Meeting Navy Seal Requirements

How to Become a Navy SEAL | Former Navy SEAL Answers

There are three ways to join the SEALs. If you’ve never been in the military, talk to a Navy recruiter and enlist. If you’re in another branch of the armed forces, you can talk to a recruiter about transferring to the Navy and then becoming a SEAL. If you’re in the Navy already, you can skip the recruiter and put in a transfer application.

The Navy SEAL age limit is 28 years old. Aspiring SEALS must meet other qualifications, such as be a U.S. citizen eligible for a security clearance, pass the Navy diver physical fitness check, pass a drug test and pass a background check.

There are no Navy SEAL recruiters. SEAL applicants talk to the same recruiter they’d contact about any Navy gig. Tell the recruiter you want to become a SEAL and ask for a Navy SEAL contract. The contract guarantees you a shot if you meet all the requirements, including the physical, the background check and the ASVAB military vocational test.

If you’re already in the Navy, you notify your superiors about your plans to become a SEAL, then ask your career counselor to start the paperwork.

Where On The Bud/s Compound Is The Bell

In BUD/S, there is a bell.

Its not just any old bell, either.

Its a bell that crushes dreams, echoes throughout the BUD/S compound, and endlessly haunts students.

When a student DORs, hes instructed to ring the bell 3 times and place his helmet in the line of quitters.

If youve ever been to BUD/S, you know what the bell is.

However, not everyone knows where the bell is.

One way to trip up a potential SEAL impostor is to ask him where on the BUD/S compound is the bell.

One technique Ive seen Shipley use is to ask the phony if he could guide him to the bell from the front entrance of the BUD/S compound.

Answer?

Its pretty simple. From the front doors of the Phil H. Bucklew center, you go through 2 sets of glass doors to the BUD/S grinder.

Immediately walking in to the grinder, you make a right and will see the bell right in front of the first phase office.

If you were to question a potentially fake Navy SEAL, you could simply pose it as a curiosity-like question.

Did you ever think about ringing the bell? Where is the bell at the BUD/S training center anyway?

Or something to that effect.

One other thing to note is that occasionally the instructors will bring the bell with the class throughout their training day.

I Was Dishonorably Discharged For Striking An Officer

Havent you guys ever seen the movie Under Siege?

Remember the part where Casey Ryback punches Commander Krill after he spits in his soup?

Heres a quick refresher:

If a guy is claiming to be a SEAL and mentions something like this, hes probably a fake.

As Shipley has pointed out in several of his videos, these guys conjure up stories from movies.

I refused to kill women and children, so they booted me out of the SEALS

Thats Hacksaw Ridge

I was sent behind enemy lines to terminate a rogue special forces soldier bent on vigilante justice

That was Apocalypse Now

Consider A College Degree

With a diploma or GED, you can enlist in the military as early as age 17 with parent or guardian permission. While a college degree is not required to be a Navy SEAL, you may choose to earn a degree before enlisting in the Navy. You can also consider enrolling in an ROTC college or the U.S. Naval Academy. Many Navy SEALs are college graduates who hold advanced degrees. Pursuing a college degree can help you enlist in the military at an officer ranking, which increases your annual base salary.

The United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land Teams, commonly known as Navy SEALs, are the U.S. Navy’s primary special operations force and a component of the Naval Special Warfare Command. Among the SEALs’ main functions are conducting small-unit special operation missions in maritime, jungle, urban, arctic, mountainous, and desert environments. SEALs are typically ordered to capture or to eliminate high level targets, or to gather intelligence behind enemy lines.

All active SEALs are male and members of the U.S. Navy. The CIA‘s highly secretive and elite Special Operations Group recruits operators from SEAL Teams, with joint operations going back to the MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War. This cooperation still exists today, as evidenced by military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Phase : Combat Diving

The diving phase of BUD/S training develops and qualifies SEAL candidates as competent basic combat swimmers. During this period, physical training continues and becomes even more intensive. This second phase concentrates on dive physics, underwater skills, and combat SCUBA. Candidates will learn two types of SCUBA: open circuit and closed circuit. Also, basic dive medicine and medical skills training is provided.

Emphasis is placed on long-distance underwater dives with the goal of training students to become basic combat divers, using swimming and diving techniques as a means of transportation from their launch point to their combat objective. This is what separates SEALs from all other US Special Operations Forces. By the end of Second Phase, candidates must complete timed 2-mile swim with fins in 80 minutes, the 4-mile run with boots in 31 minutes, a 3.5-mile and 5.5-mile swim.

Successful Second Phase Candidates demonstrate a high level of comfort in the water and the ability to perform in stressful and often uncomfortable environments. Candidates who are not completely comfortable in the water often struggle to succeed.

