Dont be afraid to sign paperwork that is required at later stages of the recruiting process. One such signature is required often before taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVABsigning that document does not obligate you to military service. But it is required for you to take the test if it is presented to you.

Military analysts who study recruitment say the impact of endless counterterrorism wars on who enlists and why remains to be seen, but its clear that family service will continue to be a main motivator.

Last year, all three of Anne Wilsons children reported to basic training within weeks of each other. Her 18-year-old daughter, Cadi, and her twin 22-year-old sons, Dominic and Maveric, all enlisted in the US Navy after their stepfather, a US Army veteran, encouraged them to take advantage of the educational benefits and travel that would enable them to leave their construction jobs in the small town. They were 2 and 5 years old, respectively, on 9/11.

Theres nothing where we live, there are no good jobs, said Anne, who also wanted to enlist when she was young but was stopped by her father, a veteran, who worried about the treatment of women in the military.

He said you sign those papers, you wont be breathing anymore, she remembered, laughing. So I get to live it through my kids, which is really nice. Their grandfathers, who both served in the Army, are proud as peacocks.

In The United Kingdom

During both world wars and a period after the second, military service was mandatory for at least some of the British population. At other times, techniques similar to those outlined above have been used. The most prominent concern over the years has been the minimum age for recruitment, which has been 16 for many years. This has now been raised to 18 in relation to combat operations. In recent years, there have been various concerns over the techniques used in army recruitment in relation to the portrayal of such a career as an enjoyable adventure.

Us Military Struggled To Attract National Guard And Reserve Troops But Met Targets For Full

The US military met its recruitment targets for full-time service members for the 2021 fiscal year, which ran from October 2020 to the end of September 2021, but had a more difficult time attracting National Guard and reserve recruits during the same period, according to Pentagon data.

For three quarters of a century Canadians have been recruited inside this country to fight in Israels military

Theres a Canadian law that makes it illegal for the armed forces of any foreign state to recruit soldiers within our borders, but youd never know it the way Israel and its supporters operate within this country.

The Foreign Enlistment Actstates:

Any person who, within Canada, recruits or otherwise induces any person or body of persons to enlist or to accept any commission or engagement in the armed forces of any foreign state or other armed forces operating in that state is guilty of an offence.

For three quarters of a century Canadians have been recruited inside this country to fight in Israels military. Finally, however, there is an organized effort to stop this practice.

Recently, a formal legal complaint was delivered to Justice Minister David Lametti detailing recruitment effort by the Israeli military inside Canada and calling on the federal government to apply charges under the Foreign Enlistment Act where appropriate. Additionally, an open letter was released today demanding the Trudeau government take action to ban the Israel Defense Forces from conducting any domestic recruitment efforts.

Lone soldiers are Jewish citizens of a foreign country serving in the Israeli army. It is estimated that as many as 6,000 such soldiers with dual citizenship are currently enlisted in the IDF.

This Years Numbers So Far

The Army has met about 40% of its enlisted recruiting mission for FY22, with just over three months left in the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. The final quarter the summer is typically when the services recruit the most candidates following high school graduation.

Space Force will also likely make its goal, according to U.S. military officials, but as the newest branch of the military it only looks to recruit about 500 Guardians this fiscal year.

The U.S. Air Force, on the other hand, has to recruit roughly 100 times as many airmen, about 50,000, but is currently more than 4,000 below where it should be at this point in the fiscal year. While the Air National Guard and Reserve are unlikely to meet their goals, the active duty are taking it week to week, according to a senior U.S. military official. We are hopeful that the active duty will meet their goal. Hopeful, but not certain, the official said.

The last time the Air Force missed its goal was fiscal 1999, and the last time before that was 1979.

Navy officials, who have been using the summer movie Top Gun: Maverick to try to attract recruits, say they hope to ultimately meet their active-duty and overall strength goals.

The active-duty Marine Corps is likely to make its recruiting goals this year. The Marine in charge of manpower, however, recently told Congress that 2022 is arguably the most challenging recruiting year since the inception of the all-volunteer force.

Wartime Recruitment Strategies In The Us

Prior to the outbreak of World War I, military recruitment in the US was conducted primarily by individual states. Upon entering the war, however, the federal government took an increased role.

The increased emphasis on a national effort was reflected in World War I recruitment methods. Authors Peter A. Padilla and Mary Riege Laner define six basic appeals to these recruitment campaigns: patriotism, job/career/education, adventure/challenge, social status, travel, and miscellaneous. Between 1915 and 1918, 42% of all army recruitment posters were themed primarily by patriotism. And though other themes â such as adventure and greater social status â would play an increased role during World War II recruitment, appeals to serve one’s country remained the dominant selling point.

Recruitment without conscription

Indeed, recommendations made by the President’s Commission continue to work in present-day recruitment efforts. Understanding the need for greater individual incentive, the US military has re-packaged the benefits of the GI Bill. Though originally intended as compensation for service, the bill is now seen as a recruiting tool. Today, the GI Bill is “no longer a reward for service rendered, but an inducement to serve and has become a significant part of recruiter’s pitches.”

How Military Recruiting Works: The Basics

Military recruiters are made, not born. Most recruiters are themselves recruited or volunteer to retrain out of other military careers. All military members who become recruiters must attend an intensive technical training course. Not all succeed in passing these courses, making the career field stronger through a process of weeding out.

Once graduating from the training, these individuals are assigned where the military feels they are most needed and they begin learning their new community and how to find the best candidates there.

The Army is offering flexible 2-year to 6-year contracts, duty stations of choice, a program where enlistees can be stationed with their friends, and a $10,000 quick-ship bonus.

