What Not To Do

What To Expect in the ARMY: ARMY HEIGHT & WEIGHT STANDARDS (AR 600-9)

Do not take pills or supplements to lose the weight. They check your urine and you have to tell them all of the medication that you have taken in the past week. I told them about a Midol that I had taken two days before, and I was disqualified for two weeks because the doctor said that it causes water weight loss.

You could always take the pills and just not tell them. However, this runs the risk of something funky coming up in the urine test, which will lead to you being disqualified for a lot longer .

A simple way to lose weight is to sweat. This will not be a permanent loss, and the weight will return as soon as you rehydrate, so this is done the night before. Don’t start to dehydrate yourself too soon, because it will cause you to become weak and not perform as well at the MEPS station. There are a few wrestling/weightlifting techniques to lose this water weight.

The first is using plastic wrap. Any type of standard kitchen-grade plastic wrap will work. You wrap the plastic wrap around your body, touching your skin, on as many places as possible, especially your stomach and thighs. Then dress in layers of clothing to begin to overheat yourself. You can try just sleeping like this, or if you are farther away from you goal for the next morning, work out with the wrap on. This can also be achieved wearing multiple layers of clothing and a trash bag.

Army Recruiting Advice On Preparing To Meet Physical Standards

The Army has some standard advice for anyone considering a career as a soldier. Good body composition, the Army official site reminds, is best gained through proper diet and exercise. Examples of poor body composition are underdeveloped muscle groups, or excessive body fat. What should a potential recruit do to prepare for the measurements and weigh-ins they will be required to perform at the recruit level?

The Army philosophy in this area includes the idea that poor body composition, has a negative effect on appearance, self-esteem, and negatively influences attitude and morale and Army recruiting literature encourages applicants to get involved in a fitness program that incorporates running, swimming, and cycling.

Consult a physician before starting any new fitness regimen, especially a rigorous one. Do not rely on fad diets, exercise programs that start only weeks before your weigh-in date, etc.

Your recruiter will have advice for you on what kinds of fitness programs will best prepare you for basic training, but you may need to use a modified version of such a program if you are struggling to meet the physical standards mentioned above.

How To Lose It Correctly

Army Physical Fitness Height And Weight Standards ...

Losing weight is a fairly simple process. You have to take in fewer calories than you burn during the day. Most people burn roughly 2,000 calories a day, so to maintain weight, a normal person would aim to consume about 1,850 calories a day. I generally aim for less calories than needed, simply because I know that I am bad about “secret calories,” or consuming calories without realizing.

It’s generally accepted that one pound of weight is about 3,500 calories. So to lose a pound, you would need a negative amount of 3,500 calories. To lose weight healthily, you should never consume less than 1,000 calories in a day.

To see the time that it would take you to lose the amount, multiply the number of pounds that you need to lose times 3,500. Then figure out your caloric goal. For example are you aiming for 1,500 calories a day? Then factor in the amount of exercise that you plan to do daily .

Depending on your current metabolism, if you cut your calories down to 1,500 a day and run/walk/jog five miles a day, then you will lose about two pounds a week. At first, you may lose slightly more, so as your body adjusts, you may need to add more exercise or eat slightly less.

If you cut your daily intake to 1,000 and continue to run 5 miles a day, then you should be losing about a pound every two days. I do not suggest eating less than 1,000 calories a day, especially if you plan to exercise vigorously.

Meeting The Weight And Body

The past decade has brought considerable progress in developing new technologies and scientifically sound methods of assessing body fat and setting appropriate weight and body-fat standards in support of the military’s body composition, fitness, and readiness goals. DOD-wide uniformity in the use of these methodologies and standards is being sought to promote maximum objectivity and fairness to service members across the four services. As discussed earlier, a revised DOD Instruction has been issued that presents new DOD standards for maximum weight-for-heights corresponding to a minimum BMI of 25 and a maximum BMI of 27.5 . In addition, this policy also mandates the implementation of a single circumferential equation to estimate percent body fat for men and one for women to be used by all the services.

