Army Basic Training: What To Expect

Basic training is the first step in preparing you to be a soldier. It starts with basic combat training or Army boot camp. Then comes specialized training in your career field or you may go to Officer Candidate School to master Army leadership skills.

In basic training, youll learn teamwork and discipline, and how to handle a weapon, rappel and march. The work is physically and mentally demanding. Youll experience stress and youll test your limits. Know what to expect and arrive prepared.

One Station Unit Training

With some MOSs, both the BCT and AIT phases of training are accomplished back-to-back at the same location, with the same instructors, as well as with the same fellow recruits. This is called One Station Unit Training, or OSUT. For example, the Infantry MOS consists of BCT followed by 12 weeks of Infantry training, all within the same location. A similar program is followed for cavalry scouts, tank crewmen, military police, and some engineer MOSs.

What To Wear To Basic Training Graduation

Recruits Who Carried COVID

At this ceremony, your soldier will likely be in their dress blue uniform the Army equivalent to a suit and tie. As a guest, you dont need to wear a formal outfit, but youll want to look nice to show appreciation for your soldiers accomplishment. Business casual or your Sunday best clothes are more than appropriate.

Remember, graduations are usually held outdoors in some of the hotter months of the year. Take all these considerations into account when deciding your layering, your footwear and, yes, also your hydration.

Bring your pride in your soldiers achievement, a camera to capture the moments, binoculars, sunscreen and a little cash for any commemorative items you may want. Definitely leave the alcohol, tobacco, weapons, silly string or other offensive items outside the gate. Its all about respecting how the process forged a fighter from your son, daughter, brother, sister whatever they are to you. At the same time, you can enjoy the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony, such as the national anthem, remarks from leadership, etc. and telling your soldier WELL DONE afterward.

The Benefits Of Joining The Marines

There are many benefits to signing up with the United States Marine Corps. For one, it teaches you life skills that can help you in any career field. Those who complete Basic Training and go on to receive advanced training become more marketable as they learn professional skills and gain leadership experience. It also teaches you discipline and important life skills such as how to work as a team. This is why Marine Corps recruits frequently outperform their peers in the workplace, both during and after their military service.

Your Drill Instructor Trains You To Shoot

Drill instructors have a role during your basic rifle training, but you get most of your training from a primary marksmanship instructor. Being a PMI is the only other way to be able to wear a campaign hat, the infamous Smokey Bear as some refer to it. Your drill instructor takes you to class and youre trained by someone with a more even temper.

Tips For Dealing With Mean Drill Instructors/sergeants:

  • Remember that its their job to make you feel overwhelmed sometimes, so you can learn just how capable you are even when pressed to your limit.
  • Understand that sometimes youre being singled out because youre strong, and that means having to push you that much harder for you to learn what youre capable of.
  • Keep in mind that your drill instructors/sergeants went through the same training and were overwhelmed at times just like you.

The First Few Weeks After Reception

The TRUTH About Navy Boot Camp – Is It Actually Hard?

From Week One to Week Three. The first thing you will notice about your new drill sergeant is that he or she appears to be a different species from the ones hanging around the Reception Battalion. He/she will appear to be much larger, much meaner, and very much louder. Army Drill Sergeants absolutely love push-ups. “Drop and Give me Twenty” is a favorite phrase . On this first day, pretty much everyone will get “dropped.” You will be dropped individually, in pairs, and as an entire platoon. Consider it time to work out and relieve some stress.

Week one is best characterized by a term known as TOTAL CONTROL. Total control is where the soldiers only do what they are told to do by their Drill Sergeants. The first few weeks of Basic Training is definitely NOT the time to find a better way of doing things. Soldiers arrive at the Basic Training Unit from the Reception Battalion and are immediately immersed in an environment where every move they make is scrutinized by the Drill Sergeant.

During the first week, you will start Physical Training and typically first thing in the morning. The typical day throughout Basic Training runs from 0430 , with lights out at 2100 .

During the first week or so, nobody will be able to do anything right. However, by the end of the first week, you will be able to do what you are told, when you are told, and exactly how you are told to do it. The word, “why?” will be surgically removed from your vocabulary before that first week is finished.

Weeks One Through Three Phase 1 Red Phase

In this adaptation phase, youll learn the fundamentals, traditions and ethics of what it means to be a soldier. You will learn how to comport yourself, how to address leadership and will be expected to recite the Warrior Ethos and the Soldiers Creed.

Youll receive briefings on basic first aid and sexual harassment and sexual assault awareness and prevention programs.

This phase includes intense physical training as well as road marches and formation marches. Youll be taking the Army Combat Fitness Test, which will challenge you on a strength deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release pushups, a sprint/drag/carry, leg tuck and 2-mile run.

An introduction to Chemical Radioactive Biological and Nuclear readiness also occurs during this phase. At the end of these three weeks, youll receive an Army Unit Patch to be worn on the left shoulder of your uniform.

Let The Pain Begin: Could You Survive Us Army Basic Training

Its ten weeks of heaven for some of the drill sergeants, or ten weeks of something a lot worse for the rest of the recruits. U.S. Army Basic Combat Training is everything youd expect from a military boot camp a lot of blood, sweat, and tears during the intense training. But you do get paid for your trouble a whole $3,800 plus room and board. The most difficult aspect is probably the isolation from your civilian friends and family.

