Identity Theft Is A Threat To Soldiers And It’s Just As Bad For Veterans

Should you join the Army in 2022?

You might think that if you work for the Army, you’d be safe from the threat of identity theft, but let’s get honest and clear about this risk. The truth is that identity theft is rampant for service members, veterans, and their families.

If you haven’t memorized your social security number by now, you will within the first few days of in-processing. Throughout your entire military career, it will be used so often and on so much paperwork that you will get numb to it. Why? There are so many people in the military that the quickest, easiest way to identify each individual is to do so by number. You’ll notice a lot of private sector companies do this as well.

Almost every form you fill out provides another opportunity for a criminal to get your name, SSN, and date of birth. In minutes, you can become an identity theft casualty. If you’re deployed and fighting in the latest war, you might not find out that your personal information has been stolen until months after the fact! Instead of confetti in your ticker-tape parade, you’ll have bills and more paperwork to contend with, but this time the paperwork will be for all the credit bureaus and collection agencies you’ll have to communicate with to sort out your identity theft issues. Oh, and this doesn’t end after your time serving is complete. It’s just as easy to nab a veteran’s identity as it is to steal an active soldier’s identity.

But for now, a soldier must fight on two fronts: to protect his country and his identity.

Less Talented People Join The Military

The same 2020 study found that most recruits had average or slightly-above-average cognitive skills. Although there is an assumption that advanced technology requires less skilled individuals, researchers argue that people with higher skill levels are better placed to work with complex and sophisticated technology.

What Offenses Or Moral Behavior

  • Individuals subject to civil court conviction or adverse disposition for more than one serious offense, or serious offenses with three or more other offenses will not be eligible for a waiver

  • Anyone with three or more convictions related to driving while intoxicated, drugged, or impaired in the past five years prior to application will not be eligible
  • Anyone convicted for five or more misdemeanors is not eligible
  • Individuals who are unable to pass a drug or alcohol test or anyone with charges pending will not be eligible for a waiver

You Might Get Seriously Hurt

Casualties happen in war. War is hell. People know the risks when they join. It comes with the territory, but I’m not talking about that.

What people don’t know is that this can happen at any time and in any place, even stateside. Even if there is no ammunition or other threat around, a soldier can get seriously and permanently injured.

After years of PT , a soldier may have problems with his knees and other joints. He can easily have the same problems pro basketball players have, but without the same salary. Any civilian can get injured, but it is more likely in the military because you are more active and working longer hours with more dangerous equipment.

Medics are ready, safety policies are in place, and your buddies are usually looking out for you, but sometimes this isn’t enough. As a medic, I’ve seen twenty-year-old trainees walking with canes as a result of injuries they sustained during service.

You Will Be Held To A Higher Standard Forever

American Army recruiting poster entitled " your flag ...

The number one awful thing about the Army that nobody tells you is that you will forever be held to a higher standard!

Lexington and Concord, Gettysburg, Normandy, and all the soldiers who fought before you in many historic battles have paved the way. It is now your turn. If you think this is an honor, then you are right. What you might not know is that this is also a huge responsibility, and it will last until the day you die.

Your friends will expect you to be in great shape even after you are discharged. Your family will expect you to be calm and patient. Your coworkers will expect you to lead the way and handle stress easily. Everyone you know will expect you to win. Nobody will expect you to complain. If you oversleep, get drunk, become poor, gain weight, etc., then you will disappoint the civilians who look up to you.

This responsibility brings out the best in soldiers and veterans, but it lasts foreverâand it will never be easy to deal with.

How Do I Apply For An Army Waiver

Applying for an Army waiver is as simple as requesting a form. However, it should be noted that the point of the waiver is for the applicant to prove they overcame a disqualifying issue that would otherwise prevent them from joining the Army. Once the waiver has been submitted, a comprehensive review will take place and it will be determined if the individual can join.

Pilot Age Requirements / Limit

Just like with the height and weight requirements, there are different age limitations for pilots.

While the minimum age for pilots is 18, its very uncommon for a pilot to be that young.

The average age for Air Force pilots entering flight school is around 23 years old.

Before earning a slot at Undergraduate Pilot Training , the candidate must first meet with a selection board.

This board will determine whether or not youre competitive enough for a slot in UPT, and must be conducted before you reach 29 years of age.

You must also be enrolled in UPT before the age of 33.

With that said, age waivers are available for potential pilots up to the age of 35.

I realize all of this might be a little confusing, so heres a handy chart which sums it all up in general:

You Are On Call 24/7 Even When You’re Not

Ever wonder why service members tell time differently? For example, it’s not 11 p.m., it’s 2300 hrs. This is because war never sleeps. Those who think otherwise have another thing coming. Battle is about maneuvering units and materials at a moment’s notice to secure a tactical advantage. This can easily happen at night, and it can easily make no sense to you.

No matter what your rank or specialization, the Army can wake you up at 0200 hrs and make you guard a port-o-potty in the middle of nowhere, thousands of miles from any national security threat. The only items you might have to protect yourself will be a broom and a canteen. You’ll have no say in the matter, and nobody is required to explain anything to you.

