Military Enlistment Age Limits
The minimum and maximum enlistment age for joining the military differs by each branch of the military. The earliest is 17 with parental consent and the maximum is 39 but see below for the specific age limits by each branch of service.
This does not mean that the age requirements are not similar, but there is no Defense Department-wide standard. Each branch of service sets their own.
Here are things to know about military enlistment age limits and other criteria for joining the military.
Air Force Raises Enlistee Age Limit From 27 To 39
WASHINGTON Thanks to a new Air Force policy announced Tuesday, enlisted recruits can now experience the joys of basic training in their late 30s.
The Air Force raised the maximum age for enlisted accession from 27 to 39, meaning it may now be the best choice for those who feel the call to military service later in life.
The maximum age for Army enlisted recruits is 35, while the Navy and Marines cap recruit ages at 34 and 28, respectively.
Under federal law, the oldest recruit any military branch can enlist is 42, although each service sets its own policy within that limit.
Annette Crawford, a spokeswoman for the Air Force Recruiting Service at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, said officials would be watching to see whether the aches and pains of approaching middle age are too much for older recruits.
With the change, if we see a higher initial training attrition or increased physical injuries the Air Force recruiting commander can set a more restrictive age if necessary, she said.
The increased maximum age is for all Air Force enlisted occupations rather than being targeted at increasing accessions in certain areas, she said.
The new policy comes at a time of a declining defense budget, a shrinking military and falling recruiting goals, however. From 2009 to 2013, the number of recruits dropped from nearly 32,000 to just over 26,000. While recruiting goals for 2014 are still being finalized, theyre likely to fall again.

Join The Military As An Enlisted Member
Enlisted members make up most of the military workforce. They receive training in a job specialty and do most of the hands-on work. Usually, youll sign up for four years of active duty and four years inactive. After youve completed your active duty time, you can either extend your contract or re-enlist if you want to continue serving.
Officers make up a much smaller part of the workforce. To join as an officer, you typically must have a four-year college degree and complete an officer program. You compete for promotion to continue your career. Most officers are managers who plan and direct operations. Others are professionals like doctors and lawyers. Officers get paid more than enlisted members and enjoy certain other benefits.
You dont have to join as an officer to become one though. You can join as an enlisted member and attend officer training later on.
Not All Branches Are The Same
When it comes to basic requirements, not all branches of the military are the same. The Air Force typically closes the door to recruits at age 39 The Marines close it at 28, and both the Army and Navy limit the maximum age to 34. The Coast Guard has both doors open to applicants as old as 39, according to Military.com. All the Coast Guard asks is that you score at least 45 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, have no more than two dependents and be willing to serve on or around the water.

Active Duty Air Force Age Limit
Like the other branches of the military, the minimum and maximum age you can join the Air Force will depend on which career path you take.
Here are the minimum and maximum age limits for the Air Force in 2021:
- Enlisted: The minimum age to join as an enlisted is 17, and the maximum age is 39.
- Officer: The minimum age to join as an officer is 18, and the maximum age is 39.
Exceptions are made for those with healthcare experience, attorneys, clergy, and prior military enlistment. A waiver will be required.
In this scenario, the minimum age is 18 and the maximum age is 48.
What Is The Maximum Age In Order To Join The Military
While most men and women decide to enlist in the military immediately after high school or college, sometimes older individuals consider serving in the military as a second or even third career. Most branches of the armed forces allow people to join into their mid-30s. Former service members even have the opportunity to re-enlist past the usual cutoff age. While restricting military service to people in their 20s and early 30s may seem unfair to some, the rigorous physical demands on enlistees is the reasoning behind the age restriction. Rep. Susan Davis of the Armed Services Committee personnel panel has said the risks outnumbered gains with older military personnel, who are more likely to become injured and take more time to recover than younger enlistees.

Getting Fit With Fitt
As a rule of thumb, ease into your activities, gradually increase each element of FITT, and end each session with a cool-down. For example:
- Begin with a 5- to 10-minute warm-up. Walking, biking or a slow jog will increase blood flow to the muscles and lightly increase your heart rate. Follow up with some light stretching of the muscles you will be using in your workout.
- Improving your overall fitness is most effectively done through a combination of 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic and strength exercises. The two sample fitness sessions below are based on Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology guidelines.
- A 5- to 10-minute cool-down helps return your body to its normal, pre-exercise condition. Suddenly stopping an intense workout can make you dizzy, nauseated or even faint. Walking, biking or a slow jog will gradually bring down your heart rate and relieve muscle soreness.

While the minimum age for pilots is 18, its very uncommon for a pilot to be that young.
The average age for Air Force pilots entering flight school is around 23 years old.
Before earning a slot at Undergraduate Pilot Training , the candidate must first meet with a selection board.
This board will determine whether or not youre competitive enough for a slot in UPT, and must be conducted before you reach 29 years of age.

Whats My Obligation If I Join The National Guard Or Military Reserves
Joining the military reserves or National Guard is a significant time commitment. This is true, especially at the beginning. You will get settled in your permanent unit. Then, you can expect to attend unit assembly, known as drill, one weekend per month. You will also participate in a two-week annual training each year.
- Initial training: As a new military member, you will attend your branchs basic military training. That may last from eight to 12 weeks. Depending on your job, you may also attend an advanced training course.
- Monthly drill: Youll need to drill for 48 periods or units per year. Most units drill one weekend per month. A typical weekend drill has four periods. Some military units have additional drilling requirements, which may include the weekday.
- Annual training: Youll also need to participate in annual training for two weeks per year.
- Activations: You may be activated to full-time service in a voluntary or involuntary status. This can be with your unit or individually. These activations may vary in length and location. They may include 30 days in a unit near your hometown. Or up to a year supporting a mission outside of the United States. Generally, you cannot opt out of involuntary action. This is because the military has ordered you to active service.
- Length of commitment: Your total contract may range from three to eight years. This depends on the branch of service and your specific occupation/job.
