How To Send A Letter To Someone In The Army

Write To A Soldier And Make Their Day

With these resources, you have everything you need to send a note of thanks and encouragement to military service members. It’s important to let them know they’re appreciated for everything they do. Something that’s a simple note to you could mean everything to them.

If you haven’t written a physical letter in a while, you may want to practice your handwriting before penning your note. It’s no fun to get a letter if you can’t read it.

Writing Letters To Strangers

Sending and receiving letters and cards is fun. Theres something special about holding the card instead of viewing an email or text. They make me smile. If I got a random letter from a stranger, I think Id be happy. It reminds me of pen pals from when I was little.

I love making people happy. So, when Christine Barba from Project Light to Life wrote about anonymously mailing letters of encouragement to strangers, I got really excited and added Send a letter to a stranger to my own list.

In the past Ive left small notes in books at a library and put sticky notes in random places in my office. For a short time, I even volunteered for a prison rehab program where volunteers exchange letters with inmates to give them a sense of normal communication .

With this list item, I want to mail a letter or card to a person I dont know and who isnt expecting it as part of a program or pen pal exchange.

I play with the idea of sending letters to a bunch of random addresses, but then I get concerned about what if the letters dont make it? or what if they think its weird and creepy?

For these letters, I write some encouraging sentences , and that I hope they will be able to see the many possibilities for happiness today. I also put some stickers and a cute drawing on one side, because the program encourages writers to decorate or personalize the letters.

Get Help Contacting Navy Marine And Air Force Service Members

Three service branches provide military personnel locator services:

  • U.S. Marine Corps – Scroll down to “Miscellaneous” and select “Personal Locator.”

  • U.S. Navy – Scroll down to “How do I find a friend or family member in the Navy?”

You may need to provide the military member’s Social Security number for the locator to help you. If they find the member, they’ll forward your request to them. Each locator has its requirements.

The U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard no longer provide military locator services.

What To Send In A Deployment Care Package

Receiving a care package from home can be a real morale booster for a deployed service member. Weve come a long way since the beginning of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in the early 2000s, and most service members deployed dont need anything. But everyone loves to get mail!

Choosing and packing the contents of the package will also help you feel closer to your loved one. Your service member will undoubtedly appreciate anything you send, but some things are particularly useful — and some items can’t be sent at all. Before putting together your service member’s care package, find out what they want, and check to see if there are restrictions on what you can send.

How To Address An Email To An Army Officer

Addressing an email to an Army officer requires the same etiquette you would extend to any professional contact. But keep in mind rank and professional designations when addressing the officer, and understand that the task will involve some additional time and security considerations not typical of other forms of professional email.

Bette: I always wrote as though they were my own child, or brother or sisterspoke about home , shared our favorite foods and I always asked about their friends and comrades.

Lisa: Wrote a bit about my life. Thanked him, let him know how proud I was of his service, told him to extend it to all. Asked if there was ANYTHING I could do for him and his family. Turns out we are both Pastry Chefs and have rescue animals. So now we have so much to write back and forth about! Letter writing is a lost art which makes it so special.

Pamela: Be positive, encouraging, definitely send hope. Let them know people will be here supporting them when they get home. Ask if there are any special wishes they would like granted while they are there.

Tracy: You dont always have to know what to write. Sometimes short and sweet is the way to go! Taking 5 minutes to thank them and letting them know you are praying or thinking of them

Cathy: Keep it positive! Tell a little about yourself and thank them. I have written lots of letters and write just like I would talk. The main thing is, keep it light hearted, upbeat, and non-political.

Elise: I start off by offering my thanks for their service. I then explain to them how long Ive been adopting/penpal and what it means to me. Then I write a short paragraph about myself. I then write a few generic questions for conversation starting. I close with an encouraging quotation. Thats my standard first letter.

Use Your Recruits Correct Mail Address

Imagine the heartache of sending lovingly written letters to your recruit over the course of several weeks, only to learn that he never received any of them! The number one reason recruits dont receive mail during bootcamp is because their letters were not properly addressed.

Within 10-14 days after your recruit leaves, you will receive a form letter with his or her mailing address. Though your recruit may move from one location to another during boot camp, you will always use the same mailing address. If you dont receive this form letter, contact the recruiter, who should be able to provide you with your recruits mailing address and platoon number.

