The Different Types Of Army Staff Officers By Branch

As you progress in the Army as an officer and sometimes as an NCO youre bound to end up on staff at some point or another. Like death or taxes, it is inevitable and sometimes as equally dreaded. One of the perks of staff besides the feeling of constant dread and the ability to always walk around with a cup of lukewarm coffee with the consistency of sludge is getting to work with people from other branches.

When your career path edges you into higher echelons of the staff, you end up rubbing elbows with people from a multitude of branches some that you never knew even existed. And nowhere are the differences in personalities from each branch more apparent than on staff. What follows is a breakdown of the type of staff officers that youll be wont to come across in your career.

Infantry staff officers If you cant ruck it, shoot it, smoke/dip it, drink it, or make it do pushups, the infantry staff officer doesnt really care about it.

Armor staff officers Does your course of action involve tanks? Does any part of the operation involve tanks? If not, why? And if yes, then all the tanks need to be doing tank things: namely, rolling over and through the enemy, no matter who they are.

Cavalry staff officers What do you mean wearing a Stetson all day isnt allowed? No, I wont take my feet off my desk. And of course we can take that objective of dug-in T-80 tanks with one troop of cav scouts.

How Do You Get A Separation For Convenience Of The Government

While there are many reasons why you could receive this type of discharge, the most common are the following:

  • Involuntary separation due to parenthood
  • Diagnosis of a Personality disorder
  • Other designated physical or mental conditions

For Involuntary separation due to parenthood, it basically means that the serviceperson cannot complete their duties due to family responsibilities.

Diagnosis of a personality disorder happens when a serviceperson develops a mental disorder while serving in the military.

An example of this would be a serviceperson developing paranoia or schizophrenia sometime during their service.

Other designated physical or mental conditions is a broad characterization.

Essentially, it means that a serviceperson developed a physical or mental condition that is not technically characterized as a disorder.

An example of this would be someone in the Navy developing chronic seasickness, and unable to overcome this condition normally.

The Individual Ready Reserve

This is a type of military service that is included in a standard military contract a typical military service commitment lasts eight years total, with a specified amount of that time spent on active duty or as a member of the Guard/Reserves.

The time that is not spent actively serving is considered inactive time during which the military member may technically be a civilian for all intents and purposes, but still remains subject to recall to active service. That inactive time is when the military member is classified as a member of the Individual Ready Reserve or IRR.

The IRR works like this: a military member who chooses to enlist serves for years on active duty and then chooses not to re-enlist. The original enlistment was for EIGHT years, but the last four of those are spent on IRR status. IRR members do not train, they do not attend monthly drills or annual meet ups they also do not draw military pay for IRR status.

Generally, after serving four years, a member is transferred to the IRR for their remaining four years. IRR members dont take part in weekend drills or annual training, but unfortunately, they dont get paid either. IRR members can be recalled into active duty when necessary, in order to support military projects.

During IRR status, the time spent inactive doesnt count toward veterans benefits unless the member is recalled into active duty.
