Physical Assessment Test
After Basic Combat Training, the soldiers will be tasked to take the Occupational Physical Assessment Test, which will determine how physically demanding the job training can be for the new soldier.

Strength DeadliftThe strength deadlift is the standard lift of weight from the floor to a standing position. You start at 120 pounds and build up to 220 pounds.
Interval Run This is a short distance interval run designed to assess aerobic capacity. The intervals are only 20 minutes apart and you start each 20-minute run on the sound of “beeps” at intervals that decrease with time.

The Third Class Swim Test
During the early phases of boot camp, participants are given the third class swim test to analyze their abilities in this area of fitness. The navy requires a swim test while other military branches do not because naval recruits spend the majority of their time on the water. Enlistees need to have heightened water stamina to deal with this reality.
The navy requires that its participants be third-class swimmers, which means that they can float to survive in water without a floater device if they need to wait for rescue a vital skill for naval personnel to have.
The third class swim test includes:
Jump into the water from a distance of 5 feet and swim to the surface by themselves
Swimming 50 yards without stopping
Floating without a device for 5 minutes straight
Continuing through the naval ranks requires more swim tests in the future, but these are the first to be completed in boot camp.

Air Force Physical Requirements
The Air Force Physical Fitness Testwhich the service overhauled in 2013requires the following exercises: push-ups for one minute, sit-ups for one minute, and a 1.5-mile timed run. Though the Air Force calls their abdominal exercise “sit-ups,” they are actually crunches, if you define sit-ups as placing inter-locked hands behind your head. The Air Force sit-up is the same exercise as the Navy crunch.
How The Navy Prt Is Scored

A participants scoring on the Navy PRT test is found by calculating the average of their scores in each event. Each event has a score correlated to the number of sit-ups, push-ups, or the 1.5-mile run time they had.
The scores of each fitness test category are added together and divided by three to arrive at their overall PRT score.
Based on the value of their score, their abilities are ranked as either:
Satisfactory
Excellent
Outstanding
Within each of these rankings, the enlistee or sailor also falls into a distinction of being high, medium, or low performing.
To pass the Navy Physical Readiness Test and graduate, their score must average at least 60, which is a ranking of Good and a performance of low.
For the bi-yearly PRT check-ins for sailors, the minimum requirement is an average score of 50 or a ranking of Satisfactory at medium level.

Preparing For The Navy Prt
For the 1.5 mile run, training is key. If you are not currently a runner begin by walking the correct mileage and increasing your speed daily. Moving from walking to jogging to running takes determination and stamina. By doing these activities 4 to 5 times a week will increase your ability to ace the 1.5 mile run each test cycle.
Each element of the PRT is scored and given equal weight in the overall average determination of each Sailors physical readiness. In boot camp, a recruit must earn an average score of 60 points or higher to graduate. Once a recruit has joined the fleet, the Sailor must maintain an average score of at least 50 points to be kept in good standing.
To help sailors succeed, this year the Navy launched an app, entitled, Official Navy PFA, to guide sailors in training for and maintaining all aspects of the bi-annual PRT.

Navy Male Prt Standards
Male sailors have different minimum standards for boot camp compared to females. The minimum expectations depend on your age.
In order to calculate your overall score:
- Step 1: Determine the points you earned for each activity.
- Step 2: Add the points for each individual event.
- Step 3: Divide the total points by three to get an average.
- Step 4: Assign performance category level.

You will then take a two part medical exam: First there is a questionnaire on your medical history including specific information on your medication. Then the medical staff will conduct a physical exam to measure your height, weight, evaluate your vision, colour perception and hearing. The former version of the Army fitness test primarily measured muscle and aerobic endurance.
Currently, the ACFT measures ten areas of fitness:

The ACFT is made up of six field events that soldiers must perform in a specific order.

Active-duty soldiers take the ACFT twice per year.
Each soldier is required to pass the same six individual events that make up the ACFT.
If a soldier does not achieve a passing standard for one or more of the events, then they will not pass the ACFT as a whole.

The maximum score for each event is 100 and the typical minimum passing score is 60 per event.
Navy Requirements For Males
Physical fitness standards vary by gender and age. For a good rating, males ages 20 to 24 must be able to do 58 curl-ups in two minutes, 47 pushups in two minutes, run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes, and swim 500 yards in 11 minutes and 30 seconds, explains the team at Military.com.
A maximum rating rewards 105 curl-ups, 87 pushups, a 1.5-mile run in 8 minutes and 30 seconds, and a 500-yard swim in 6 minutes and 30 seconds. For males ages 25 to 29, a good rating applies to 54 curl-ups, 44 pushups, a 1.5-mile run in 12 minutes and 53 seconds, and a 500-yard swim in 11 minutes and 38 seconds.
A maximum rating is for 101 curl-ups, 84 pushups, a 1.5-mile run in 8 minutes and 55 seconds, and a 500-yard swim in 6 minutes and 38 seconds.

The Current Army Physical Fitness Test
Here you’ll find the current Army Physical Fitness Test requirements and the male standard for ages 27-31.
The U.S. Army measures physical aptitude through the Army Physical Fitness Test, or APFT, which requires soldiers to complete three events: 2 minutes of push-ups, 2 minutes of sit-ups, and a 2-mile run.
Scoring on the APFT is based on age category, gender, number of repetitions performed of the push-up and sit-up, and run time. The score for each event ranges from 0 to 100 points. Soldiers need to score at least a 60 to pass the test. APFT standards may be tougher for some special purpose units.
Scores of 270 or above on the APFTwith a minimum score of 90 in each eventearn soldiers the Physical Fitness badge.
