Are There Consequences For The All

Salvation Army says volunteer numbers are down 50%

In the summer of 1970 in the immediate aftermath of a disastrous spring of rioting by university students, President Richard Nixon decided that a draft lottery would determine the following years call up. To the astonishment of university administrators who believed that the students were deeply motivated by moral concerns, the troubles disappeared in the fall. As one cynic summed up the results: The one third with the highest numbers knew that they were safe and immediately hit the books to study for the law boards the one third with the lowest number and most likely to be taken figured out how to join ROTC or some other method of escaping the draft and only the middle third felt the deep angst that had marked university communities over the previous five years. Two years later as the Vietnam War disappeared into the silence of PBS documentaries, Nixon announced the all-volunteer military.

There were many military leaders at the time who worried that the all-volunteer military would not work. They were wrong. Over the decade of the 1970s a dedicated group of officers and NCOs made it work, in some cases having to carry loaded sidearms into the barracks. But the results on the surface appear to have been extraordinary. In spite of fundamentally flawed strategies in Iraq and Afghanistan, to a considerable extent driven by Americas political leaders, the American military remain the worlds strongest by any measure of effectiveness.

Chemical And Biological Weapons

In 1992 India signed the Chemical Weapons Convention , stating that it did not have chemical weapons or the capacity or capability to manufacture them. By so doing, India became one of the original signators of the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1993, and ratified it on 2 September 1996. In June 1997, India declared its stock of chemical weapons had been destroyed. By the end of 2006, India had destroyed more than 75 percent of its chemical weapons/material stockpile and was granted an extension to destroying the remaining stocks by April 2009. It was expected to achieve 100 percent destruction within that time frame. India informed the United Nations in May 2009 that it had destroyed its stockpile of chemical weapons in compliance with the international Chemical Weapons Convention. With this India has become third country after South Korea and Albania to do so. This was cross-checked by United Nations’ inspectors.

India has also ratified the Biological Weapons Convention and pledges to abide by its obligations. There is no clear evidence, circumstantial or otherwise, that directly points toward an offensive biological weapons programme. India does possess the scientific capability and infrastructure to launch such an offensive programme, but has chosen not to do so.

The Need For Volunteers

  • Organizations need individuals to volunteer their time, especially those who are willing to help carry out and arrange day-to-day necessities for vets. Even if you feel like you have no qualified skills to be a part of this work, please reconsider. You have something to offer.
  • Many organizations who provide support services for veterans are simply spread too thin. Theres almost always something you can help with.
  • Volunteers with specialized training, from social workers to psychologists, can make themselves available to provide in-demand and impactful services that not every volunteer can offer.
  • This work can be a big undertaking and requires manpower to make it happen. Unfortunately, there often isnt enough funding to pay workers for their time and volunteers need to fill these gaps.
  • Support services are needed for injured and sick veterans, but theres also a demand for more socially based support for older vets. Volunteers are needed to help improve end-of-life care in a variety of roles, including spending leisure time with vets or providing bedside support.
  • Veterans need help transitioning back to civilian life, and volunteers have proven to be very helpful in this process.
  • There are many formal programs to help veterans handle overlooked day-to-day activities in civilian life. Volunteers can do many things, including helping vets with financial planning, enrolling in classes, finding engaging social activities, and more.

The Us Military Without The Draft

The first extended mission conducted by the post-Vietnam AVF was the Persian Gulf War of 199091. The success of U.S. forces in that conflict was widely interpreted as proof that a draft was unnecessary. Military leaders cited factors such as morale, motivation, and longer-term service as proof of the superiority of a military in which those serving have volunteered as opposed to having been conscripted. Other factors also made volunteer forces seem more desirable than a draft force. For example, draftees were required to serve only two years, whereas those who volunteer stay in uniform much longer on average. According to military officials, that enables the armed forces to focus on improving training and quality of life for service personnel. In addition, military service is frequently considered to be an asset in the job market once a soldier has returned to civilian life.

In response, advocates of the AVF point out that the draft does not necessarily make the military more representative or spread the burden of sacrifice. They point to the fact that most draft-eligible young men never served in Vietnam and that the percentage of women in the military is higher in an AVF. In addition, the percentage of college-educated African Americans is higher in the military than among those who do not serve. That raises the question of whether it is actually desirable, much less possible, for military personnel to reflect the demographics of the civilian population.

Overseas Bases And Relations

Farkhor Air Base is a military air base located near the town of Farkhor in Tajikistan, 130 kilometres southeast of the capital Dushanbe. It is operated by the Indian Air Force in collaboration with the Tajikistan Air Force. Farkhor is India’s first and only military base outside its territory. There was an unconfirmed report of India building some assets at Ayni Air Base in Tajikistan, although the Tajik government has denied this. However, India had deployed its Army and Border Roads Organisation personnel to upgrade Ayni airbase by extending its runway, constructing an air-traffic control tower and perimeter fencing around the base. India provided medium-lift choppers to Tajikistan and a dedicated hospital there as part of efforts to build on the strategic ties between the two countries against the backdrop of US-led troops pulling out from Afghanistan in 2014. India is also helping with the development of Chah Bahar Seaport in southeastern Iran, which is speculated to be done to secure India’s Maritime assets and also as a gateway to Afghanistan & Central Asia. However, India and Israel also have a very strong defence relationship.

The Desire To Make A Difference

Whether its your desire to work with a particular group in the veteran population or expand your worldview, opportunities to volunteer with vets help you explore your own interests while helping others.

Many volunteers see these opportunities to use their own passions to help support vets in times of need. For example, volunteers with animals have found ways to bring joy to vets in hospitals and care facilities by scheduling pet visitations orchestrated by social workers, psychologists, and hospital programs. Others have been able to take vets on fishing trips so they can enjoy the outdoors, learn a new skill, or share in a hobby with someone else who is passionate about it. Whatever your desire may be, there are usually mutually beneficial ways to put them to use by volunteering with veterans.