Be sure to clearly write your recruits mailing address on any letters you send during boot camp or basic training. Avoid using markers or ink thats prone to bleeding or smudging.

What Do They Actually Need

If you find your service member needs essentials, choose small, travel-size containers of personal care products, and avoid aerosol cans. To keep liquids from spilling, cover the opening of the container with plastic wrap, then recap before shipping.

Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, cotton swabs, shaving lotion, disposable razors, shampoo, individually packaged tissues.

Personal care. Individually packaged baby wipes, eye drops, lip balm, lotion, aspirin or another pain reliever, feminine hygiene products for women.

Foot care. Moleskin, medicated foot powder and athletes foot ointment.

Disposable hand warmers. Send these during the winter if your service member is in a cold climate. Also, fingerless gloves, stocking caps and long underwear are good ideas.

Goggle-style sunglasses. Your service member will appreciate these if he or she is deployed in the desert.

Cotton socks and underwear. Make sure the garments are made of 100 percent cotton rather than a cotton blend.

What Food Or Drinks Can You Send

Powdered drink mix. Your service member will appreciate anything that can be mixed with water. In cold months, send hot beverage mixes such as cocoa, instant coffee, tea bags and creamer. During warmer months, sweetened drink mixes such as lemonade and iced tea will be welcome.

Meal enhancers. Anything that can be mixed with MREs , such as ramen noodles, seasoned salt, individual packets of hot sauce, mustard, relish and ketchup.

Quick protein. Energy bars, tuna fish, sardines, non-perishable beef jerky or beef summer sausage. Make sure the meat is labeled USDA Beef.

Snacks. Look for small, hard containers of chips, pretzels and nuts. These are easier to carry than large containers. Avoid bags, which may burst under high pressure. If you do send large bags or containers, include small zipper-lock bags so your service member can pack smaller amounts of snacks to carry. Snack cakes, cheese crackers and cookies are in high demand. Salty snacks are good for those deployed in the desert, especially in the summer months, because they will encourage your service member to drink more water.

Candy and gum. Avoid chocolate if your service member is in a warm climate. It will melt in the heat. Gum and other types of candy may soften and become gooey, so send these in plastic zipper-lock bags. Send plenty of extras for your service member to share, especially if he or she comes into contact with children.

What to Write to Military Troops Overseas

Dear Sam,

We miss you so much, and we are so proud of you. How is training going for you? What are you learning this week?

Yesterday the cat gave into his homicidal tendencies and brought in a live bird to play with and chase around the house. It was quite a fiasco. I heard a strange flapping, and I came around the corner to see the cat mid-air trying to catch the bird in the living room. I started screaming for your brother because I know he is the only one willing to trap and catch a bird. Your dad wakes up to me yelling for your brother, and he nearly has a stroke. Your sister just watched it all happen while laughing, as you might expect. In the end, it was a pretty bird, and your brother managed to catch and release it outside. I shut the cat in for the rest of the day, bless his heart.

Your brother and sister are all doing well, and dad is still puttering around in his workshop, keeping busy. As for me, I alternate between various levels of worry, but I am overwhelmingly proud of you. I remember when you started talking about joining the Army and all your plans for your future.

Remember, this is the first step towards achieving all you set out to do.

We all miss you so much! I will write again tomorrow, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Love, Mom

  • We are so proud of your service.
  • Stay patient and trust your journey.
  • If you feel like quitting, remember why you started.
  • If it does not challenge you, it wont change you.

This is the way you can communicate your support and thanks to the troops. It is not possible to write directly to or be a direct pen pal with a deployed soldier. You send them to SOT, we send them forward.

    Sample Boot Camp Letter Navy

    Dear Brother,

I hope you are well. Is boot camp hard, or do you find it easy to get through?

I finally realized you had not been around for a while, and I asked mom where you were. Image my surprise when she told me you shipped off to boot camp. I feel like I would have known if you were leaving, but now mom is on me about how much time I spend on my computer instead of pay attention. Something about situational awareness. She was upset with me until I saved a bird from your crazy cat.

Everyone is doing well here. Mom and dad are doing the usual, and I am ready for school to start again. I miss not having you around, though. Our sister is not as amused with me like you are.

Remember, there was a reason you set out to join the Navy. I admire what you are doing, and I am proud you are my big brother. Now that I know where you are, I will write to you all the time.

    Love, Brother
