Awful Things About The Army You Might Not Know
Before I begin listing and explaining my points, I want to make it clear that this article is not meant to be disrespectful or insulting to any branch of the military. I’m not bashing the Army or America by shedding light on the unsatisfactory aspects of service. Also, I don’t want to scare anybody or discourage serving in a branch of the military because the Army isn’t scary. If you sincerely want to serve, then that’s awesome!
So what’s this article actually about? Let’s put it this way: If you want to buy a car, you can go to a dealership and stare at a car endlessly. You can walk around it as many times as you want, maybe even kick the tires. But remember, tires can be changed. You have to look under the hood. If you want to make the right decision about purchasing a car or pursuing a military career, you have to do your homework. This article will help you do that.
I’ll focus on the Army in this article because it’s the only branch of the military that I served in. I can’t speak for the other branches. To be fair, I have another article titled 7 Awesome Things About the Army Your Recruiter Will Never Tell You. Take a look at it after you read this one.
Finally, throughout this article, I’ll refer to the soldier as a “he.” I’m only doing so to keep things simple. I know there are many female service members, and I am proud to have served alongside them. Thank you for understanding.
What Is The Minimum Service Commitment My Child Will Be Making To The Air Force
When you enlist in the Air Force, you incur an overall eight-year Military Service Obligation with the option of a four- or six-year active-duty service commitment to the Air Force. Qualified individuals who enlist for four years active duty will incur an Inactive Ready Reserve obligation of four years. Qualified individuals who enlist for six years active duty will incur an Inactive Ready Reserve obligation of two years.
The service commitment for Air Force Officers is four years active-duty service, unless they become a navigator or a pilot. Navigators will incur a six-year service commitment from the date they complete training and are awarded an aeronautical rating. Pilots incur a 10-year service commitment from the date they complete training and are awarded an aeronautical rating. Airmen in these roles are evaluated for continued service one year to 18 months before the completion of this commitment. If approved for continued service, the Airman can serve out the remainder of the commitment.
Not So Cool Jobs In The Marines
Like most other branches, the Marines have their fair share of jobs that are considered the worst.
However, unlike the Navy, Army, or Air Force, theyre considered the worst for different reasons than you might think.
As I mentioned earlier, most guys join the Marines for one key reason: to see combat.
If you end up doing the following jobs, theres a good chance you will be nowhere near the fight:

Allow Yourself To Grieve
It took me quite a while to realize that I needed to grieve. I had all of these incredibly strong emotions that kept bubbling over and I could not make sense of them.
I kept telling myself to pull it together, that I was being a big baby. After all, my son is a grown man right? Why on earth couldnt I just move on??
Then it hit me one day…I had to grieve.
Grieve the loss of life as we knew it, the loss of control, the loss of being able to protect my child, the loss of his presence in our home, the loss of who he was before he entered the gates of Fort Benning, the loss of my normal!
When we think of grieving we generally associate it with death, but there are times when we just need to grieve because life will never be the same again.
This is one of those times.
Embrace that and go through the grieving process.

How Does The Military Compare With The Private Sector
The military offers stable but challenging careers with regular promotions and often accelerated responsibility. It provides training in 4,100 specialties, many of which have civilian counterparts. The armed forces also provide leadership experience and training that help people excel if they leave the military following their commitment. Other military benefits include early retirement programs, health and dental care, 30 days of paid vacation each year, veterans benefits, competitive pay and a variety of ways to earn money for college and training.
Job Training College Benefits
The recruiter will probably emphasize the high-tech, state-of-the-art, sophisticated equipment that you will get to work with. True, some soldiers are trained for the highly skilled jobs. Generally, however, those jobs go to the soldier who was already trained, educated, and technically skilled before joining the military. Many of the high-skill jobs will go to soldiers who already have at least two years of college. And often the high-tech work is done by civilian contractors who have the necessary training and skills.
In reality, few military assignments could be described as high-tech, although many of the jobs sound high-tech. For instance, one U.S. Army brochure includes assignments with titles such as, combat engineering, general engineering, supply and service, and food service. These assignments, and others offered by the military, would likely offer little more than low skill, manual labor. The armed forces simply do not have the time, the need, or the resources to train many recruits for highly skilled work.

- Global Integrated ISR
While serving in the Air Force, youll sometimes feel like youre working more in a corporation than in a branch of the military.

What Are The Consequences If I Do Not Go To Meps On My Ship Date
You will get out of the military. As described above it may take some time before it is finalized, but eventually everyonewho has not reported has been released. We have never seen withdrawing from the DEP have any effect on things like employment, bank loans, school eligibility, or your legal record. This is the case for non-citizens as well as citizens. In fact the military will normally let someone who has gotten out of the DEP enlist again. Some employment applications ask about military service.Generally people do not list DEP time on employment application reasoning that they were never in an active pay status.

