I Was My Units First Female Officer

How The Military Changed Me | My Military Story

Micki Duran, Marine Corps, 2006-17

I cherish my time in the Marine Corps, but there were many challenges, especially as the first female officer at my first unit. Once, during a meeting about a fun physical-fitness event we could put on for Marines, someone insinuated that I could be a cheerleader. Another time, I sent a researched and thoughtful email to my peers about how to address a group consisting of many men and one woman. Later, at an alcohol-fueled unit event, a peer and his wife both yelled over the bar noise that despite that email, I wasnt a bitch after all.

How To Read Military Time

When keeping hours in this fashion, the day starts at midnight and is written as 00:00. The last minute of the day is written as 23:59, or one minute before the next midnight. Sometimes you may see 00:00 written as 24:00. Both are acceptable. A usage example showing the 12 hour clock vs military time would be a time table showing 4:00 pm to 12:00 midnight. This would be written as 16:00 24:00. Another example highlighting the difference between the two would be to show that 10:15 am is written as 10:15 in military time but 2:30 pm is written as 14:30.

This method of keeping time is most commonly used by the military, government, public transportation, hospitals, meteorologists, astronomers, those employed in emergency services, and also with computers. When speaking in military time, 07:00 may be stated as zero seven hundred or oh seven hundred. Also, in the military, these time stamps are often written without the colon, so 07:52 would rather be written 0752.

Time stamps referencing Greenwich Mean Time is denoted by a Z at the end, and is written as 0752Z. The local time is denoted by a J at the end, and the eastern time zone is denoted by an R at the end. Each of the zones have a corresponding letter and name.

Identity Theft Is A Threat To Soldiers And It’s Just As Bad For Veterans

You might think that if you work for the Army, you’d be safe from the threat of identity theft, but let’s get honest and clear about this risk. The truth is that identity theft is rampant for service members, veterans, and their families.

If you haven’t memorized your social security number by now, you will within the first few days of in-processing. Throughout your entire military career, it will be used so often and on so much paperwork that you will get numb to it. Why? There are so many people in the military that the quickest, easiest way to identify each individual is to do so by number. You’ll notice a lot of private sector companies do this as well.

Almost every form you fill out provides another opportunity for a criminal to get your name, SSN, and date of birth. In minutes, you can become an identity theft casualty. If you’re deployed and fighting in the latest war, you might not find out that your personal information has been stolen until months after the fact! Instead of confetti in your ticker-tape parade, you’ll have bills and more paperwork to contend with, but this time the paperwork will be for all the credit bureaus and collection agencies you’ll have to communicate with to sort out your identity theft issues. Oh, and this doesn’t end after your time serving is complete. It’s just as easy to nab a veteran’s identity as it is to steal an active soldier’s identity.

But for now, a soldier must fight on two fronts: to protect his country and his identity.

Who Decides Whether My Charges Should Proceed To Trial

The initial decision whether or not to proceed with a charge is made by a CO or superior commander. In the case of a charge laid by the NIS, if the CO or superior commander decides not to proceed, the NIS can have the charge referred through the chain of command to the Director of Military Prosecutions where it will be reviewed for trial by court martial. The DMP can forward that charge, or any other charge supported by the evidence, for trial by court martial.

Certain serious offences cannot be tried by summary trial and such charges are automatically forwarded through the chain of command to DMP.

‘which One Is The Real Me’ A Veteran’s Transition And Identity Crisis

What Military Job Is Best For Me

The opinions expressed in this op-ed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Military.com

I retired from the Marine Corps almost two years ago. Like most veterans, I found the transition from military to civilian life a struggle — a tougher struggle than I had anticipated. Military leaders do their best to prepare you with the mandatory transition classes. Everyone tells you the transition is going to be difficult.

But they can only tell you so much. Everyone’s battle is different. I’ve realized it’s just something you have to experience for yourself to fully grasp the reality of the obstacles you will encounter. For me, I found that one of my trickier struggles was with my identity.

I spent the better part of two decades in a culture that is, for all intents and purposes, its own world within the rest of the world. Military culture is … different. But it’s not like I was traveling back from another planet. I wasn’t so far removed from the rest of the world while I was in the Corps that I didn’t understand what I was transitioning back to.

But there is a marked divide.

Serving in the military changes you. The shades and degrees of change vary for everyone, but no one is ever the same as before they came in. We develop thick skins, sharp tongues, quick wits, dark senses of humor, and intolerance for pretty much everything. This results in individuals who are generally aggressive, abrasive, crude, and brutally honest.

In Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2012, I met my future spouse, Col. Ginger Wallace of the Air Force. At the time of our marriage in 2015, we were the highest-ranking dual-military couple to enter into a same-sex marriage.

