- The minimum height required for entry into the Armed Forces for male cadets is 157 cm or as decided by the respective recruiting agency.
- Gorkhas and candidates belonging to Hills of North Eastern region of India. Garhwal and Kumaon will be accepted a minimum height of 152 cm.
- An allowance for growth of 02 cm be made for candidates below 18 yrs at the time of examination.
- The minimum height requirement for the Flying Branch is 163 cm. Other anthropometric standards like sitting height, leg length and thigh length are required by the Flying Branch.
The Impact Of Weight And Body
One way to assess the impact of body-fat standards on the military is to look at the cost in terms of personnel management, namely the proportion of personnel enrolled in weight-management programs at any given time. Assignment to these programs requires paperwork and other administrative costs and may involve lost duty time. As of December 1999, 0.5 percent of male officers, 1.3 percent of female officers, 1.6 percent of male enlisted personnel, and 3.0 percent of female enlisted personnel were enrolled in the Air Force Weight Management Program. Data on weight-management programs recidivism or long-term success are not systematically compiled by any of the services, a situation that is, at least in part, intentional. The services attempt to minimize the stigma associated with participation in these programs by purging records.
After 30 Years The Us Army Is Changing Its Height And Weight Standards
The Army expects that it will be six to nine months before they can recommend changes to the Army leadership.
Here Is What You Need To Remember: The argument for change is that the standards are based on the sizes that people were many years ago and that has changed.
The U.S. Army is trying to reevaluate the body composition of soldiers. It has begun conducting a study on this topic at Fort Bragg, according to the Army Times.
The Army is looking at the body compositions of more than 2,000 soldiers beginning in October, and the service plans to use the data it gathers to determine the future of its body composition program, physical fitness manuals and the much-maligned tape test, with the Armys Center for Initial Military Training leading the study along with the Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine.
Additionally, the Army is looking at changing height and weight standards after not doing so for more than thirty years, according to Task and Purpose. In fact, Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Grinston told Task and Purpose that he has been asked regularly about the standards on his travels of late.
The study kicked off on October 18.
The rationale is, it was time to go look at it, Grinston told Task and Purpose. What technologies do we have today that didnt exist 30 years ago? Theres a lot of new technology, but can we afford it? Is it better or worse? We dont know. Thats the whole point of the study.

Development Of Army Body Fat Equations
An Army study was conducted to establish population-specific body fat equations that could be used by soldiers to estimate body fat without special instruction and without costly equipment . As an interim method of body fat measurement, the Army adopted the Durnin-Womersley skinfold equations . This method required the standardization of measurement procedures by trained medical personnel throughout the Army, using appropriate equipment . Commanders were distressed by the difficulty of obtaining consistent, accurate skinfold measurements and by the jump in body fat that occurred between certain birthdays for the same sum of skinfold measurements . Accordingly, the new method was to use simple measurements and avoid the use of age. The DOD directive noted that this assessment was to be applied only to the high-risk group who failed an initial weight screen. A later amendment to the directive also required the services to use a circumference-based method, developed by comparison to hydrostatic weight, which achieved a minimum correlation of 0.85 .
The Force Program Has Two Key Components
- A new fitness evaluation which includes four test components, each of which is directly linked to physical demands that CAF members may encounter on operations. The FORCE Evaluation predicts CAF members ability to perform the six common military tasks using simple simulations and minimal equipment.

What Happens If You Dont Pass
If a soldier fails the physical fitness test during basic training, the instructor will conduct an evaluation to find out why. In some cases, the soldier may be given remedial physical training to improve their physical fitness. However, if it is determined that the soldier isnt suitable for military service, they may be discharged from the training.
Soldiers who are in basic combat training also have to attend four hours of physical training each day. This consists of two hours of strength training as well as two hours of cardio.
Us Army Height & Weight Requirements For Current Soldiers
Why do we include height and weight guidelines for currently serving troops in an article discussing enlistment standards? Because as mentioned above, it wont be long before the recruit is tested again for body composition after going on active duty. These issues are a career-long concern for all soldiers.
Previous iterations of AR-900 have included statements directed at currently serving soldiers that most today would consider to be derogatory. The 1986 version goes so far as to state, Excessive body fat connotes a lack of personal discipline, detracts from military appearance, may indicate a poor state of health, physical fitness, or stamina .
The above statement from the 1986 edition doesnt take into account medical issues or other factors that may inform the diagnosis of an individual person as overweight.
Language in the 2019 revision of AR-900 takes a far more nuanced approach, stating, Soldiers are subject to many demands and challenges that may impact individual readiness. The Army Body Composition Program provides commanders a systematic approach to enforce military standards across the unit while offering troops with the resources they need to return to an optimum level of individual readiness.
The U.S. Army has the following requirements for height and weight for those currently serving:
Any soldier failing to meet body fat standards after six months from date of entry to active service will be entered in the ABCP.

