Is Being A Military Officer Worth It

I advise both Enlisted and Officers. The short answer is yes there is definitely value in being an officer over enlisted. If you do not, having been an officer the opportunities that are going to be available to you at transition are extremely more valuable. I do recommend the ROTC route or Military Academy.

General Paths To Becoming A Military Officer

As a rule of thumb, there are five primary options to serve in the U.S. military as a commissioned officer:

  • Enroll in a service academy
  • Join the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at a traditional college
  • Attend officer training school
  • Direct commission with a professional 4-year undergraduate degree
  • Climb up the enlisted rank ladder and complete officer training

    Different Types Of Promotion Opportunities

There are three promotion opportunities in all branches of the U.S. military: Below-the-Zone, In-the-Zone, and Above-the-Zone.

Below-the-Zone only applies for promotion to the rank of O-4 to O-6 . One year before they would be eligible for In-the-Zone consideration, about 10 percent of those recommended can be promoted Below-the-Zone.

Most promotions occur In-the-Zone. The selection rate for Above-the-Zone is only about 3 percent.

Two other significant factors in officers promotions are fitness reports and the nature of their current and past assignments. A poor fitness report may mean being passed over for promotion. An officer whose previous assignments didn’t have a significant degree of responsibility may also be passed over.

While there is a considerable amount of information available on how to become a member of Americas special operations forces, what often remains a mystery to those outside the military is how all those commissioned officers wound up leading these elite warriors, or at least absorbing the blame when things go wrong.

While there are great programs that allow civilians to essentially process directly into US Army Special Forces or the Navy SEALs, officers who wish to serve in these units have a less direct, and less sexy, route to take.

Army officers who wish to attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection for eventual service as a Green Beret, must first serve their lieutenant time in one of the Armys many conventional branches.

For many officers within the Army Special Forces community, they begin their career as an infantry officer.

To become an infantry officer, you can take one of many routes. First, you must earn a commission through Officer Candidate School , the Reserve Officers Training Corps , or the US Military Academy at West Point. All of these commissioning sources provide an active duty commission, and all of these options are available to enlisted soldiers and civilians.

The good news is, no one else is as aggressive, intelligent, or capable as an infantry NCO. You should feel fortunate to have earned the right to lead them.

Be An Officer By Enrolling In A Military Service Academy

The military service academies are federal institutions that offer a bachelors degree as well as training of future officers. The military service academies include:

Although applying and being accepted into the academy is a competitive process, academy cadets do not pay tuition or room and board. Cadets also receive a small monthly stipend of 35% of O-1 base pay. O-1 is the starting rank and first paygrade for military officers.

Upon completion of the academy, cadets become commissioned officers and begin serving in the military.

To determine eligibility for the academy, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, single without dependents, and be at least the age of 17 but less than 23 by July 1st of the year of entrance.

Additionally, applicants must meet academic and physical fitness standards and current enlisted service members are encouraged to apply.

Finally, candidates should obtain a congressional nomination from a local congressman or woman, two state senators, or vice president of the United States.

Y/o College Grad Want To Be An Army Officer What Are My Options

I graduated from a top 50 college with a 2.8 GPA because I was a degenerate fuck back then. I understand that even with a 300 APFT, letters of recommendation from ex and current O-5’s, and a very high ASVAB that OCS will overlook me. What are my options?

Can I go back to school and do 2 years of ROTC or will they turn me down? Can I do ROTC while working a part time job?

My biggest fear about ROTC is agreeing to an 8 year contract for the military and not getting Infantry…maybe you can confirm or relieve this fear.

What other options are there? Can I enlist and then go officer or ROTC or something?