You’re not even safe when you’re on vacation. Oh, didn’t you know that the Army considers weekends and holidays to be vacation days? That fact came as a shock to me. When you go on vacation, you are expected to fill out a lot more paperwork than you would at a typical company in the private sector. The Army wants to know every detail regarding your whereabouts when you’re on vacationâincluding the hotel you’ll be staying in.

Why? In case of a national emergency, the Army has to know where you are so it can summon you if they need you. Even if you are far from your base, you may be contacted to report to a closer one. This is highly unlikely, but it is a soldier’s responsibility.

Conflict Issues With Medicare

TRICARE beneficiaries who also receive Medicare should be careful of how they manage the two insurance programs. If you receive Social Security benefits, you are also able to utilize Medicare Part A after some time. Failure to purchase access to Medicare Part B whenever it is first offered to you will terminate your eligibility for TRICARE. Military medical benefits can be used in conjunction with Medicare, so its beneficial to enroll in Medicare Part B whenever possible.

Military Age Restrictions By Branch

At age 66, Broun still serves as a doctor in the Navy Reserve. In an interview with Army Times, he called the enlistment age cap an arbitrary policy.

There are people who want to serve and are physically fit, he said. There are some 20-year-olds who cannot run a mile.

Since Brouns attempt in 2012, the military policy on age restrictions has changed. The Air Force, for example, raised its maximum age. See the age requirements for Active Duty enlistees of each branch below:

  • Army: 17-35 years old
  • Navy: 17-34 years old
  • Air Force: 17-39 years old
  • Coast Guard: 17-27 years old

In general, the Defense Department restricts enlistment to those 35 and younger. Prior enlisted service members can subtract their previous years of service from their age in order to extend eligibility. For example, the current age cutoff in the Air Force is 39. This means that a 31-year-old veteran with four years of prior service experience would still be eligible to reenlist.

Rep. Susan Davis of the Armed Services Committee personnel panel has said the risks outnumbered gains when it came to enlisting older personnel. She said they are not only more likely to become injured, but also take more time to recover than their younger counterparts.

Maximum Age For Military Enlistment

Across the United States Armed Forces, the maximum age for enlistment for someone who has never served in the military before depends on the branch. For the Army, the maximum age is 35. For the Navy, age waivers start at 34-years-old. For the Air Force, the maximum age allowed to join is 39-years-old. The Marines have the lowest maximum age for regular military service at 28-years-old. Special Operations branches also have different maximum ages due to the physical challenges put upon the candidates compared to regular military service. These maximum ages can be waived if the recruit has the education, skills, experience that the military needs to fill its ranks. The same holds true for the Special Operations communities, where waivers are available, but only on a case by case basis and typically approved or disapproved by the commanding officer of the selection program or the community manager/detailer.

Often the age waivers that do get approved are those in the professional jobs fields .

The maximum age of non-prior service enlistment under Federal Law was 35-years-old. In 2006, the Army asked Congress to raise the age limit to 44-years-old. Congress did not approve this change, but raised the maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42.

Regardless of Federal Law, the military services are allowed to impose more strict standards, and many of them have. The maximum age for non-prior service enlistments for each service is:

The Army does not typically accept individuals with tattoos on their hands, wrists, face, or neck. Tattoos anywhere above the neckline or on the head, including in the mouth, ears, or eyelids, disqualifies a candidate. A tattoo waiver is available for candidates who have disqualifying tattoos. However, tattoos that are extremist, racist, sexist, or indecent are prohibited anywhere on a Soldiers body, without exception.

Air Force Reserve Age Limit

At what age will BTS enlist into the army? Can they enlist ...

To join the Air Force reserve, the age requirements are as follows:

  • Non-prior service: 17 39 years old
  • Prior service: Your adjusted age must be less than 40. *

* How To Calculate Your Adjusted Age

For prior service Air Force reserve candidates, your adjusted age must be less than 40 years old.

You can calculate this by simply subtracting your years of service from your age.

So for example, if you served for 10 years in the active duty Air Force, and youre 48 years old, your Adjusted Age would be 38.

This would make you qualified to serve in the Air Force reserves.

Changing An Administrative Discharge

The DRB can change the reason and type of an administrative discharge however, it cannot change an administrative discharge to a discharge for disability. To change the nature of your discharge from an administrative to medical, you will have to apply to a BCMR. Your chances of getting the change from this board are improved if you have been successful before the DRB. There is a 3-year statute of limitations in applying to the BCMR however, this limitation may be waived if it is in “the interest of justice.” A personal appearance before the BCMR is rarely permitted and the board typically takes from six months to 15 months to decide an application.

Any Veteran’s Affairs Office can provide you or your client with the forms necessary to begin the review process or you can get them from the Department of Defense over the internet. NVLSP sells a comprehensive manual on Military Discharge Upgrading. Their address and phone number are: 2001 S. Street, N.W., Suite 610, Washington, D.C. 20009, 265-8305.
