Should I Join The Military As A Woman

-

Ive Been Left Behind Because I Am A Woman

For any female considering joining the military.

Tech. Sgt. Holly Ward, Air Force, 2006-Present

On all three of my overseas deployments, I was the only woman on my team. I lived separately, usually farther away from daily meeting points. I was left behind on major movements, forgotten about and asked to form up over an hour before my male colleagues, simply because I was a woman and lived elsewhere. On one deployment, my team forgot to notify me that we were leaving the country the next day. It turned out the announcement had been made in the male barracks only. I made the flight, but it still stung that I learned the information secondhand. I chose at that moment to dedicate my career to fighting for better inclusion.

Across the armed services, women made up 16 percent of the active-duty military as of 2017 by branch, that number ranged from 8.4 percent within the Marine Corps to nearly 20 percent within the Air Force. Their representation is small and growing only marginally in 2007, women in uniform made up 14.4 percent of the force and their stories tend to be ignored in favor of legacies left by men who have shaped the narrative of service to country. Despite being overlooked, servicewomen are forging new career paths for themselves and the next generation as they enter jobs that were once closed to them. Consider pioneers like Capt. Rosemary Mariner, who was one of the first female Navy pilots in the 1970s and the first woman to lead a naval aviation squadron. She died in January from ovarian cancer, and her memory was honored last month with a flyover using all-female pilots. Or First Lt. Marina A. Hierl, who in 2018 became the first woman in the Marine Corps to command an infantry platoon.

What Women Should Know Before Enlisting

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, there are more than 201,000 female active-duty military members serving our country. Today, more than 90% of the military occupations available are open to women, making it a great potential employment path for American women. Whether you want to see the world, test your discipline, or find an exciting and fulfilling job, the military can be an excellent option. That said, there are some tips that females should consider when preparing to enlist in the armed forces. For example:

Be prepared when you meet with the recruiter. Youll need your social security card, birth certificate, other IDs, transcripts from high school and college, and more. Its also a good idea to research job positions that you may be interested in filling during your service, rather than leaving it up to the recruiter to pick one for you. Also, review the list of medical conditions that can disqualify you, as well as the ones that require a waiver from your doctor. Going in prepared can save you time and headaches of having to reschedule your meeting.

Good luck and thank you for your service!

Whats One Thing You Wish People Knew About Uniformed Service

One thing I wish more people knew is just how many opportunities, resources, and benefits are available not only for service members, but also for their families. Military service opens so many doors, and really can change a persons life for the better. The military provides a sense of community and support even after youve completed your service and can allow you and your family to live a great life, whether it be by providing educational assistance, a steady income, job security, and the opportunity to serve and retire after 20 years.

Being Beautiful And A Soldier

Some People Think Women Should Be Allowed to Join the Army

Staff Sgt. San Juanita Escobar, Texas Army National Guard, 2007-Present

I am currently Mrs. Texas Galaxy. When I was a National Guard recruiter, I came across many young women who said they couldnt join because they were too girlie. So I started to compete in beauty pageants again to prove that you can still be and feel beautiful and follow any career path you want.

Military Service For Women Can Be Amazing Frustrating Empowering And Bizarre

In honor of Womens History Month, lets take a look at the experience of women in todays military. Has it changed, evolved, and improved in the last century? Definitely. Is that process complete? Definitely not.

You cant go very long right now without seeing a news article about someone who has become the first woman to hold a previously male-only combat or leadership role. This is great in that it shows integration is actively occurring. However, the very existence of these news stories is indicative of the fact that full integration has not yet been achieved.

Youve likely also noticed an uptick in articles related to women in the military and sexual harassment and sexual assault. These important issues are thought to have a number of causes and a great deal of attention is paid to them, including a military office dedicated solely to monitoring and decreasing their prevalence. More attention is also being paid to the unique mental health challenges that women face in the military.

The truth is that military service for women is amazing, frustrating, empowering, and sometimes downright bizarre. Consequently, Id like to focus on some of the less visible hurdles that women face, which in turn feed the larger challenges that occur.

Thank You For Paving The Way For Me

Anne Krause, Air Force, 1990-99

I graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1990. Every time I met a woman who graduated from the academy in the previous decade, I thanked her for paving the way for me. It never really dawned on me that I was helping to blaze the trail for others until I went to an air show with my family many years later. I sought out the Thunderbirds executive officer to say hello. The first thing she said to me was, Thank you for paving the way for me. That remark caught me by complete surprise. I remain inspired to climb with one hand while extending the other to help another woman up.

There Are Free And Supplemental Housing Benefits

There are two housing options for members of the military. They can live on base for free or can choose to can live off-base and receive a housing stipend to help cover their expenses. This benefit is over and above the usual pay and bonuses that are received. When on-base housing is available, women can take advantage of this to accrue savings and increase their financial stability.

How Racially And Ethnically Diverse Is The Military

Federal agencies categorize race into five groupswhite, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. Ethnicity, which the government considers distinct from race, is divided into two categories: Hispanic or Latino, and not Hispanic or Latino. The racial and ethnic diversity of enlisted recruits varies considerably across the services and between genders.