The weight and body-fat standards of the military services were predicated on the need for the highest level of physical performance in adverse environments, and to a lesser degree on the image that the individual may convey of the military. These standards theoretically take precedent even when individuals demonstrate an ability to perform their assigned tasks in an exceptional manner.

Preparing Your Body Before Serving

Improving your CR and muscle stamina will have a positive impact on your body’s composition and will result in less fat. Excessive body fat detracts from the other fitness components, reduces performance, and negatively affects your health. But a person’s body fat depends on many factors, including body type, and you should not compare your body fat to someone else’s.

Good body composition is best gained through proper diet and exercise. Examples of poor body composition are underdeveloped muscle groups, or excessive body fat. Poor body composition causes problems for the Army and the individual Soldier. For example, Soldiers with inadequate muscle development cannot perform as well as those with proper development. When a Soldier is overweight, his or her physical ability to perform declines and the risk of developing disease and injury increases. Also, Soldiers with high percentages of body fat often have lower APFT scores than those with lower percentages. Poor body composition, especially obesity, has a negative effect on appearance, self-esteem, and negatively influences attitude and morale. Continue to monitor your height and weight standards and overall body composition through our Army BMI calculator above and set goals for bettering muscle development. You can read more about improving your body composition with exercise and preparing for the APFT here.

Army Height And Weight Rules For New Recruits

The same basic standards may apply to new recruits as for currently serving military members, but the process for dealing with future soldiers who dont currently meet physical standards is obviously quite different than for those who have already completed basic training.

New recruits who are assessed as not meeting Army physical standards including height/weight issues will be given an opportunity to come up to those standards through organized fitness programs and other means.

The biggest difference for recruits is that meeting the Armys standards here is the gateway to starting a military career for those currently serving those standards must be met in order to continue serving.

Army Height Minimums And Maximums

According to the United States Army official site for recruiting, the height range for new recruits starts at 50 and ends at 68 for men and 410 to 68 for women. This is the range specified on the Army official site that displays its height and weight calculator. The minimum age for these requirements is 17.

Body Composition Rules

Body Mass Versus Body Fat

U.S. Army Recruiting advises new applicants that the Army view of body composition is defined as the amount of body fat a Soldier has in comparison to their total body mass.

Army regulations spell out height and weight requirements and if those requirements are exceeded, you can still qualify by being below the specified body fat for your age based on standards.

It happens to the best of us. We get lazy and quit watching what we eat, or we become stressed and lose the time or motivation to exercise. However, if you have plans to join the United States Armed Forces, then those bad habits will only bring you grief.

I’m speaking from experience. I dropped thirty pounds in a few months for the Air Force, and I am still struggling to stay at weight while I’m in the delayed enlistment program.

If you are truly committed to joining a branch of the military, then from experience, I suggest that you lose the weight the right way. Otherwise if you cheat your way , it will only cause you more headaches while you wait to ship out to basic training.

So here I will explain how to lose the weight correctly. However, I will also talk about a few ways to drop a few pounds too quickly, because chances are if you are going to do that, then you’ve already made you mind up about it. The least I can do is to help you do it the healthiest way possible so that you do not cause yourself long-term bodily harm.

More often, the physical activities of the Army ensure their weight and body fat composition stays within limits. However, for those assigned desk duties, they have to get into a regular physical fitness routine to keep their bodies fit.

The army does not condone overweight individuals and soldiers with poor body composition for prolonged periods since this may lead to a decreased individual performance thereby causing disruption to their respective units.

Thats why everyone must be physically fit and have a low body fat composition.

Size & Weight Requirements To Be A Pilot

Pilots of both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters typically need to meet certain physical requirements intended to promote the safety of passengers and crew. Among these are requirements for excellent vision, normal color vision, and height or weight requirements. Requirements vary according to the aircraft and employer.

Getting Fit With Fitt

As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:

  • Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
  • Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
  • A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.