Some of the service branches are offering unprecedented bonuses for signing up or re-enlisting, up to $50,000 for certain specialties in the Army, Air Force and the Navy.

But one U.S. military official said bonuses can only help so much. We can throw money at the problem all we want, but until we change how young people see us in uniform, we are going to struggle to get them to raise their right hands.

Questions To Ask A Recruiter

A military recruiter can help answer questions about service, which can provide a positive but realistic assessment of opportunities. Recruiters from multiple Service branches may share a location, and you should feel encouraged to speak to more than one.

Parents should also feel comfortable talking to recruiters. It is a recruiter’s job to address concerns and provide quality information to those interested in serving and those close to them.

As the military struggles to meet its recruiting goals, lawmakers expressed concerns Wednesday, April 27, that personnel shortages could be on the horizon unless something changes.

To put it bluntly, Im worried were now in the early days of a long-term threat to the all-volunteer force, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, said.

During a hearing in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee, representatives from all five branches of the military maintained that force readiness is not yet in danger. But Lt. Gen. David Ottignon, deputy commandant for the Marine Corps manpower and reserve affairs, acknowledged that this has been arguably the most challenging year in recruiting history.

The Army has only reached about 23% of its active-duty recruiting goal of 60,000 in the first five months of fiscal year 2022, according to Lt. Gen. Gary Brito, the Armys deputy chief of staff for personnel.

However, in a provided to lawmakers, Brito said the Army remains focused on quality over quantity and is confident it can attract talented recruits while also modestly reducing its end strength figures in fiscal years 2022 and 2023. Brito added that retention has been strong across the Armys active-duty, Reserve, and National Guard components.

Tillis characterized the issue as a two-front recruiting war, with a shrinking pool of eligible candidates on one side and lack of interest among qualified Americans on the other.

    COLORADO SPRINGS The sergeant in charge of one of the busiest Army recruiting centers in Colorado, Sgt. First Class Dustin Comes, joined the Army, in part, because his father served. Now two of his four children say they want to serve, too. And he will not be surprised if the other two make the same decision once they are a little older.

    Hey, if thats what your calling is, I encourage it, absolutely, said Sergeant Comes, who wore a dagger-shaped patch on his camouflage uniform, signifying that he had been in combat.

    Enlisting, he said, enabled him to build a good life where, despite yearlong deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he felt proud of his work, got generous benefits, never worried about being laid off, and earned enough that his wife could stay home to raise their children.

    Show me a better deal for the common person, he said.

    More than half of the young Americans who answered the survey about 57% think they would have emotional or psychological problems after serving in the military. Nearly half think they would have physical problems.

    They think theyre going to be physically or emotionally broken after serving, said one senior U.S. military official familiar with the recruiting issues, who believes a lack of familiarity with military service contributes to that perception.

    Among Americans surveyed by the Pentagon who were in the target age range for recruiting, only 13% had parents who had served in the military, down from approximately 40% in 1995. The military considers parents one of the biggest influencers for service.

    An expert on military personnel policy says that middle class parents, including those who are newly middle class, often encourage their kids to go to college before selecting a career, which hurts recruiting for enlisted personnel. Changing the mind of parents is the really tough part, particularly if these are parents who worked really hard for their children to go to college, said Kate Kuzminski from the Center for a New American Security. She noted that recruiting ads increasingly target the parents of potential recruits. Thats where theyre trying to win the hearts and minds.

    Air Forces Enlisted Recruitment Pipeline Is Drying Up General Warns

    The Air Force is fighting an uphill battle to meet this years recruiting goals, the two-star general in charge of recruitment warned in an email earlier this month.

    We have warning lights flashing, Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas told Air Force Recruiting Service employees on Jan. 10 in a letter verified by Air Force Times.

    Its a stark contrast to just four months ago, when the Air Force said it hit its service-wide recruiting and staffing goals for the first time in five years. About 501,000 troops currently serve in the Department of the Air Force, including 326,000 active duty airmen and Space Force guardians.


    But that good fortune may not last in 2022.

    Two years into COVID-19 and amidst U.S. labor shortages, our pool of qualified applicants is about half of what it should be at this point in the year, Thomas said in an emailed statement. We believe FY22 goals are attainable but will be tougher to accomplish than in at least a dozen years.

    The Air Force hopes to bring more than 26,000 airmen, largely enlisted, onto active duty by Sept. 30. As of the end of December, it was nearly one-quarter of the way to that goal, according to data the service provided to Air Force Times. So, recruiters met their active duty goal for the first quarter of fiscal 2022, but recruiting slows down this time each year. The current pool, smaller than in previous years, may not be large enough to overcome it.

    How To Fix It

    To tackle the growing crisis, the Pentagon is reviewing some of the more than 250 disqualifiers for service, including some medical conditions that have historically required recruits to obtain a waiver for service or kept individuals out of uniform completely, according to multiple defense and U.S. military officials.

    For example, in the past ailments like asthma and ADHD could disqualify someone from serving if the recruit had symptoms after their 13th or 14th birthdays. But now the Pentagon is reviewing whether individuals who have been asymptomatic for a shorter period of time could join without a waiver.

    The military is also discussing allowing service members to use platforms like TikTok to attract recruits. In 2020, President Donald Trump ordered a ban on the use of the social media platform because the Chinese company that owns it collects biometric information on users.

    We have to be where the recruits are, and TikTok is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world, one defense official involved in personnel issues said.

    The Pentagon is also looking to increase recruitment by targeting more influencers like parents, teachers and coaches, by creating recruiting stations with multiple services in them rather than service specific locations, and even moving recruiting offices to better neighborhoods, according to multiple U.S. military and defense officials.

    The Pentagon may also put more effort into recruiting eligible DACA recipients, said officials.