Stage : Third Phase Land Warfare Training

This period has the lowest drop-out rate as candidates have shown a strong commitment to making it this far in training.

Training sessions focus on:

  • Patrolling
  • Rappelling and other combat tactics

Youll also spend time in the classroom learning to gather and process information necessary to complete missions and become more confident in the field. The last 3.5 weeks of your training are spent on Catalina Island, actively practicing skills in an environment that aligns with real missions.

How to Train Like a Navy SEAL

Of course, for any nap to be effective, its important to do everything you can to get quality sleep throughout the night.

The National Sleep Foundation notes that sleep continuity, or staying asleep once your fall asleep, is extremely important to getting refreshing and reparative sleep and likely even more important than the actual number of hours of sleep you get.

For example, though Willink himself gets under 6 hours of sleep every night, he explains in the podcast that he doesnt wake up at all throughout the night.

Practicing good sleep hygiene like doing things such as avoiding electronics within the hour before you go to sleep, consistently following a bedtime routine, and going to sleep at the same time every night can contribute to getting better rest.

A Navy Seal’s Morning Routine To Stay Focused & Feel Great All Day

Every day, you wake up with a frontal cortex fully charged with willpower . How you apply that willpower over the course of the day can largely be affected by that first 30 minutes of your morning.

Heres one way someone might start her day: You wake up, and while still in bed, reach for your smartphone and start scrolling through email. Then do a quick social media scan, check the Instagram and Facebook posts, and then maybe you check out a news site or two. Finally you get out of bed, go make coffee, flip on the TV, and eat a high-sugar breakfast while you watch a morning talk show.

While you do all this, you also warily try to make decisions about what you need to get done during the day. This energy spent on weighing decisions directly drains your willpower reserves. Also, you scold yourself for not having exercised the day before, further exhausting your willpower reserves. You then shower, dress, and hit the morning traffic.

I have a better option for you. Below is an outline I developed while serving in Iraq, in 2004. Despite the environmental stress that comes with being in a combat zone, I was able to start my day energized, focused, and feeling great, with a full reservoir of willpower to spend on the decisions and actions I needed to survive and accomplish my mission as a Navy SEAL leader during wartime. Here are the six steps to developing and following this power ritual:

1. Find a calm space.

He Claims He Was Based In Seal Team 2 On The West Coast

This is another common one. Youll bump into a guy who claims he was a former SEAL at a bar, gathering of friends, etc.

Hell start dropping the SEAL bomb, and if you ask him what Team he was assigned to, he may say something like I was over at Team 2 in San Diego.

Immediate red flag

All of the odd numbered Teams are based in Coronado, CA.

All of the even numbered Teams are based in Little Creek, VA.

SEAL Team 6 is based in Dam Neck, VA.

Occasionally, you will get a fake that claims he was stationed on the USS Ronald Reagan or USS Enterprise.

Also B.S.

SEALs are not stationed on ships. They may take a ride on them to get to their area of operations, but they do not become a part of the ships company.

What Is The Name Of The Bud/s Training Compound In Coronado

This is somewhat related to the question above.

Most phony SEALs wont even have an idea of what the name of the SEAL Training center is even called.

The Naval Special Warfare Center, also known as the Phil H. Bucklew center after the father of US Naval Special Warfare.

If the guy claiming to be a SEAL doesnt know the name of the center, or even who Bucklew was, hes likely NOT a SEAL.

Quick Note:SEAL training also used to be conducted at Little Creek, VA for a period of time.

Birth Of Navy Seals And The Vietnam War

Navy SEALS Photos Showcase Rarely

President John F. Kennedy, aware of the situation in Southeast Asia, recognized the need for unconventional warfare and special operations as a measure against guerrilla warfare. In a speech to Congress on 25 May 1961, Kennedy spoke of his deep respect for the United States Army Special Forces. While his announcement of the government’s plan to put a man on the moon drew most of the attention, in the same speech he announced his intention to spend over $100 million to strengthen U.S. special operations forces and expand American capabilities in unconventional warfare. Some people erroneously credit President Kennedy with creating the Navy SEALs. His announcement was actually only a formal acknowledgement of a process that had been underway since the Korean War.

The Navy needed to determine its role within the special operations arena. In March 1961, AdmiralArleigh Burke, the Chief of Naval Operations, recommended the establishment of guerrilla and counter-guerrilla units. These units would be able to operate from sea, air or land. This was the beginning of the Navy SEALs. All SEALs came from the Navy’s Underwater Demolition Teams, who had already gained extensive experience in commando warfare in Korea however, the Underwater Demolition Teams were still necessary to the Navy’s amphibious force.