Racial diversity decreases at the upper echelons of the military. While the officer corps has similar levels of racial diversity as the general population, those with higher ranksgenerals in the air force, army, and marine corps, and admirals in the coast guard and navyare disproportionately white. There is an even greater ethnic disparity in the top ranks.

Sexual Assault Is A Real Threat

Of all the risks to women in the military, sexual assault is the most widely publicized. While male soldiers are also at risk, women have a heightened risk in comparison.

The risk is highest for those stationed on ships at some high-risk installations studied in 2014, 10% of women were assaulted and that’s only what was reported. At the two most dangerous, 15% of women were assaulted. The risk is much lower for most military bases, but because studies are done after the fact, it’s impossible to know which bases are the most dangerous currently.

All branches of the military have been working to improve these sobering stats, but between 2016 and 2018, the number of assaults actually increased. Some of the pinpointed factors included alcohol use and off-base parties. Victims also had certain common qualities, like joining the military at a younger age and having a prior history of sexual abuse.

On average, one in 17 civilian women will be sexually assaulted in the US. For military women ages 17 to 20, the risk is one in eight, and around 25% of women report sexual harassment at some point during their time of service.

But Being Married Isnt Enough

When I did get married it was like I became a different person â my commander and more senior officers in the battalion began inviting us to dinner and taking an interest in my personal life. Married coworkers suddenly wanted to be friends. I could casually talk about my weekend in the office without feeling like I was being judged, because since I was married, I could do no wrong.

The grace period lasted a few months before the inquiries started rolling in for both of us â when were we going to have a baby? Were we trying yet? Were we having trouble? I was reminded constantly that having a child was what would make me âwhole,â and what would make us an inseparable family unit. When I would assert â again and again â that my husband and I were in no way ready to start a family, I was met with the same look of mixed disdain and pity. I was 25 years old.

Being Single Can Set You Back

Why You Should Join the Air Force !

While military culture advances just like the rest of society, itâs always lagging behind by a few decades. So, folks in the military tend to get married and have families young. When I got to my first unit I was a unicorn â a 23-year old single female officer.

When I told my commander I wasnât married, he asked when I planned to be. When I said I wasnât planning on tying the knot anytime soon, he felt compelled to ask why, and then warn me that I needed to be extra careful about how I behaved in front of my soldiers and not divulge any details about my personal life. In other words, if a single guy came in hung over and full of stories from last nightâs hookup, he got a high five. I, on the other hand, would get stamped âopen for business,â and my reputation would suffer.

Gender Discrimination Is Alive And Well

Unfortunately, though, gender equality issues in the military go beyond rules about what positions women are allowed to serve in. The individuals we spoke with were clear that gender discrimination is alive and well, and if the military can’t abolish blatant sexism, they won’t see equality for many more years.

Windham describes a not-atypical scenario: “Sometimes, before you even check into a command , they will look at the orders of the incoming personnel and see that it’s a woman. The first thing people start talking about is, I wonder if she’s hot, I wonder if she puts out, I wonder if she’s fat.

Windham adds that she’s actually been told she “shouldn’t try and work outside of because that’s what girls are good at.” The problem is pervasive, and is often reinforced by those in upper commanda serious obstacle to overcome if the military as a whole is ever going to progress beyond these views.

Getting Ready To Train

An excellent way to determine your fitness level is to undergo a fitness appraisal.

Talk to your doctor before starting a fitness routine or appraisal, particularly if you have a heart condition, feel chest pain, lose your balance or consciousness, have a bone or joint problem, or take drugs for a blood pressure or heart condition. Tell your doctor about the kinds of activities you want to do and follow his or her advice.

What Military Life Is Like For A Woman

Physical Training

I knew military life was going to be difficult. Before joining, I’d only talked to males about the Army, and they all pretty much said the same stuff:

  • “There’s a lot of PT .”
  • “You’re gonna get very tired.”
  • : “It’s not that bad.”

No offense, guys, but I’d say the ego got in the way of the truth. But to be honest, Basic Training was just bad, not overly terrible. Even though the guys’ comments showed a knack for understatement, I really did expect it to be worse. There were times when I thought I was going to die, but there were also times when I thought everything was too easy.

And, in case you’re wondering, Basic Training is harder physically for a female than it is for a male.

Push-ups are easier for males, and the Army is all about its push-ups. Ruck marches are also easier for males.

But, in sit-ups we are equals! I can honestly say that I could probably beat most guys in sit-ups. I can even say I know one woman who can do 112 sit-ups in two minutes. Just think: she’s almost pumping out one sit-up per second. Amazing, isn’t it?

Unexpected Things That Made Basic Training Terrible

Ruck sacks are heavy.

Two unexpected things make Basic Training terrible for females: other females and ruck marches.

My Drill Sergeant Looked Out For Me

Every time I mention joining the military, everyone tells me that it

Sgt. Joelene Schwebke, Army, 2012-Present

After graduating from college in 2008, I really wanted to serve in the military. Unfortunately, this meant I would have to hide that I am a lesbian. At the time, being openly gay in the service was forbidden. In 2011, my recruiter called me back and told me that the dont ask, dont tell policy had been repealed. I joined the Army in late 2011, and I was fortunate to have a wonderful drill sergeant, who made me feel comfortable during basic training and didnt treat me differently. He made a point to let me know he wouldnt tolerate any discrimination toward me.
