Survivors And Dependents Educational Assistance

If you become permanently disabled as a result of service, the Survivors and Dependents Education Assistance program provides tuition assistance to your spouse and children. This program may be:

  • used for up to 45 months of education in degree and certificate programs, apprenticeships or on-the-job training
  • combined with the benefits of the GI Bill, effectively providing 81 months worth of tuition assistance

Basic Pay Is Getting Its Biggest Boost In A Decade

A look at the basics that make up your basic pay and what could be in store for your bank account come 2022:

What is basic pay?

Basic pay is determined by rank and length of service, with automatic raises when troops meet certain time and promotion markers. In addition, each year Congress determines how much of a pay raise all troops should get.

The figure is tied by law to the anticipated increase in private sector pay, but lawmakers in the past have approved bigger raises to help with recruitment and retention or smaller raises to save money for other military priorities.

Annual pay increases

The annual military pay increase takes effect in January of each year. The White House issues its target for the hike each August, either going along with the projected rise in private sector wages, known as the Employment Cost Index, or offering justification for proposing a different rate.

Congress has the final say, however. In the past, lawmakers have overridden attempts by the White House to submit lower pay raises in an effort to save money for other priorities. The raise is usually applied across the board, although lawmakers made an exception at the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to provide more money for some mid-career service members to help with retention.

The most junior enlisted service members make around $25,000 a year in basic pay , while enlisted troops nearing retirement typically earn about $70,000 annually.

  • The militarys Savings Deposit Program lets deployed service members invest up to $10,000 in the program each time you are deployed. You receive 10% annual interest, compounded quarterly the program lasts for up to three months after your return.

To put that in perspective: The average interest rate on a regular savings account these days is less than 0.1%. The SDP rate is more than 100 times higher.

Find Flexibility In The Way You Can Serve

People who join the full-time Army are commonly expected to work on a full-time basis. However the ADF has flexible work arrangements available such as the ability to work from home, work from another location or work outside your normal core hours.

With approval from Army and subject to service capability requirements, you may be able to work part-time to suit your current situation. Applications will only be considered after completion of recruit and Initial Employment Training, which will typically be several months after appointment/enlistment.

A Deeper Look At Triple

Tax Benefits for Members of the Military

The article went on to state, nearly 60,000 triple dippers collected $3.5 billion in benefits, and, Of the $3.5 billion spent in 2013 on the triple dippers, $1.4 billion came from the VA, $1.2 billion came from the Pentagon, and $937.4 million came from Social Security.

On the surface, that is a huge number. But the article went on to quote two specific examples:

Veteran 1: A 54-year-old who retired in 1997 after 20 years in the military, who had lung disease, vascular disease and lost use of his feet, collected $122,887 in benefits in 2013 nearly three times the $43,808 someone of his pay grade would have made in the military.

Veteran 2: Meanwhile, a 59-year-old who retired in 2004 after 26 years, who lost his feet, is blind in one eye and has renal problems, collected $152,719 in 2013 more than twice the $72,824 salary of someone at his final military pay grade. Most of his benefits $85,958 came from VA disability, while $46,396 was military retirement, and $20,365 was from Social Security.

These are serious illnesses and injuries.

What the article fails to mention is that Veteran 2 receives the maximum special disability award of $85,958. That is only given to severely disabled veterans who require full aid and attendance in their home. In other words, the money is to be used for home nursing care.

The funds arent going into the veterans bank account. They are being used to provide health care for service-connected injuries.

Housing Health And Dental

The military considers the health and welfare of service members and their families to be one of its most important priorities.

Housing, room and board: The military has a tradition of providing room and board, including meals as part of service members’ pay. While on active duty, you are eligible for free dining or an allowance to cover the cost of your meals if dining facilities are unavailable.

Although military housing varies by rank, location and family situation, new recruits start their military careers living on base. During basic training, recruits live in group quarters with shared bathroom facilities. As service members move up in rank, their housing options expand.

Service members and their families live in well-designed and modern on-base housing communities that emulate what civilian communities offer, including schools, church facilities, gyms, libraries, banks, commissaries, theaters, restaurants, shopping and many other community support services.

Insurance, health and dental care: Hospitals, clinics and dental services are provided for active-duty personnel and their families on or near most military installations. Active-duty service members are eligible for $50,000 to $400,000 in affordable life insurance.

Health care for Reserves and Guard: Reserve members and their families are eligible for health care when activated. Members also may be eligible for either full or partial insurance coverage.

Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Scholarship

The MyCAA Scholarship can provide tuition assistance if your spouse is looking to further his or her education. The MyCAA Scholarship:

  • provides up to $4,000 for military spouses seeking a license, certificate, certification or associate degree for high-demand, high-growth portable career fields and occupations
  • includes many careers such as nursing, construction, information technology and law

Multiple Provider Network Concept

The proposed T-5 changes would involve partnerships between winning TRICARE contractors and local health plans/networks in the regions, creating a multiple provider network concept. The congressional committee hopes that by shifting the next iteration of TRICARE contracts to this construct, it will allow private sector support plans to better serve beneficiaries. Better service would come by more closely matching local beneficiary needs with innovative service and care capabilities, improving integration with military treatment facility leadership, and facilitating a more agile, cost-effective approach for the DOD.

In a second August report, sent from the DHA to the Senate Armed Services Committee, the implementation of a pilot program with these proposed changes was set out, testing the concept only in certain areas. Contracts will be issued directly to provider networks, enabling them to accept TRICARE beneficiaries an approach which will allow local/regional plans and providers to focus solely on delivering health care services rather than these back office activities lead to more plans and providers competing for TRICARE business.

The Pentagon-released draft request for proposal for the T-5 contracts could be worth upwards of $58 billion. Responses to the draft from interested contract bidders are due September 18.

Tricare Continued Health Care Benefit Program

CHCBP is not Tricare, but, rather, a much more expensive benefit, similar to COBRA benefits on civilian medical care. For a premium , the former spouse may continue Tricare coverage for three years, or, if the spouse is unremarried and either receiving a share of the military retirement or SBP, indefinite coverage. Change Allows Extra Gi Bill Benefits For Some Disabled Vets

Individuals who use Veteran Readiness and Employment benefits to pay for college classes will no longer have that counted against their eligibility for GI Bill payouts later on, after a rule change by Veterans Affairs officials earlier this month.

The move, first reported by Military.com, could affect as many as 80,000 individuals who have already used VR& E benefits and unknown thousands more who may use the benefit in the future.

In a statement, VA officials said the change was prompted after an internal review of the programs showed that a more favorable interpretation of the law is allowable to help eligible veterans maximize their benefits.

In the past, the two benefits could not be used together. Every month of VR& E benefits were counted against the 48-month cap on Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, and vice versa. If veterans used the full 48 months of one benefit, they could not access the other.

But veterans groups over the years have challenged that interpretation, saying the benefits cover different issues and should not be grouped together.

The GI Bill program is well-known. Veterans or their dependents can use the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit to pay for college tuition and receive a housing stipend, with the goal of completing a degree program. Combined, the value of the payouts can total several thousand dollars a month, depending on an individuals residency and school choices.
