Service records date from:
- 1750 for Foot Guards
- 1920 for the RAF
- 1926 for Royal Navy including Royal Marines
Each service record may include:
- surname, first name, service number, rank and regiment or corps
- place and date of birth
- date they joined and left the armed forces
- date of death, if they died in service
- good conduct medals
- details about their career, for example the units they served in
You can only get details about their career 25 years after the date they died unless you have consent from their immediate next of kin.
In some cases little or no information is available about someones military service. For example, Home Guard records may only include their personal details from when they enlisted.
Your request might be refused if it could harm the security or operations of the armed forces.
Having Trouble Locating Your Record
Iowa Veterans may check with the County Recorder in the county of their residence at the time of their discharge to see if they possibly recorded their discharge in that county.

Search For Claimed Commendation Medals
There are better ways to verify the authenticity of someone that claims they served in the U.S. Armed Forces, however, if you want a quick and easy way to conduct a free military background check it is worth a shot.
For those service members that claim they received commendation medals such as a Purple Heart or Silver Star, there are available databases online that can verify this information.

Step 1: Fill Out A FOIA Request Letter
There is no official government form that you need to fill out to make a FOIA request.
You can literally just write or type it out on a sheet of paper, however, it should contain some pertinent info.

How Is A Designee Assigned
A veteran or a duly appointed representative may file a “REQUEST FOR DISCLOSURE OF DISCHARGE PAPERS” designating an individual to have access and/or obtain copies of exempted military discharge papers. This form may be recorded with the County Auditors office or may be maintained by the veteran.

What To Look At
War diaries can help to build up a picture of daily service If all you have to begin with are scant details – perhaps just a name – one of the best places to start is the medal rolls. Virtually every serving soldier, sailor or airman qualified for a campaign medal and that entitlement is recorded within the rolls. One of the most popular series of records used by genealogists is the World War One Campaign Medals Index, which can be searched online at The National Archives website . As with all such searches, common names may present problems.
Once you have identified which medals the serviceman was entitled to, you should be able to identify the campaigns he was engaged in and the regiment or units he belonged to. Armed with this information you may want to read the regimental war diary, which can help to build a daily picture of war service. The content of these diaries varies, but they often mention the battles in which the men were engaged as well as the more mundane duties required of a unit in the field. However, it is uncommon to find individuals other than officers mentioned by name unless they did something extraordinary most are included in the sometimes frustrating term ‘other ranks’. Even so, it is possible to identify quite precisely where a unit was at any given time during the war and what happened to it. Original war diaries can be found at TNA, and a growing collection is available on the TNA website.

Apply For The Records Of Someone Who’s Deceased
You can apply for a copy of someone elses service records if any of the following are true:
- you were their immediate next of kin when they died, for example their spouse, parent or child
- you have a family or general research interest – youll only have access to limited information if they died less than 25 years ago, unless youve got consent from their immediate next of kin
You can apply for records if they were in the Royal Navy , British Army, Royal Air Force or Home Guard.

What Are Death Records
Death records are vital records, and they are official documents containing important information about deceased persons. A death record is considered the legal proof of the time and date a death event occurs. It is also the only tenable proof that someone has died. Generally, death records in the United States are public records and are accessible to eligible persons. Before the official recording of death records started in the United States, most religious institutions recorded them and were valuable sources of extracting family histories. Some regions in the United States began recording death events as early as 1632. However, this responsibility was later shouldered by the state and local vital record offices in 1900. By the mid-1930s, all states within the nation had started collecting mortality data. How Do I Request Copies Of Records
Federal law requires that all requests for records and information be submitted in writing. Each request must be signed and dated .
Certain basic information needed to locate military service records, includes: the veteran’s complete name as used in service service number Social Security Number branch of service dates of service date and place of birth. For records affected by the 1973 Fire, additional information, such as place of discharge last assigned unit and place of entry into service may be useful.
To access military service records, requesters may:
- Fax a letter or Standard Form 180 to: 314-801-9195
When sending a request via postal mail or fax, please use the Standard Form 180, Request Pertaining to Military Records. Although not mandatory, using the SF-180 is the recommended method to send a request for military service information. This form captures all the necessary information to locate a record. Provide as much information on the form as possible and send copies of any service documents that you may have.
Follow the instructions for preparing the SF-180. Check the Records Location Table and submit your request to the appropriate address.
Note: For the issuance and replacement of medals and awards, do not use the addresses on the SF-180. See Military Awards and Decorations for additional information on how and where to submit correspondence for issuance or replacement.
How To Expunge Death Records
Expungement of a record is the permanent removal of some or whole part of such a document from government records. It is a legal process commonly associated with criminal records. Generally, anything to do with a death record is going to be hard to expunge, and only if it is possible at all. There is currently no straight-through process for death record expungement in the United States.

Search The National Personnel Records Center
The National Personnel Records Center is located in St. Louis, Missouri. For those that are not able to attend NPRC in-person, the national archives are also available to request online.
The repository contains millions of military personnel, health, and medical records of discharged as well as deceased veterans of all services during the 20th century.
According to the website, records that were prior to WWI are located in Washington, D.C.
NPRC also hosts medical treatment records related to retirees from all services, and records for dependent and other persons treated at naval medical facilities. The site is provided to anyone that would like more information regarding military personnel, medical, or health records.
The information is made available upon written request to the National Personnel Records Center.

The rate of divorce among women in the military is double that of their male counterparts. The average divorce rate for those in the military is only slightly higher than the average U.S. divorce rate overall. However, the average rate for women in the military is higher than the average U.S. divorce rate.

How Do I Look Up Someones Military Record
To find someone elses records, you must use a Freedom of Information Act request. The FOIA website of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, www.rcfp.org/foi.html, has detailed information. When you file your FOIA request, ask for all publicly releasable information on the veteran in question.