How Are The Us Weight And Height Taken
The Armed workforce takes official weight and stature estimation to decide an applicants physical condition. Usually, a portion of the physical exam of the MEPS each candidate of the US Army needs to successfully pass before the process of being sworn in as a select.
The estimation will be adjusted to the closest inch with the below rules: in case the height division is less than a half-inch, circular down. Or in case the official height division could be a half-inch or more noteworthy, circular up. The weight of the pre-soldiers can be recorded as well as measured to the closest pound. The weight and height of the soldiers will be taken authoritatively at the official US Military Entrance Processing Station. Both stature and weight estimations are adjusted up or down to the closest entirety digit. The adjustment depends on whether it is more or less than .5 pounds. To be more specific, in case your current weight is measured at 179.7 pounds, your official weight which will be noted is exactly 180 pounds.
In the event that your weight surpasses the most extreme restriction given by the U.S. Armed force, at that point the Military Entrance Processing Station authorities may select to carry out body fat rate tests before the process of enlisting.

Department Of Defense Directive 13081 And The Us Army Body Fat Standards
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter, another health- and fitness-minded President, asked for an assessment of military physical fitness programs. A review was conducted by a panel of government scientists , and a Department of Defense directive was issued based on their recommendations . Included was a requirement that the services use body fat standards to assess obesity. It was directed that weight tables would still be used as a preliminary screen for retention standards, but the final determination would be based on a new objective body fat assessment procedure instead of the physician’s assessment.
Obesity was defined by the panel as anything over 22 percent body fat for men and 29 percent for women. Desirable body fat figures were originally to be 15 percent for men and 23 percent for women. These values were based on a consensus by panel members who felt that the figures would require revision as a better understanding was gained of the relationship between health and body fat. Health concerns brought body fat assessment into the recommendations. However, health was construed to be a subset of military performance in terms of “man hours lost due to minor illnesses and lack of vigor.” The panel’s report noted further that

Service Academy Fitness Assessment
These physical fitness assessments are conducted over two consecutive days. The events emphasize functional exercise aimed at providing physical training benefits for the activities of daily living, military training, and combat.Individual readiness is tested in the areas of muscular strength, muscular endurance, aerobic endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, and flexibility.
Male and female candidates will be evaluated against the following:
Minimum Requirements: 1.5 mile run: 13:30 pull-ups: five unassisted 21 push-ups 43 sit-ups 1.5 mile run: 12:30 push-ups/sit-ups/pull-ups completed consecutively without exceeding 60 seconds.
The Army Physical Fitness Test is administered at least twice a year. The test consists of three events: two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups, and a timed test of 2 miles run according to the following guidelines:
For passing the test, Soldiers must perform the number of repetitions within the time limit for their age group and gender, or obtain a minimum score on each event. There is no maximum score on any event. A perfect APFT score is 300 points. Only three types of failures are possible: a score of fewer than 60 points, a timed mile run over 12:52 for age 20-29, and a perfect score plus a timed mile run over 13:30 for age 18-29.
Are There Any Growth Allowances Given
Given that you cant control your height and that someone can be recruited into the Army as early as 17 years old, there have been some cases of people being allowed to stay in the military despite exceeding the height requirements.
For example, the famous basketball player and 2-time Olympic gold medal winner David Robinson first entered the US Navy when he was 80 inches tall, just one inch over the Navys height restriction at that time of 80 inches. However, he was granted an allowance due to the assumption that he wouldnt grow much more. That turned out to be a huge miscalculation as Robinson ended up growing to around 85 inches tall, meaning he well-exceeded the height standard. Rather than being discharged, he was able to serve active duty while growing his basketball career and later served in the Naval Reserves helping with recruitment and campaigning.
While Robinson still had some active part in the Navy, his height prevented him from later serving on any US navy ships. Better yet, this is unlikely to happen nowadays, and there are not many known cases of exceptions being given to the height restrictions. Height limits, therefore, are something to be aware of when planning on joining the US military.

How Do The Figures Compare With Civilian Standards
The recruits in the army are selected from a larger population. Thus, their measurements are not as different from those in the civilian population as those of Olympians.
There is a difference between height and weight in the civilian population. It averages about 1 for heights of 5 feet 9 inches and higher and about 2 at the lower end of this height range. The weight variation is much more significant in the civilian population than in civilians who have joined the army. It could be because of social factors influencing height and weight. Men tend to have a larger size than women in the civilian population.
Us Army Height And Weight Standards By Age
The US Army has a standard height and weight table for every soldier. The army gives soldiers a height and weight gauge when they enlist, but it also takes your body mass index to determine if you are eligible for a certain category of service.
According to military.com Although body mass standards can vary slightly from service to service, theyre set at a level that allows officers and enlisted soldiers to carry out all the tasks required of them, including strength training, field exercises and combat operations. The average height for men in the Army is . In 2011, the average weight was 180 pounds.
The U.S. Army has strict physical, mental, and age requirements for those who wish to serve in the military. From fitness tests to medical exams, the Army makes sure that all candidates are physically prepared for the rigorous demands of military life.
The Army has age and weight requirements for both men and women. The weight limits are based on the body type, height, and gender of the applicant. The minimum requirement is 39 pounds, and the maximum is 68 pounds. The maximum body fat level allowed is 12 percent for men and 10 percent for women. Soldiers with injuries that require medical care or those who are obese will not be allowed into basic training or into other military jobs that have high physical demand, such as an officers job.