After you sign your enlistment contract and get sworn in at a military intake facility, you get a ship date, and then youre going to either Fort Benning-Georgia, Fort Jackson-South Carolina, Fort Leonard Wood-Missouri, Fort Sill-Oklahoma, or Fort Knox-Kentucky.

Get Ready for the Toughest Lock-down Outside of Jail

Stress, Less Sleep, and Physical Training

You are expected to memorize and recite the general orders, plus other important creeds for new soldiers. The toughest part of this first three-week phase is the physical training with a lot less sleep than you are used to. Be ready to get down in the push-up position and stay there for long periods. The physical training prepares you to excel at the Army Combat Fitness Test. This used to be comprised of only pushups, sit-ups, and a two-mile run. However, the Army changed it to become more realistic and to measure the strength and agility you need in combat. So now trainees still do sit-ups and a two-mile run, but they also do dead-lifts, sprints and carries, power throws, and leg tucks.

They Yell At Us All Day And One Keeps Calling Us Crack Pipes

What was your experience during a Marine boot camp, and how hard was it ...

It doesnt matter who the recruit is, even if theyre famous or the child of a general, theyre getting yelled at in basic training. Many recruits find themselves shocked at the sheer amount of verbal abuse as well as the language used. The language might be toned down, but the volume never will be.

A Day In The Life Of A Basic Training Private

Your days in Basic Training are very repetitive. You begin bright and early at around 0500 and quickly make your bed, tidy up your personal area, brush your teeth, shave, and other personal hygiene. Following that, you meet with the rest of your squad and divide the cleaning duties and other tasks given to you. Then you are off to your first formation of the day with your rifle in hand. Your Drill Sergeant calls roll at formation and your platoon marches out to do morning physical training .

You will normally start off by running some warm up laps followed by stretches and calesthentics led by your Drill Sergeant. Next, you will return to your barracks and change into the approved uniform of the day. Save time by squaring away your uniforms ahead of time and have them ready to be thrown on at a moments notice your Drill Sergeant will likely give you but a few minutes to change into a new uniform. Oh, by the way, dont leave the barracks a mess tidy up as you go.

Back in formation, you will march as a platoon to the mess hall for breakfast. You will be under tight time constraints to get your entire company into the mess hall and fed, then back out again. It may result in only about 7-8 minutes per platoon to eat. Its all about time management even while you are eating.

Back to the CQ you march after you are done eating. Your Drill Sergeant will now brief you on the rest of the days activities.

The Top 3 Reasons You Could Fail Basic Training

Yes, it is possible to fail basic training. You could go through the trouble of leaving your home, job, family and friends and come back a failure. In fact, this happens to about 15% of recruits who join the military every year. Too many recruits I speak to think that it is impossible to fail basic training.

From someone who has spoken to thousands of recruits over the years, let me tell you the top three reasons you could return home without graduating basic training.

    1) You’re an egotistical maniac.

I get an email like this almost every week. Here is an email I recently received:

“SGT Volkin, I work out every day and I get straight A’s in school. My fear about basic training isn’t about my capabilities to fail my fear is that I will get booted for being too tough. If the drill sergeants try bossing me around, I fear my subconscious fighting skills in karate will take over, and I will strike and injure a drill sergeant. How can I control the fighting force that has been instilled in me? Since I have straight A’s and am already a fighting force, can I get a waiver from my recruiter so I don’t have to attend basic training?”

No, this is not a joke. This is an actual email that I had to read and respond to. My response is below :

    2) You’re not joining for the right reasons.

    3) You refuse to be helped.

Who Goes To A Kids Boot Camp

The Corps delays opening of new hard labor camp in Okinawa

You might be wondering if your child would qualify for an intervention like teen boot camp, military school, or other similar programs. Maybe you are seeing some behaviors and are on the fence about if things have gotten bad enough. Typically boot camps have low selection criteria and are parent-driven. This means that most participants are there against their will.

Army Basic Training Phase : Red Phase

Shakedown: When you get off the bus from Reception Battalion, you’ll be told to line up your bag in a certain way to see whether you can follow instructions. Then you’ll be ordered to empty your bag. If any contraband falls out, it will be your first opportunity to see a drill sergeant go ballistic.

Training: The goal of your Phase 1 training is to begin your transformation from a confused volunteer to a confident soldier. During Red Phase , you’ll learn the fundamentals of soldiering, including Army heritage and the seven core Army values. Most of your classroom training will occur during this time. You’ll also undergo the Army Physical Fitness Test to assess your physical abilities. You’ll have several of these tests along the way to be sure you’re getting in the best possible shape.

During these first three weeks, you’ll get a thorough introduction to the following:

    • The Army‘s core values, traditions and ethics
    • Assembling, disassembling and caring for your M16
    • The Nuclear-Biological-Chemical chamber
    • Security and crowd dispersion discipline
    • Combatives: hand-to-hand combat and guerrilla exercises
    • Barracks inspections
    • Running, tactical daylight marches and fitness training

Obviously, this is an intense training schedule, geared toward reinforcing the principles of discipline and teamwork. From here, you’ll look forward to moving toward the rifle range to learn some exciting — and very useful — skills.