Does A Regular Auto Salvage Carry Junked Military Vehicles

How The Military Changed Me

At the auto junkyards near me, there are no military vehicles. I have been all over the US visiting junkyards and honestly finding military equipment is pretty rare. These vehciles are exclusive to military salvages.

Now with that being said, that doesnt mean you cant find interchangeable parts at a standard auto salvage. If you know who manufactured the military vehicle or know where the government sourced parts from, you can use a regular auto salvage to find parts.

What Happens If I Am Held In Custody

If you are to be held in pre-trial custody, you will normally be kept in cells in a unit or base guardroom. You may be placed in civilian custody if it is not practical to keep you in military custody. You will be informed of the name and rank of the person who ordered that you be held in custody and the reason why you are being held.

Within 24 hours of your arrest and being placed in custody, you will be given the opportunity to express your views concerning your release to a custody review officer or an officer designated by your CO).

Within 48 hours of your arrest and being placed in custody, a custody review officer will determine whether you will be released or kept in custody. For certain serious offences, termed “designated offences”, the custody review officer must keep you in custody.

If you are kept in custody, you are entitled to a hearing before a military judge as soon as practicable to determine whether you are to be retained in custody. During that hearing, you are entitled to be represented by military legal counsel from the Directorate of Defence Counsel Services at no expense to you, or by a civilian legal counsel at your own expense.

Many Days I Contemplated Suicide

Florence Shmorgoner, Marine Corps, 2014-Present

In 2015, I was sexually assaulted, and I waited until 2017 to report it because I was scared that I would not be believed or, worse, that I would be deemed a troublemaker in my platoon. It took about a year for the whole process to end. I was fortunate enough to go to counseling and see a psychologist and was found to have depression, anxiety disorder and PTSD all stemming from the assault. I struggled with my self-worth more than I would like to admit. Many days, I contemplated suicide. Not because I felt like a burden but because the pain I felt every day was nearly unbearable. To this day, I still have nightmares of the assault. But I have found peace, which I have learned is all that matters.

How Does A Military Salvage Yard Get Vehicles

Pray, Pray for us, Military love

Salvage military vehicles come in from different sources. Some from government auctions, others directly from the Defense Logistics Agency , and others from the public who already own a surplus military vehicle.

There are many regulations around the buying and selling of military equipment. Though typically once a vehicle has reach the salvage many of those regulations and requirements have already been met.

    S For Joining The Military

Start by doing some research about your options for joining the military. Learn about the six active-duty branches and their part-time counterparts. Know the main differences between officers and enlisted members. And explore the career fields you can enter for each branch.

Once you know which branch youre considering, contact a recruiter. A recruiter will give you an overview and answer your questions about that service. If youre interested in more than one branch, contact a recruiter for each. If youre interested in joining as an officer, the recruiter will explain any options you may be eligible for.

These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if youre accepted, taking the oath of enlistment. From there youll receive orders for basic training, usually to start within a few weeks. If you enrolled in a delayed entry program, youll go home and get orders for basic training within a year.

How the Military Taught Me Time Management

Staff Sgt. Kate Cole, Army, 2008-Present

I served in the Army for nine years as someone else. About two years ago, I was able to start serving openly as a transgender woman. Ive faced discrimination since Ive come out and lost some friends, but it has been worth it. Ive gained a lot personally and professionally and have become part of a community that is open and willing to embrace change. Ive had several soldiers tell me Ive changed their views on not only transgender service members but also female service members being in combat arms.

    Use Outside The Military

According to the International Telecommunication Union the Military Alphabet is not just for the armed forces. As we explain further in the History section of this page, this alphabet was actually developed by the International Civilian Aviation Organization as a set of terms that would be mutually comprehensible across the international community. The Able Baker Alphabet, like Morse Code, was designed to minimize miscommunication and is used in non-military settings where codes and clarity are key.

Aircraft Communication Military Alphabet Uses and Notes

Flight coordinates and passenger names are communicated using the Military Alphabet.

Pilots rely on the Automatic Terminal Information Service , which provides a continuous broadcast of weather information, runway logistics, and other vital information. Updates are assigned different Military Alphabet letters so pilots know how current its updates are. ATIS also features a lot of Military letters and numbers to communicate logistical data.

The military alphabet is used to make up Squawk Codes, officially known as Aircraft Transponder Codes, which is used to distinguish flights and aircrafts by air traffic control.

Aviators often use many of the same prowords and slang terms as the military, and conduct radio communication using similar norms. For example, Roger/Negative/Over/Break are just as foundational to aircraft communication as military radio communication.

    Women Sex And The Military

The unspoken message that the military continues to convey is that war is for men and women should stay away. Half of all women in the military are assigned to traditional roles such as cooking, nursing, and secretarial duties.

Rape and sexual harassment occur frequently in the armed forces. One report stated that 64 percent of women in the military have experienced sexual harassment. Often men use rank to try to get sexual favors. Women who refused to comply have been labeled lesbians.