How Do I Deal With My Son Leaving For Boot Camp
As hard as it is for new recruits to go away to boot camp, it can feel almost as hard on their parents. From the lack of communication during certain parts of the training process to the uncertainty of not knowing whether your child is succeeding, it can be a stressful period for everyone involved.
However, there are a few things you can do to make your sons departure for boot camp a little easier. Follow these tips to ease the transition for you both:
- Learn about how boot camp works. The fear of the unknown is a large part of the stress going into boot camp. Learning about what your child can expect throughout their training process will go a long way towards putting your mind at ease.
- Know that its okay to be upset. Sadness, depression, and anxiety are all common emotions that parents feel when their child is preparing to go away to boot camp. These feelings are normal and should pass once you hear from your child and realize that their transition is going smoothly.
- Write tons of letters. Letters are as good as gold in boot camp, as phone calls are extremely limited and these are the only connection new recruits get with the outside world for weeks at a time. Keep your letters encouraging and lighthearted so you dont give your child something else to worry about while theyre training.
Whats A Typical Day In The Coast Guard Like
Just like the other branches, this depends exclusively on what rate you hold and where youre stationed.
Unlike most of the other branches, however, it was nearly impossible to find out what the typical day in the Coast Guard would be like.
It varies so dramatically that Ive decided to leave it out in this article.
If anyone who has served in the US Coast Guard wants to send me an email with their a brief recap of their day-to-day activities, it would be greatly appreciated!

You Are On Call 24/7 Even When You’re Not
Ever wonder why service members tell time differently? For example, it’s not 11 p.m., it’s 2300 hrs. This is because war never sleeps. Those who think otherwise have another thing coming. Battle is about maneuvering units and materials at a moment’s notice to secure a tactical advantage. This can easily happen at night, and it can easily make no sense to you.
No matter what your rank or specialization, the Army can wake you up at 0200 hrs and make you guard a port-o-potty in the middle of nowhere, thousands of miles from any national security threat. The only items you might have to protect yourself will be a broom and a canteen. You’ll have no say in the matter, and nobody is required to explain anything to you.
You’re not even safe when you’re on vacation. Oh, didn’t you know that the Army considers weekends and holidays to be vacation days? That fact came as a shock to me. When you go on vacation, you are expected to fill out a lot more paperwork than you would at a typical company in the private sector. The Army wants to know every detail regarding your whereabouts when you’re on vacationâincluding the hotel you’ll be staying in.
Why? In case of a national emergency, the Army has to know where you are so it can summon you if they need you. Even if you are far from your base, you may be contacted to report to a closer one. This is highly unlikely, but it is a soldier’s responsibility.
Getting Into Another Branch
Sometimes people who have signed up for the DEP of one branch of the military decide they want to be in a different branch instead. Because a person is only allowed to be in one branch of the service at a time, a DEP member who wants to change branches must be discharged before he or she can sign another contract. Because many recruiters leave people in the DEP for the entire year allowed, this presents a problem when people are in a hurry to join another branch. One avenue to speed up the process of getting out is to submit a letter asking for release. Telling the recruiter that you are interested in joining a different branch of the military may cause the recruiter to delay your release as long as possible, knowing that you cant join another branch until you are released
If after 2-3 weeks of asking for discharge in writing there is no satisfactory reply, a person can contact their local congressional office and ask that an inquiry be done into status of their separation request.

How Can Child Soldiers Be Helped
Many child soldiers end up desensitised to violence, which can psychologically damage them. Many are traumatised by what they have been forced to do or have witnessed. Children need to undergo reintegration programmes to help them return to civilian life.
Girls face the additional difficulty of social stigma attached to the belief they have been engaged in sexual activity.
Most child soldiers have missed out on school and need additional education in order to feed themselves and make a more stable life for themselves.
There are various organisations such as War Child and Child Soldiers International who are dedicated to tackling the problem through campaigning and raising awareness, as well as rescuing and rehabilitating child soldiers.
Theirworld is a global childrens charity committed to ending the global education crisis and unleashing the potential of the next generation.
What Is A Child Soldier
Any girl or boy below the age of 18 who is recruited or used by an armed force or armed group, in any capacity.
A child soldier is not just someone who is involved in fighting. They can also be those in other roles such as cooks, porters, messengers, human shields, spies, suicide bombers or those used for sexual exploitation. It includes children recruited and trained for military purposes, but not used in war.

Tips On Mailing Letters To Your Son Or Daughter At Basic Training
One great way to keep in contact easily is by using the Sandboxx App. Its an electronic way to send letters to your son or daughter while they are in Basic Training, and theyll receive any letter that you send within 2 days! Its an amazing resource to have to communicate between the two of you because it means that youll be able to communicate quickly and more efficiently than by sending letters in the mail.
Mailing letters is fun, but it can take upwards of a week for those letters to be delivered! With the Sandoxx App, you and your child dont have to wait that long.
The Army Is Not Adult Daycarethis Misconception Gets People Killed
One of the things I despise most is the idea that the Army serves the soldier. The Army doesn’t serve you you serve your country by joining the Army. Fortunately, there are very few people that believe this because Basic Combat Training does an outstanding job of smoking that idea out of recruits’ heads. But still, people who think of the Army as an adult daycare facility are out there making life for other soldiers far worse and sometimes more dangerous. Immature people who misunderstand the purpose of the Army usually want access to the Army’s benefits without understanding the sacrifices and responsibilities associated with serving.
Even though the Army does have benefits that help soldiers and families throughout their lives, these benefits are not available anywhere else, so it makes sense for civilians to join the military to get them. But those benefits are not what I’m talking about. In fact, if you serve, I highly recommend that you get involved in all the beneficiary programs you can. Doing so will enable you to be a better soldier now and a better civilian afterwards.
What I am talking about is the idea that the Army is just a job that’s impossible to get fired from or a steady source of income for anyone who can twiddle his thumbs and stay out of sight. Usually, I don’t care what people think. However, this kind of attitude usually leads to a sub-par performance.
